moody,

The first one doesn’t count. It’s really just a formality.

moody,

It’s very particular in its style and pacing. I liked it at first, but wasn’t able to stick to it. I’ll have to give it another go at some point.

moody,

Sounds like Satisfactory might be what you’re looking for.

moody,

It took me a while to figure out how important higher level pictos are for their stat boost. Your base stats become basically irrelevant at one point when you can give a character 500 defense with one picto.

moody,

The lack of ammo is solved with the chainsaw. That’s why they give you puny zombies in every battle. They’re easy to kill for a little health, and it only takes one charge of the chainsaw to fill up on ammo.

Doom rewards you for playing aggressively, much more so that the OG game did. They want you to get right up into the thick of it, not corner peek with your shotgun.

Definitely fair if that’s not your type of game though. It’s plays quite different from the original.

moody,

I watched a stream of it. It looked like a good time with friends in voice chat, but I wouldn’t want to play it with randos.

I also don’t think it would keep me hooked for very long. Probably a session once in a while. I can’t see myself playing dozens of hours of it.

moody,

(Which from my perspective is very silly — what’s the difference between them making a kajillion dollars in the fall and them making a kajillion dollars in May?)

This “article” was written by a moron who doesn’t seem to know anything about the stock market. I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising for Bloomberg.

moody,

I think those glitches work because some menu interactions slow the game down intentionally (for like half a second) and players have found ways of abusing the slowdown’s interaction with game physics. So I don’t think framerates are relevant to that, but I may be wrong about that.

Doom Eternal had similar glitches where the weapon choice menu slows time down to let you make a selection, and you can abuse that slowdown by spamming the jump button to launch yourself really high. I believe speed runners bind the mouse wheel to jump so they can super launch themselves.

moody,

SnapMap is a built-in map editor. It lets you build simple maps made of prefab rooms. It’s clunky and very limited. Really nothing particularly interesting considering the history of OG Doom’s decades-old fan-made map scene.

Day 270 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games l've been playing angielski

Today’s game is some more R.E.P.O. I was left wanting to play more after the last time playing, and managed to drag my group out to play another game, which honestly i wasn’t expecting. Usually my friend group is the one who has to initiate multiplayer...

moody,

This guy makes one of these posts a day. Is that what you call flooding?

moody,

I find they kick my ass because they’re often hard to see until they’re already shooting at me

Should we boycott games with loot boxes? angielski

I have been avoiding multiplayer Valve games like Counter-Strike 2 and Team Fortress 2, due to their in-game economies that have created an underage gambling gray market, which Valve has done little about. However, I am on Linux, and the choices for multiplayer shooters are few. Besides, my small boycott is not stopping...

moody,

More important than who you choose not to give your money to is who you do choose to give it to.

Your all-time favorite game? Let's discuss the best options! angielski

I feel like my “all-time favorite” changes depending on my mood, but if I had to pick just one, I’d probably go with The Witcher 3. That game just hit all the right notes—amazing story, incredible world-building, and so much stuff to do without feeling like pointless filler. Plus, the expansions were just as good, if not...

moody,

I’m still surprised how well received it was, not because I disagree, but just because of the numbers. It’s currently sitting at 95% positive ratings on Steam, and that’s with 229k reviews, for a game that plays so different from what gamers expected out of FromSoft.

moody,

Doesn’t the Xbox 360 have a sleep mode? Basically you’d only need to do it again if the power goes out.

moody,

It’s more cod-like right now, but it’s still more strategic and 3-dimensional. I think once people start getting to know the maps better and strategies start to develop more, the run-and-gun style of play will slow down and people will play more carefully and more objective-oriented.

moody,

It’s just a mod for HL2, so I imagine it can be modded the same way as HL2

moody,

It’s also entirely possible that you can’t host any of the games. If the host owns the game, anyone else can play for free through a browser. It could just be access to the jackbox.tv website from the TV itself.

moody,

I’d say it’s still worth playing, but the story is way more predictable, and they made some things more grindy to upgrade than they were in the first one. Also they added robots that are even more of a slog to fight through.

Those giant turtles are bullshit and just not fun.

moody,

Lol git gut, my opinion is the only one that matters

moody,

Network test where nobody can manage to queue with other people :/

A network test showing that the testing was required.

If you sign up for a network test, you have to be expecting issues like this.

What video game franchises do you not need to start from the very beginning to enjoy? What would you recommend as the entry point into your favorite series? angielski

I’ll start by saying I had a bit of trouble wording the title but I’ll try to elaborate on it. I find it can be a bit daunting at times figuring out what a decent entry point is in a series of video games without searching online first. Sometimes there will be ten games released across three different generation of consoles...

moody,

For Metroid, start with 2, then Super is a big step up in terms of feel and gameplay. The first one doesn’t explain anything at all, and compared to modern standards feels quite clunky and tedious (you have to find multiple secret passages to finish the game normally, for example.) It’s worth playing if you’re in the mood for NES-era retro gaming, but it can be frustrating trying to figure it out on your own.

For lore, Fusion is next, followed by Dread. I didn’t like Fusion, felt too hand-holdy for me, I would skip it but many seem to like it. Dread is worth playing on its own though. It’s a much faster pace, more action-oriented gameplay. Fusion added a horror element to the game, but for the most part it’s more for vibe than gameplay reasons. Dread took that scary vibe and moved it into the gameplay.

The Prime series I think is a separate canon story. They can definitely be played independently. They follow a storyline and are direct sequels to each other, but gameplay-wise they don’t require playing other games before. You don’t unlock any important knowledge relevant to one game from playing the previous one.

moody,

The goal is not to prevent you from agreeing to bad terms, it’s to prevent the companies from imposing those bad terms on people.

Would you rather buy a game that you know is going to die in a year, or the same game but that can be played for as long as you want?

Would you rather companies keep making games with a short expiration date, or games that people can keep playing if they so choose?

moody,

Currently, they don’t even give you that choice. They’re the ones making that decision. Sure, you can buy it, but you don’t get to decide if you want to play their game longer than they want you to.

moody,

It used to be enough. I played so much COD4 back in the day on Xbox and the only login I ever needed was my Xbox account.

But nowadays, they want more data from you than the platform is willing or allowed to share, so you need to log in to their service.

moody,

What does Bobby Kotick have to do with Ubisoft? He worked for Activision/Blizzard.

moody,

Actually AMD has said they’re ditching their high end options

Which means there’s no more competition in the high-end range. AMD was lagging behind Nvidia in terms of pure performance, but the price/performance ratio was better. Now they’ve given up a segment of the market, and consumers lose out in the process.

moody,

From personal experience, I’d say the end result for framegen is hit or miss. In some cases, you get a much smoother framerate without any noticeable downsides, and in others, your frame times are all over the place and it makes the game look choppy. For example, I couldn’t play CP2077 with franegen at all. I had more frames, but in reality it felt like I actually had fewer. With Ark Survival Ascended, I’m not seeing any downside and it basically doubled my framerate.

Upscaling, I’m generally sold on. If you try to upscale from 1080p to 4K, it’s usually pretty obvious, but you can render at 80% of the resolution and upscale the last 20% and get a pretty big framerate bump while getting better visuals than rendering at 100% with reduced settings.

That said, I would rather have better actual performance than just perceived performance.

moody,

But they’ve been selling mid-range and budget GPUs all this time. They’re not adding to the existing competition there, because they already have a share of that market. What they’re doing is pulling out of a segment where there was (a bit of) competition, leaving a monopoly behind. If they do that, we can only hope that Intel puts out high-end GPUs to compete in that market, otherwise it’s Nvidia or nothing.

Nvidia already had the biggest share of the high-end market, but now they’re the only player.

moody,

As a matter of principle, I don’t save my credit card number anywhere. It’s a little more tedious when I make a purchase, but I’ve got my number memorized anyway, so it’s not a big deal, and it’s definitely more secure in that respect.

moody,

Literally the company that RDR2 portrays as the bad guys, that sued the makers of the game and lost because they objectively ARE the bad guys.

moody,

I would imagine that admitting fault is a bad look when it comes to fighting the lawsuit that inevitably comes after. Hard to claim you’re not liable when you’ve made a statement saying it’s your fault.

moody,

If you’re looking for pretty, Fractal Design have great looking cases. Not cheap though.

moody,

BG3 was definitely a complete game upon release. This is just icing on the cake.

moody,

Not sure what the price is in Euros, but it’s also %41 off on Fanatical.

moody,

I don’t know get why they would make it with UE5 when they have their own in-house engine.

moody,

I don’t know how to do it, but I know it’s possible to get your motherboard’s HDMI port, if it has one, to display the output from the GPU. Might help you hold out if you’re not otherwise looking to upgrade.

moody,

Yeah, Elden Ring has multiple swamps, some of which are poisonous.

moody,

Most disputes most likely fall far below the limit for small claims, where a lawyer is not required, or even allowed in many cases.

moody,

That’s because the arbitrators are hired by the company. Unless it’s an egregious situation, who’s going to side against the people signing their paycheck?

moody,

You raised my hopes, and dashed them quite expertly sir! Bravo!

moody,

For most people, it’s a hobby for fun, not a job.

Those that want to make a job out of it tend to spread out the content creation to youtube and tiktok, and often sponsorships fill in the gaps.

The ones that actually make a decent living only from streaming are a fraction of one percent.

moody,

Depends what you mean by good. Is it silly pointless fun? Yes it is.

Is it deep, compelling gameplay with a lot of replayability? No.

It plays kind of like Untitled Goose Game in a way. Short themed sections with vague goals.

moody,

This only applies to trademarks and the risk of genericization. You don’t lose copyrights that way.

moody,

It’s certainly possible, but AFAIK their objections have been about piracy and copyright infringement. At least I haven’t read or heard anything about trade secrets being at issue.

moody,

Meh, I don’t think there’s anything morally wrong with what he did. What he did wasn’t just legal, it’s literally his job. The only issue is that Valve is now angry at him for their own failing.

To continue the same analogy, they didn’t just leave the gate open, they literally invited a bunch of people and told them to invite other people. I’m not sure what they expected if not this exact situation.

moody,

That 2% includes forgetting to use one, running out and being too horny to abstain, and various other excuses for why you’re not wearing one when you’ve agreed beforehand that you would.

I believe it’s over a period of one year.
