I'm glad Suda51 is still making new IPs, but I'm kinda over his gameplay? It needs to evolve somehow… like, melee here looks a lot like Killer Is Dead, which was serviceable, but not great.
Of course, everything else is captivating, as it always is, but I'll need more from the gameplay to get invested in this.
Tag fighters aren't my thing and ASW are headed in the opposite direction of what I want from a fighting game, but I'm happy for them! They came a long way and more or less stuck to their guns, which's admirable.
I'm happy to go down with Plus R, P4AU, and Under Night though.
I like how she argues casually that a good video game is a good thing for your focus as opposed to the toxic gunk too many people get trapped into, such as big social media and evil mobile gaming. I mean it’s nothing new, but sometimes hearing some positivity is a boon.
You joke, but half of my Steam library is incompatible with Steam Deck. Like, I fucking hate Windows, but I'm stuck there for gaming, and I don't even play these multiplayer games. I'm talking Catherine, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Under Night In-Birth II… etc. Niche games all of them.
Shows one platinum, one gold, and one silver on my end? Catherine is notorious for being difficult to run on Linux, even the comments on ProtonDB say so… IDK if I can consider that very little tinkering.
Plus, that doesn't include docked performance… I need stable 60FPS docked for fighting games.
Like, I see your point that it's almost there, but going full tilt into gaming on Linux RN still feels like a risky investment for both my time and money when my $400 Windows laptop runs everything OOTB.
I am dual booting Artix and Win 11, and solely gamed on Linux for 2 years before getting into a bunch of games that don't run there, which eventually pushed me to dual boot Win 11.
I'd rather not touch Windows at all though and just hate it any time I have to use it for any reason other than gaming. The flip side is I hated gaming on Linux when I had to use it to play incompatible games.
I'll most likely just wait until my favorite games run on there and move for good. Maybe go for a Steam Deck then too. But RN attempting to go back to gaming on Linux feels like a potential time/money sink for non optimal results, which doesn't make sense when I already have a working setup.
Yeah, this is not applicable to fighting games, not in the past, not now.
In the past: they didn't do live updates because the technology didn't allow it, but they re-released the same game 100 times (See how many versions of Street Fighter 2 exist as an example)
Now: we get one version + balance patches and DLCs, and decent publishers do repackages after every season to make sure the price of the base game + DLC doesn't exceed the initial price mark: typically $60.
Hmm… I don't see how that hurts, yes. Problem with fighting games is you cannot release new characters without balance patches otherwise you break the game for half your roster if not more. And people absolutely want new characters.
But locking games at specific points maybe is worth exploring, yes.
This is exactly what fighting games do though. A season is an expansion (new characters) and there typically is a balance patch after a new character drops, then they move on to a new season.
IDK what people who don't play fighting games think a season is, but judging by some comments in this thread, not every one seems to know.
That's the thing, there really was never a better time for fighting games 😂 I know it sounds preposterous, but back then if your main was in a re-release, you had to buy the whole game again to play, now you can just pay for a character DLC, or a season pass, and both are significantly cheaper.
Balance changes can be an issue, I agree, but in terms of how much the average player needs to spend on a game, things have improved.
Except they did not get review bombed and the article is blindly using the studio head as a source. Go look at the reviews, there actually is a ton of valuable feedback there.
The Plus R community have been begging ArcSys to release the source code for a long time—hopefully, this will push them to reconsider their stance on open source.
Given the swathes of posts about bad behavior from big companies, I figure we could counterbalance that with some positivity about stuff the smaller guys made that often costs us less too.
I just picked up the highly hyped Blue Prince. On the other hand reviews have also called it a very niche game. I like puzzle games to a certain extent and roguelikes, but these are subjective experiences....
Take it from someone who grew up almost exclusively playing PES and FIFA: this looks ass.
Also, PES always had this camera angle? It's fucking horrible. If you control the entire team, you absolutely want the sideline view, not that wonky 3rd person one.
Even if you control one player, it's just much easier to keep up with the constantly moving ball with a much wider angle. You don't want the ball coming from off screen like they show in the clip when the player scores a header—higher likelihood you're gonna fumble the timing, and if you move the camera to track the ball, you may miss the keeper coming out/a defender coming at you.
And what's up with those rules? 😂 They're comically generic.
Unless this game has a ton of cool ideas hiding up its sleeve and not showing it in the trailers for some odd reason, this looks so obnoxiously arrogant and I have no idea what the selling point is, if any.
And let me add: I stopped playing FIFA and PES because they both suck, so I'm literally the target market. But this doesn't remotely look promising. Like, they didn't even solve the animation issuss… players look so stiff and seeing how they receive the ball is jarring.
In RL there is an indicator on where the ball is and the ball cam works really well.
And the ball is bigger and slower/more floaty than an actual football—it's neither in this game.
I think the 3rd person perspective and RL-looking field make you think it's RL with people, but it's just PES with the camera set to 3rd person.
FIFA is arcade-y as shit, this is why PES fans hate it. It still looked like shit.
Like, I obviously haven't played the game, so IDK for sure if it's fun or not. You're doing the correct thing saving your judgment. All I'm saying is it hasn't shown anything new/revolutionary, and that rubs me off the wrong way.
I played the open beta. It arrogantly reintroduces gameplay problems PES and FIFA resolved long ago:
Directional inputs are relative to your constantly moving camera, not your player.
Camera locks onto the player, not the ball.
The off-camera ball tracker completely falls apart in scrambles/when the ball is close since you have to stop and play camera operator to know what the hell is happening before deciding what to do.
Completely ignores motion inputs in favor of situational inputs when performing skills, which severely limits the number of skills you can do. You can essentially do cooler shit in PES2017, never mind any FIFA Street.
No off-camera teammates tracker.
No indication which team is in possession off camera.
No power gauge for passes/shots.
And it does not add anything new in terms of gameplay other than removing fouls, offsides, and throw-ins/corners/goalkicks, which literally was a mode in FIFA98.
Rocket League can get away with some of that because you essentially play with s balloon, not a football; whereas Rematch feels like an awkward version of the 3rd-person camera in PES.
Yeah pacman and pong were seminal but so was elite on the BBC, and Populous which I think was on the spectrum. Also unreal tournament, silent hill, vice city, homeworld, doom 2016, beam ng, I enjoyed em all but I can’t decide. Ppl here have done much more gaming than me, I’m wondering what you all think is the best game...
Amen. I also have a ton of issues with contemporary game design—padding playtime with procedural generation, prioritizing graphics, world size, or narrative over gameplay… etc.
Nowadays, I feel as if every game tries to compete for "most game" while lacking cohesion and polished ideas.
And to top it off: non-optimized game size. I'm sorry—I don't care if your game is $2.99, I'm not downloading 80GBs just to try a game I may refund an hour later.
FR. I hate this app so much, and how necessary it has become for multiplayer gaming. I'm glad it'll get worse and hopefully give people a strong reason to move.
Odd take in this context. The last game in this trilogy was released almost 20 years ago—if they're not gonna remaster this, what are remasters for exactly?
Hmm… sure, but I feel like "reviews are subjective" gets used as an excuse to give low-effort reviews a pass too often.
Like, I understand if a Steam reviewer writes whatever because they're just a user, but I cannot justify using the same scale to judge a professional reviewer.
I understand a game may not be a reviewer's cup of tea, but if this stops them from engaging with the game's systems and attempting to provide insight through their review then I think it's fair to judge they haven't done their job well.
Like, if someone hires me to do a job, and I accept, I cannot go "Oh, I'm gonna do half of it because the rest isn't my cup of tea. Sorry." No, I'll do the job and maybe complain about it afterwards, which IMO, is exactly what reviewers should do—example: "I beat the boss, but the fight sucked because X, Y, and Z."
I think there should be standards, otherwise you get reviewers unfairly judging games they barely played like in the infamous God Hand review.
I played it in the “open beta” two years ago. Sad that it’s come to this, the game had a lot going for it but… having all characters locked on start then weirdly shutting the game down for an extended time then coming back with everything somehow worse… everyone saw this coming....
In case anyone forgot: this game was nominated for Best Fighting Game twice at the TGAs and still failed 😂 Both times ahead of far more deserving candidates—further evidence a good chunk of these awards is promotional crap.
I’ll start by saying I had a bit of trouble wording the title but I’ll try to elaborate on it. I find it can be a bit daunting at times figuring out what a decent entry point is in a series of video games without searching online first. Sometimes there will be ten games released across three different generation of consoles...
Any action/fighting/shmup franchise because the stories are typically nonexistent/shit anyway:
Bayonetta: I recommend the original as a starting point for an authentic action experience, but Bayonetta 2 is more beginner-friendly.
Devil May Cry: either 3, or 5 will work—3 if you're after a challenging experience, and 5 if you're looking for an insane combo simulator. 1 could work as an entry point, but it's too old and will not appeal to everyone.
Ninja Gaiden: I recommend the original Ninja Gaiden 2 on XBOX (not Sigma) if you're after nonstop action, and Ninja Gaiden Black if you're more of a souls-like fan.
Crimzon Clover: World EXplosion is the superior game.
Under Night In-Birth: I recommend Sys:Celes because it's the only one with functional netcode.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax because it's the only Persona Arena game, they just started at Persona 4, and the story has tie-ins for Persona 3 and 4.
Guilty Gear: start with XX Accent Core Plus R if you need the "the most Guilty Gear" because every character has the most moves they've ever had throughout the series. -STRIVE- for beginners, and Xrd if you find XX inaccessible. OG Guilty Gear is a broken artifact, maybe to be admired, but not taken seriously.
DoDonPachi: DaiOuJou: widely regarded as a shmup goat and the best DoDonPachi game. I recommend the Black Label release.
We know that certain games are big, like BG3 or Persona 5. But recently games like FF7 rebirth and Indiana Jones just kept going on and on past “Act 3”. Also Rise of the Golden Idol seemed a little short to me...
Maybe not the length of the main campaign, but good luck 100%ing Cartherine, holy shit. Nevermind Full Body. There's like 8 endings combined + insane challenges and 64-stage game within the game. +100 hours easy, if not more.
It's all relative. Mediocre is still better than garbage, but not necessarily interesting or innovative. It's just "fine" because the whole point of the gameplay in these games is to progress the narrative forward. Mastery is rarely, if ever, required and gameplay depth is of no interest to players or developers.
You ignore all of that and start comparing their catalog to Ubisoft pumping out generic trash for years (NGL that Prince of Persia game is sick though) and you get a much brighter picture that doesn't necessarily take all factors into account.
Personally, I play games for the hyper engagement they offer, which I expect from hobbies and cannot get from film or literature. Stories, on the other hand, I can find elsewhere, so I don't necessarily care for them that much in games.
You may wanna re-read my comment—I did not bring up cut scenes, or claim Naughty Dog games don't have enough gameplay sections.
My point was Naughty Dog's gameplay sections are uninspired, non innovative, and passable at best because they're more interested in telling a story than innovative gameplay.
Whether I like narrative-driven games or not is of no relevance.
