Sony doesn’t really do that, not in the way that we’ve seen Microsoft do it at least. And most PlayStation exclusives are on PC now or are planned for PC.
In the last few years we used to do windows updates quarterly on our production servers as required by PCI DSS. In the last year though, we’ve had to do updates every single month due to critical CVEs needing to be patched. It’s becoming ludicrous actually, yet they’re cutting security folk.
Something that’s being heavily overlooked in this thread is the difference between a CRPG and an RPG/ARPG. I’m not sure which one OP is referring to, but if you want an easy guide, Fallout 1-2 are CRPGs, Fallouts 3-4 are not. Skyrim, the Witcher, latter Assassin’s Creed games, Elden Ring, etc are not CRPGS. Games like Divinity Original Sin 1-2, Baldurs Gate 3, Pillars of Eternity, Pathfinder, etc are CRPGS
A CRPG is the video game sister-genre of the table top role playing game.
“Computer Role Playing Game” doesn’t mean “A Role Playing Game that’s on the Computer”, the word computer is used here specifically to distinguish it from tabletop, meaning it’s intrinsically tied to tabletop RPGs.
So if a game plays with very similar mechanics to a tabletop rpg (Turn based, tile or distance based movement, top down or isometric views, unique player-created characters, plus the other hallmarks of the greater RPG genre), then you can call it a CRPG. Games like XCom are closer to being CRPGs than the likes of Skyrim, though it wouldn’t itself qualify because it’s not an RPG.
Games like Skyrim are well established in the “Action RPG” genre which is intentionally distinct from the CRPG genre so the burden of supportive evidence and reasoning would really be on you to try and make the claim that Skyrim is a CRPG.
The distinction is very much universally accepted. The reason CRPG is used synonymously with RPG in that article title is because CRPGs were at the time of their inception what an RPG was. You can tell by reading the introductory description and the characteristics section that what is being described and named are tabletop-like CRPGs specifically.
You’ll notice that in the section that defines ARPGs that they’re referred to as a hybrid genre. They are related to CRPGs which is why they’re on the page, as they borrow elements from CRPGs but they are their own genre that by that hybridization are distinct from the traditional CRPG.
This is reinforced by the Wiki link I sent you which is a more cut and dried succinct list of game genres, where it lists ARPGs and CRPGs as two distinct genres.
I have rewatched MGSV trailers multiple times, and I find this combination of 5+ minutes videos with scenes and music building the right atmosphere to be amazing. The other thing is, that for some, they created fake expectations of what story was going to be about....
This fella shot the CEO of UnitedHealthcare (An American health insurance company) dead in the street in NYC yesterday in incredibly cold blooded and seemingly-personal fashion.
Used to spend most of my days playing live service games that required a huge amount of time, or big AAA titles that are critically acclaimed. For example, Fallout 4/76, Battlefield 2042, rainbow six, World of Warcraft, RuneScape, Skyrim, Destiny 2, OverWatch… Basically any really big game that you would find on the top 20 of...
If we’re being real, there’s a chance you’re just depressed. It’s also worth noting that you don’t actually have to play video games. Sometimes I just find myself without anything good to play. It’s ok to do something else for fun for awhile.
Are you sure? I’ve seen generally favorable responses to the game from critics and players alike. Literally the only criticisms I’ve seen levied against the game so far are that it’s woke.
Playing complex strategy games for many years, one of the things that irks me the most is that hard AI levels often just give the dumb AI cheats to simulate it being smarter. To me, it’s not very satisfying to go against cheating AI. Are any games today leveraging neural networks to supplant or augment hand-written decision...
Hard bots have actually been so much trouble, that literally the only way to make them hard at all is to make them cheat by allowing them to operate outside of the ruleset the player is bound by. It’s a humongous issue with every strategy game on the market.
I think the thing to note here is that ISPs roll those things out fully aware that hardly anyone who pays for that will actually USE that amount of data. They don’t want a killer app for it, they just want you to think you need that much data, and then never actually use it. In fact there are some places where regardless of your bandwidth, you have a monthly data allotment. This game represents a shift into super high bandwidth usage for the general non-technical population. If everyone and their mom starts actually using all the bandwidth they pay for, can the ISP deal with that? If you don’t have a monthly data limit, do they start to roll those out to you and your area?
I’ve played it within the last few weeks. Like I said, deep as a puddle. Lots of systems have been bolted onto the side, sure. But the gameplay loop remains largely unchanged since launch. None of the added features integrate into the experience in any kind of meaningful way, they’re all just distractions, little side excursions. Base building? Cool, what are they for? Oh gloried fast travel points. Their primary practical use is to help you build more bases. There’s no real rhyme or reason to engage with any of the new systems added. They’re just novelties you toy around with briefly because they’re new.
Wow, this is awful. Some people reported that these ads are also very petty and not necessarily related to the game, like apparently Elden Ring shows an ad for a licensed mousepad when you hover over the game now…...
Hey, look! It’s a Space Giraffe Tick Penguin Thing, stuck in a walkway! This guy kept walking onto my factory floor and getting trapped in weird places. I turned my back for one second and somehow he got his head stuck between my walkways! Dude… I had to remove the walkways so he could get back on all fours and move on....
What it really comes down to is that this type of “safe” game design where you rehash the same game over and over again for 20 years thing used to make a shitload of money, that’s why they all do it, and now it doesn’t. Or at least, they’re discovering that there’s a mathematical maximum amount of times you can rehash something without innovating. And not doing that is too huge a pivot for a huge lumbering company like Ubsioft to make on a reasonable timescale.
This is what’s supposed to happen though. When not enough people buy games to make them profitable, the games have to change, or Ubisoft goes under. Either is fine.
The shame of it is this kinda the way she goes for passion jobs like game dev. Similarly, EMS is a chronically underpaid career. Not for lack of difficulty or skills required, but because people want to do it. That desire to help others only translates into an ability to underpay people for the privilege. There’s a nobility to wanting to dedicate your life to helping people despite the lack of pay. A nobility that is happily exploited by private equity.
Computing hardware when the PS4 and PS4 pro came out was still in the before times when new hardware meant doing more for the same money. It’s been a minute since those times and that isn’t really something Sony has any control over.
Meanwhile you also have a weird phenomenon that didn’t exist during the PS4 generation where you have a huge spike in inflation between your base console and pro launch. When the PS5 launched at cost $500, but $500 then is more than $600 now. The PS5 pro is really only $100 more in 2024 money than the PS5 was at launch.
Maybe Sony is making the wrong move here but understanding the market and economy as it is today, I’m not sure what else they could have done besides not launch a pro console at all.
I don’t agree with that really. I think PS5 games are already designed with the PS5 Pro in mind. We already have difference performance profiles where you can have 60FPS OR 4k OR Ray tracing.
If all the Pro means is being able to play 60FPS at 4k with Raytracing, the $700 price point would be very attractive. You won’t get that with a $700 PC that’s for sure.
Well from that perspective literally any upgrade at all is entirely pointless and a waste of money. There’s no point upgrading from your Nintendo 64. None of the games made possible by any console since can truly make any games inherently more fun, it’s all just graphical and performance enhancements.
Increased computing power used to open up entirely new concepts in gaming. 3D environments, then larger and larger worlds, dynamic physics engines, more complex NPC Ai and more power to run larger numbers of enemies at a time.
Absolutely none of that makes a new console inherently more fun. Many of the games I have on my launch PS1 and N64 are to this day unsurpassed. Not only that but some of the most critically acclaimed, genre defining games of the last 10 years could be run on a calculator. On the other hand we have all this extra compute power yet video game AI is universally garbage. To this very day the hands down best combat AI in a game are Halo 1 and the original F.E.A.R.
Console upgrades today are about making things prettier, fit on bigger screens, and perform better. If you think the jump from PS4 to PS5 wasn’t worth the money, there’s no upgrade that will ever be worth it to you again.
That’s really the key. The PS4 and even Pro were fighting for their lives by the end of the generation. Anyone who claims the upgrade to a PS5 was “minute” is lying to themselves about their jet engine PS4
Yes besides all of the brand new hardware that improved load times dramatically and can reliably play games at 60fps without blowing out your eardrums due to fan noise, the best new controller to hit the market since the first rumble pak, and all the new games to play on it, it didn’t improve much… lol
You better settle in bucko because I have some bad news, it only gets more incremental from here.
You’ve got it backwards. I said from your perspective, any upgrade will be a waste of money. You then proceeded to argue how from your perspective, any upgrade will be a waste of money.
The new Duelsense features are used in just about every single game on PS5. I have yet to come across any AAA game even from a non-Sony publisher who doesn’t use them.
One part of the touch pad that’s used very often is the touch zones, effectively using the touchpad as two buttons. Outside of that though it’s very rare. I think Ghost of Tsushima used the swipe.
