squid, w CD Projekt Details Cyberpunk 2077's Revamped Police System Coming Alongside Phantom Liberty - IGN

I’m pissed that they’re not adding in an interactive rail system. The police suck, I’m surprised they even had them in the base game, shameful

Kaldo,
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

interactive rail system

The what now? What is that and how would it improve the game?

wolfshadowheart,
@wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

There's a mod that adds a metro system. The on-rail trains present throughout the city.

I'd shift my version of that complaint more toward "post-game doesn't let me be a passenger". Delamain quests, side quests, main quest complete? Congratulations, you are officially the only driver left in Night City. Sitting and watching in the passenger seat is no more!

Well, not with the Metro mod :D

bitsplease, w Starfield topped 230,000 concurrent players on Steam, and it’s not officially out yet

Concurrent players on launch is really only a metric of hype - from what I’ve seen so far in discussions, the game itself is shaping up to be a pretty big let down

wolfshadowheart,
@wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

Kinda seems like people hating just to hate. It's a Bethesda game in space, albiet with slightly more menu travel.

It's a fine game. I wouldn't say it's a let down unless you're expecting fully fledged landing and docking systems. I've actually been pleasantly surprised.

essellburns,

Hype inevitably produces that feeling of let down for some people.

technologicalcaveman, w Impressions: Starfield’s sheer scale is already giving me vertigo

So, I love Daggerfall. Daggerfall is one of my favorite games, I still haven't finished the main story mostly because I keep getting distracted doing side quests and personal goals. Daggerfall is also ridiculously big, I believe it's one of the largest games ever. It's also got some very bland towns outside of the major cities. I'm ok with that, because it kinda makes sense that this random town I wandered into is 6 houses and a tavern. That works for a medieval fantasy game, especially because Daggerfall is so damn charming with everything it does. Thing is, Daggerfall is pretty far removed from today's Bethesda. And if Bethesda promised what Daggerfall is, today. I wouldn't believe them. I see Star Field as a sci fi Daggerfall, but I just don't believe they'll nail it in the way necessary for that largely empty space to be charming like Daggerfall is. I say this mostly because of how bland I felt their recent games characteristics are. I'd be happy to be proven wrong tho, and maybe I'll try it out some time in the future.

I loved Red Faction Guerilla.

@BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one avatar

I just… man, this isn’t my first rodeo with Bethesda, or the 25-year-old game engine they’re still using.

If there’s more than one major town and five different things to do, I’ll be surprised.

Madison_rogue,
@Madison_rogue@kbin.social avatar

No doubt...

Are we going to get 25,000 planets with repeating assets and only one town? I'll have to take your word for it, I don't have a platform to play it.

ono,

Maybe the planets are more like asteroids, just as Skyrim’s cities are more like neighborhoods. ;)

osarusan,

25,000 planets, but only 10 faces and 5 voices shared among all the inhabitants of the universe.

BlinkerFluid,
@BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one avatar

“Is that Patrick Stewart?”

“Yes, and so is he, and him, and that guy, and that dude, and those guys, and that lady…”

luthis,

Yep same. I’ll wait till I read reviews from gamers I can trust if it’s worth playing.

I really hope it is.

Facebones,

I enjoyed them through Oblivion, then Skyrim gives us generic fantasy land with generic fantasy lads and watered down gameplay…

… Then nobody shut the fuck up about it for 12 years. 🙄

alternative_factor,
@alternative_factor@kbin.social avatar

As someone who started with Morrowind, I prefer Skyrim over Oblivion. The Oblivion setting is better but the scaling just made it SUCH a slog.
However, I hated Fallout 3 and didn't even bother with 4 so I agree bethesda games have become less interesting over time.

RaineV1,

It doesn't use the old engine.

Tarte,
@Tarte@kbin.social avatar

Unreal Engine is a 25-year-old game engine, too.

BlinkerFluid,
@BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one avatar

One’s a company’s pride and joy and the other is a crutch because they don’t want to spend the money to move forward. Good comparison of a bad example.

*Apparently they actually modified Creation for this game. Color me surprised.

Essentially supporting PS4 and Xbox One was the reason

TwilightVulpine, (edited )

Nah, if they actually got it into production as they started to make teasers for it, they'd likely get some version of it working for PS4 and Xbox One. The first teaser for it was released on 2013, but development only started on 2016. I'd scratch it to poor management more than anything. Sony managed to keep releasing pretty impressive games on the PS4.

It also comes to mind that the versions on PS5 and XSX weren't even the "next gen" versions proper, they were the ones for the previous consoles that just happened to run better on newer hardware. The proper next gen update only came months later.

ivanafterall, w Review: Starfield

That's encouraging.

MJBrune, w Cyberpunk 2077 Only Getting One Expansion Was a 'Technological Decision', CD Projekt Red Says - IGN

I’ve worked with Unreal Engine 4 since 2014. I was a part of games that got the engine early. I adopted Unreal 5 last year when it was reasonable to do so. It’s honestly one of, if not the most powerful game engine out there. It has its own set of issues of course. A lot of people use its features without regard to their proper usage or pitfalls of using them. It’s also not an engine that caters to small indie developers. Every engine has its flaws. That said I’ve constantly watched as large indies to AAA studios switch to unreal over my career. It’s probably the best engine out there for those studios. It’s good to see major studios dropping their clearly buggy engines and being able to put out better products.

That all said, boy that 5% to Epic is making them a lot of money. I’m really hoping in a few years that Godot Engine will really start to compete but even talking with one of the major engine contributors: “godot lacks people who know what they’re doing.” I also see this in a lot of engine issues and poor architecture choices. It’s disappointing to see someone so close to the project confirm. Unreal needs a strong competitor though, something ideally open sourced.

I don’t see any issue having individual post for each review (article).

This is big gaming news, so it makes sense to have more posts.

Kaldo, w Starfield preloading is live on Steam
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

I really hope it turns out well. Fallout/Skyrim with spaceships is basically my dream game and if this can live up to it even half way through, it's still going to be better than any other attempt at it in the last decade (looking at you SC, NMS, ED, X4).

I'm still gonna give it at least 6 months before getting it though, maybe by then we get some substantial patches or (UI) mods as well. I still have some other big games in the backlog so I'm in no rush, after all I've been waiting a while for sth like this ^^
