Molyneux is the Shyamalan of video games. He’s done a couple of brilliant things, some decent stuff, and a lot of batshit crazy cringe-fests.
New titles are like Christmas poppers. You look forward to them because you remember that first time they were fun, but then you crack one and remember they’re mostly a mix of disappointment and the faint waft of gunpowder.
I really like this comparison. Dude has publicly gone on record about how he regrets utilizing hype irresponsibly. I think acknowledgement is all we want, and plenty of people still like fable and black and white. I would root for him to have a bit of a comeback.
Starfield just doesn’t look or play like a game that came out in 2023. Fallout 4 was already behind the curve for it’s time, and Starfield is basically just Fallout 4 in Space 8 years later. Rpgs have evolved in both gameplay and narrative and Bethesda just isn’t keeping up. Don’t know if it’s a skill issue or it’s corporate suits playing it safe and setting unreasonable deadlines, probably a mix of both.
Starfield may be a success financially and find a fan base for now, but it’s going to be forgotten soon by most and definitely won’t be seeing rereleases a decade later.
I recently replayed the first Soldier of Fortune and Perfect Dark back to back and I gotta say they nailed the retro style in this game. I can’t wait to play it.
Are they still working on buffing the shit out of the same modern day protagonist as before or what? I only got about halfway through Odyssey (but looked up the ending) and skipped Valhalla.
At this point I agree. I loved the modern day stuff up until the end of 3. But then Black Flag just made it a boring slog with maybe one or two good ideas.
I can’t believe they didn’t create any mods for BF, could easily have been like Skyrim in terms of longevity. People would have added full on trading and fleet mods like the old school Syd Meyers games. What a waste of dev time to create so much potential and justet it die.
Ubisoft did finally make a stand alone version that’s in beta right now. Skull and Bones. They promised all the cool stuff we wanted and it’s totally separate from assassin’s Creed, but unfortunately they seemed to have botched it and there’s even fewer features than in Black Flag. Ubisoft just doesn’t seem to be able to make anything else except progressively worse AC games.
Oh I loved Black Flag but I wasn’t excited for it like the previous titles and the present day stuff was just kinda spinning it’s wheels while making meta jokes about Ubisoft.
Very fair! I go back to replay it with excitement and it always drops off my face when I remember how god awful the present day stuff is… can’t believe it took until Odyssey to give us an option to skip
This doesn’t look bad, but I feel like bringing back Goldeneye style shooters is a bad idea. Like, I get it’s nostalgia and all but there’s a reason why that game is stuck and forgotten on N64, it just didn’t age well at all. It might’ve been good for it’s time and platform of choice, but I’d say that in retrospect it’s easily one of the weakest shooters from the 90s, especially in comparison to games like Quake, Unreal and Half-Life.
Why must everything be compared? If I pull out my N64 and Goldeneye and have a round of single player or multiplayer with mates, fun is still to be had. No one is sitting there thinking, this is shit compared to Quake. These games have their place in the hearts of many because of its gameplay and I for one welcome a new game that honours this era for what it was.
Game is kind of ‘meh’ at the moment. I paid more for this game than any other in my life, yet I am disappointed in what it’s achieved.
The outpost mechanic is completely and utterly pointless, inventory management is a disgrace, questlines are forced and inflexible.
I will revisit in 6 months or so in the hope that modders finish making the game that Bethesda started. I have learnt my lesson to not buy a Bethesda game straight away though.
I forgot I was paying for game pass, so that’s why I’m playing it now. I’m having some fun, but the revisit when mods finish feels pretty true. I only have one loaded atm, but definitely considering some others.
The outpost mechanic is completely and utterly pointless
I’d say it’s worse than pointless. The only reason I can see to use it (outside of XP farming) is to make the grind for research/crafting easier, but it even fails at that since you can buy/loot any resources you need for less than it takes to set up the outposts. It can’t even make one of the other half-baked systems less of a pain to deal with.
