MentalEdge, w New Nintendo patent suggests Switch 2 may solve joycon drift
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Fucking finally. Still have to see if they actually go through with it.

kiranraine,

Seriously…idk why they are so…obtuse to fixing shiz sometimes. Granted we are talking about the same company that won’t embrace fan work the same as Sega so they’re kinda backwards imo. Esp since that stuff usually isn’t making money or is free promo for the real shiz Ala streaming and reviews. They’re not very smart imo on a lot of things and seem to punish fans for having fun with shiz too much…

MentalEdge,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Nintendo is absolutely one of those companies that has been breathing its own farts for too long.

A part of me is worried that they will patent this, and then just sit on the tech forever, and kill hall-effect joysticks for good.

kiranraine,

I mean I doubt it. Hall effects have been on the market for ages(notably the dreamcast as a few other comments reminded me). They can’t possibly stop hall effects and mods that allow them at this point XD

WarmSoda,

The title of this post and article literally say they patented it.

vonbaronhans,

You can patent a specific implementation of a technology, but not usually the principles behind that tech. Nintendo had patented this, too, but that likely has little to no effect on other hall effect joystick manufacturers.

Xariphon, w Last Epoch - Meet Diablo 4 and Path of Exile's biggest rival, an ARPG designed and built by Redditors

$35 Early Access with unfinished story but polished cash shop really shows you where the devs priorities are.

MonkCanatella,

Give it a try on the high seas. I did and I ended up buying it because it really is that good. I never interacted with a cash shop in my entire time playing

fushuan,

… On the story. Their priority is the story. The cash shop is quite recent and the time it takes to develop isn’t even in the same universe as story content. Story content requires developing new zones, new enemy types, voice acting… They spent tons of time developing multiplayer, that’s a huge undertaking by itself where they are improving constantly. They just reworked some quests and remade the tylesets of some campaign zones. Developing the cash shop can’t have been more than 5% of the time they spent developing last year.

Either you don’t know about development in general, you are blinded by rage with the drama they had with the release of the cash shop (which they reworked) or you are being malicious. I’m guessing 1 or 2.

yuri,

I’ve seen early access games that go their entire dev cycle without adding real-cash shops. this pervasive idea that microtransactions are just an acceptable thing in any new game has me absolutely incredulated.

it doesn’t matter how long it takes to develop, putting a cash shop in an unfinished game is a bad move optics wise.

fushuan,

it doesn’t matter how long it takes to develop, putting a cash shop in an unfinished game is a bad move optics wise.

Sure, but the game already has content enough to be a good single player experience for 35€ so w/e.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

It’s also lacking. I come back every few updates but the game isn’t very good. It’s no Torchlight 2 or Grim Dawn.

From what I’ve heard Last Epoch is a good game, but you’re not really doing it any favors by saying “made by redditors”.

manapropos,

That bit makes me think the game is chock full of millenial writing

conciselyverbose,

Holy shit that borderlands 3 "turn the generator on" quote nails why I struggle to push through for the really fun gunplay half the time. They really do just vomit words at you.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

That was amazing. Thank you for linking it.

MonkCanatella,

It’s so funny how people who have no idea about linguistics/communications have such strong know-it-all attitudes about how people communicate. Remember the phenomenon of vocal fry? All the youtube vids like “i discovered this thing that millennial wimmin do and once you notice you’ll HATE IT.” and they just describe vocal fry which is just an absolutely normal part of speech and done by men just as much as women.

Begun, the handheld wars have.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

I’m all for it. It’d be nice if they didn’t preinstall Windows, though.

bingbong,

Steam really needs to make steamOS public

refurbishedrefurbisher,

Basically everything outside of Steam itself is open source. The only problem is distributing a device with Steam preinstalled, as that requires distribution rights from Valve.

bingbong,

I think that’s part of the issue. It would be cool to have an easily available ISO, and partnerships with manufacturers, like they did back in the steam machine days. That might make it more likely that we see handhelds without windows preinstalled.

fosforus,

It is.

[Very sarcasm] It's nice that copyright just means a copyright holder gets to do literally anything they want as long as a relevant work is involved. Wouldn't want anyone to get away with any kind of local modification, tinkering, tweaking an old piece of software to work in a modern environment, some forms of modding... All obviously reprehensible violations of a wank gesture, eyeroll Copyright Holder's right to control distribution of their work!

IP law is so fucking vile, and yet proves it can continually get even worse :|

Edit to preempt, just in case: Also, no I don't need another bullshit lecture on how "IP law isn't a real thing, it refers to separate segments of law blah-blah-blah" but somehow can't be used as a term because some wankstain feels like being condescending.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Like… I don’t disagree with the sentiment here when it comes to most things that have to do with copyright and modifications; but if you’re using the modifications to get an unfair advantage in a multiplayer game, you’re a piece of shit and deserve punishment.

Afrazzle, w Final Fantasy 14: There are no plans to make it free-to-play

JokeDeity, w Star Citizen reaches $600 million raised but the game future is really worrying

Anyone who has donated to that in the last 5 years is an idiot.

Poopmeister,

Idiot here. Put in 40€. Skeptical before I put in the money. But I liked the vision and had some friends that liked the game. Played for maybe 40 hours. Had a lot of fun with it. And a bit less fun when it crashed right in a mission. That was 3 years ago. Haven’t touched it since. Maybe I’ll get into it again to check it out. But no hopes for it being completed

bomberesque1,

Of I understand you right that’s 1 € per hour. If you enjoyed those hours then that’s a pretty good return. Enjoy

merc,

The first (and last) time I put in money was in the crowdfunding days. In fact, I did it so early they weren’t even using Kickstarter for funding.

Even though the current alpha is very buggy, I also more than got my money’s worth over the many, many years. I really would like to see the game get finished. But, what’s already there is really impressive.

The game has missed every possible deadline, and there’s every chance it will never be finished. But, the one comforting fact is that it’s missing the deadlines because they’re being too ambitious. Like, they redid the game engine to use 64 bit precision instead of 32 bit because they want it to be possible to drop a wrench at some random spot on the surface of a planet, and have another player fly across the solar system, go to the right spot, and see a wrench sitting there.

I wouldn’t put any more money in today, but I’m still glad I helped fund the game, and because I’ve been able to keep from adding more money, I actually consider my money well spent.

freeman,

I bought it for a short time. They have a 30 day policy.

I returned it within the week. Its just way too buggy. I dont even care about the pay to play ships, whatever.

But the bugs with missions was awful. The NPC/AI fighting is nonexistant. The flight characteristics were better with n64’s star fox 64. Its just not even close to being there.

Im a sucker for space games. If i want a flight sim ill play elite. If i want a space legs discovery game, ill play starfield. If i want to get stoned and look at weird animals with small heads and cool colors, ill fire up no mans sky.

ryannathans,

You pledged to an early alpha and then complain when it’s alpha? Shock

freeman,

No I purchased a game has releases going back to 2018 in 2023 and has raised over 600 million in capital.

Then returned it when basic functionality was broken.

SendMePhotos,

The game has been ongoing since at least 2011 because that’s when I first heard about it and the Kickstarter was going.

ryannathans,

Squadron 42 has been the primary development focus, star citizen is just the playground made by a few devs with left over sq42 modules - until sq42 launches then star citizen will be the main development focus. Until then, star citizen is just a fundraising platform, I thought this was obvious

n3m37h,

If you want to have fun blasting ships in space try Everspace 2 (very close gameplay to freelancer)

fosforus,

I bought the cheapest version a few years ago. Turns out that the game was a tech demo, but a very glorious tech demo. Flying near the cities, to the atmosphere, in space, all were very beautifully done.

As a game, pretty much a failure though. As a money vacuum, pretty good.

I think it was a positive experience as a whole, though. Never experienced anything similar since or before.
