Got to do better than Star field and come close to BG3 , dark souls, elden ring. Chances are they hit the reset button after it became apparent they couldn’t coast on the mod community

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Doing better than starfield shouldn’t be hard for them. Getting on par with the quality of Divinity Original Sin, much less Baldur’s Gate 3, is likely beyond bethesda’s ability, tho.

pyre,

that’ll never happen. they don’t have good writers.

sheogorath,

Just hire Kirkbride back goddamnit. I installed Immortals of Aveum and saw that Kirkbride is the main writer and got pumped on the game but that damn thing keeps crashing on me. So I’m back to just playing Diablo or Minecraft for the time being.

come close to BG3 , dark souls, elden ring

All of these were lovingly crafted bespoke characters and story arcs, with god only knows how many hours of real human thought put into the story, the setting, and the dialogue.

Bethesda execs don’t want any of that shit. They want a big button that says “MAKE NEW GAME” that they can slap and then a new game that pops out of a slot on the other side of their computers.

The mod community is so vital to these modern games because its real humans having real human ideas that go into them. Business only gets to latch on after the fact, once a DOTA or CS:GO has already fully taken off and left orbit.

Statlerwaldorf, (edited ) do games w Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Official Gameplay Reveal

I loved DA:O. It was far from perfect, but at the time it was the closest we could get to a spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Icewind Dale - dark fantasy, tactical combat, and a decent story.

Then DA 2 came along and it felt like an entirely different series. I didn’t get it at the time because of how simplified and arcadey it looked. I picked it up on some deep sale and got bored of it pretty quickly.

DA:I seemed to be trending back in the right direction with a bit more tactical combat. I never finished it but it was decent enough on a sale. This looks like they doubled down on DA 2 here and…meh.

Doubtful I would have gotten it anyway since it’s EA but I would have loved to have been proven wrong.

I don’t know a single person- friends, family, extended friends, streamers- who have played this game.

RGB3x3,

I didn’t even know it was out. I thought it wasn’t coming until later in the year.

There no way this wasn’t a flop

Katana314,

From what little I know, it’s basically Far Cry 7 with branding. Some people enjoy that, I got tired of the primitive style weapons in FCPrimal.

    I’m referring to the base game which has been out since December.

    Carighan,
    @Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

    I did!

    It’s … actually damn good. I know, I know.

    Okay so caveat first: It is just Far Cry wearing a Pandora mask. That’s it. I’d say it’s even slightly less than that because they had to thin some mechanics to make space to fit the theme a bit more.

    But, that theme? It… it makes it work! Even the mechanics being watered down works, because making it fit the theme just ends up being more important. Yeah, you play this for playing on Pandora. But fuck does the game sell this well! Incredibly well. I found myself just stalking the jungle (or plains, or forest, of which the plains are the weakest but still incredibly beautiful) half the time, genuinely doing the grindathon entirely willingly, just because of the lush atmosphere the game presents and how it feels to be roaming in this alien nature.

    Plus, I played Horizon Forbidden West right after this, and while I give HFW that it has much higher fidelity overall and is really pretty, the actual jungle and forest in particular are leaps and bounds above it in Avatar. You can notice the artists focused their entire effort on that, and even at daytime it looks amazing. Nighttime and they did the bioluminsensce we know from the movies incredibly well.

    So erm… recommended? In a weird way? It’s really just Far Cry: Pandora, but it turns out that despite not expecting to, that’s kinda what I wanted? 😅

    (Caveat though: I don’t think it’s worth €70. However given how much I liked it, €50 or so seems perfectly adequate.)

    Blackmist, do games w DOOM: The Dark Ages | Official Trailer 1 (4K) | Coming 2025

    I really liked the first reboot, but felt Eternal overcomplicated it and made it like a memory game of working out which gun was best for each enemy, which isn’t really what I wanted from it. Too much finicky precision (like shooting the goddamn turrets off things), and not enough wanton carnage.

    It took the story way too seriously as well, and the most enjoyable thing from the first game’s story was somebody starting some exposition, followed by Doomguy smashing the radio.

    Just wasn’t feeling it as much as I was with the first. It was only the soundtrack that got me through it tbh, and with Mick Gordon very much not on speaking terms with id Software, I’ll keep my expectations lowered for this.

    This looks like a bad mobile game?

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

    I can’t even think of a mobile game in the ballpark of what this is doing, but its closest competitors are Dwarf Fortress and RimWorld, which aren’t exactly known for being lookers either.

    bionicjoey,

    Not sure why you mention DF and RW, it looks more like the Sims based on the trailer. It isn’t a colony builder is it?

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

    Not according to the voice over or description in the video. It’s also why they quote a Dwarf Fortress developer in the opening seconds, talking about how impressive the simulation is. Dwarf Fortress in that it’s simulating this entire city for you to mess with, but the different take being that you seem to only control one person in it.

    bionicjoey,

    I didn’t see any base-building in that trailer. The DF dev may have just been saying it’s an impressive simulation, not that it’s the same genre of game

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

    That was the comparison they’re establishing, not that it’s a colony management game, yes. But neither is this game indicating it’s anything like the Sims; Dwarf Fortress and RimWorld would have more in common with that.

    kakes,

    Honestly, agreed. I trust Kitfox enough that I highly doubt it’s shovelware, but the art direction does kind of point that direction.

    That said, it looks really interesting. Can’t wait to check it out once it releases!

    VelvetGentleman,

    It doesn’t look like a bad mobile game. It looks like an ad for a bad mobile game.

    RightHandOfIkaros, do games w Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Saints and Sinners Trailer

    I look forward to playing this, the only thing I wasn’t a fan of in the original.is that saving needed a consumable potion.

    Shardikprime,

    Bro you gotta be all over those schnapps

    RightHandOfIkaros,

    What’s weird is I liked when Resident Evil still needed Ink Ribbons to save your game. But something about it in Kingdom Come just doesn’t jive with me.

    SRo,

    Same but I don’t think it’s weird. RE are linear games and you always picked up ribbons at convenient moments. KC is a open world game and the schnapps drops are random and not very often or you had to ride to an alchemy bench and brew them with an ingredient that was hard to find. I didn’t want to deal with that so I modded the game to save when I wanted.

    Shardikprime,

    I used the optimum efficiency method and got 3 schnapps a pop per minute, farming the ingredients wasn’t that much complex as well. One is everywhere and the other has some special locations. It has its charm

    SRo,

    I honestly never found the elusive one in the wild. Only got a reliable location with the dlc and the garden. The system may have it’s charm but it was just too many steps for my liking.

    Shardikprime,

    Nah there is like 3 places and one spot literally behind where you learn alchemy first time where you can get the belladonna 1

    Dkiscoo,

    Yes! This just made me pause the game and never close it

    Honestly, GW2 is the kind of MMO I’d play on the deck if it was compatible with a controller. It has everything to make a great controller MMO… Except the controlller support.

    natecox,
    @natecox@programming.dev avatar

    I set up a pretty workable controller config that I played with for like two months, but even with many hours invested in fine tuning it I just felt like I was fighting the game’s UI and I gave up.

    What’s really frustrating is that the game is totally playable with a controller. ANet just needs to update the menus and it would be a fantastic experience.

    Dremor,
    @Dremor@lemmy.world avatar

    Same. I tried, but gave up pretty quick.

    tomkatt,
    @tomkatt@lemmy.world avatar

    steam://controllerconfig/413080/2866090215

    Try this config. I posted about it above. It’s worked well for me to the point I’m no longer even comfortable playing GW2 on a keyboard, I’m able to react much more quickly to everything with the gamepad setup. Most important thing is always use action camera for combat and general exploration unless you specifically need the mouse for something.

    natecox, (edited )
    @natecox@programming.dev avatar

    I had a setup that turned on the action camera when I put my thumb on the steam decks left stick, so I was always in normal mode unless I was actively looking around or moving.

    It was pretty natural and the best experience I came up with, but I still felt like it was a compromise I was frustrated to have to make.

    tomkatt,
    @tomkatt@lemmy.world avatar

    I’ve been playing it on a gamepad since 2012. I’ll see if I can get my Steam config link for you later.

    tomkatt,
    @tomkatt@lemmy.world avatar

    Here you go: steam://controllerconfig/413080/2866090215

    Paste that steam link in a browser while Steam is open and it will pull up the controller config.

    Control mappings have face buttons and R1/R2 as attacks, L1/L2 as button layer modifiers, Joystick mouse and more. F-keys are on the d-pad, and most mouse related functions are active while holding L1. Pressing L2+R2 heals. Back button is your "interact. L1 + R3 switches between “action” camera and regular mouse mode for aiming. Action camera is better for combat, and is the mode I use like 90% of the time. Dodge is on R3. L3 swaps weapons. There’s also key combos for all the mounts, special action abilities (N key, on L2+back)… basically, everything you could possibly want to do in-game, there’s a controller way to do it. You may need to remap some of the mount buttons, I forget if I did custom mappings for some of those, as I have a lot of mounts (everything except roller beetle and gryffon).

    Hope it works for you. I think it’s a great config, but my perspective may be skewed since I’m highly accustomed to it from muscle memory and using it for years (with Xpadder even, before steam controller mapping was a thing). I’ve used this config for every single class in the game and dialed it in so I can play literally any class without issues, including ones that have a number of aiming skills like engineer and elementalist. Actually, elementalist is a blast for this, dpad was perfect for switching elements compared to fumbling with F-keys.

    Aremel, do games w Meet the REAL Sniper (TF2 voice actor video)

    It’s so cool that the voice actors are willing to do goofy stuff like this for the fans.

    I can’t help but notice that scout’s voice actor is never to be seen though. I thought he was into doing custom voice lines for SFM shorts?

    AnExerciseInFalling,

    The scout’s voice actor (Nathan Vetterlein) used to be super active, but a few years ago he said he’d be going on an “indefinite break” while he focused on other goals he had in life (presumably to do more than just be the “TF2 scout guy”).

    His linked in currently says he’s working as a principle game designer at Wizards of the Coast

    youtu.be/L_k9yb0kGgU?t=149

    But I agree, with the other voice actors getting together and doing all these fun projects it would be awesome to see him again
