The studio behind this one (Prophecy Games) is independent from them now, but still contains some developers who also worked on Ascend. I know from hanging around the forums at the height of that game that there was at least 2 headstrong devs in the company that legitimately wanted to do the game justice (and one of the best updates to the game was headed up by them), but they ultimately were at the mercy of the execs. I’m hoping without the same constraints, they might deliver a kick ass game without the bullshit.
I really liked parts of Ascend, but the game never really came together for me. It felt like they were focused on the high speed esport angle, but I was looking for the base assault/defense plays.
I’m happy to see that Frost also moved to Second Wind and even happier that they already created new content.
The video really is prescient. I wonder if it’s just pure coincidence. Not too unlikely as this topic is an important one but still… Apart from Frost’s commentary the visual material seemed especially dull as if the editor really couldn’t be bothered but maybe it’s just my lack of appetite for this genre of games that is showing.
Yeah, I’ve seen a few people wondering why the visuals were a bit dull and wondering if was the remains of The Escapist finishing them up to push them out and being lazy about it.
But it does by all accounts look like this was edited before the implosion, as they had literally zero employees left of the video team, including everyone who did video editing. The videos were all finished and uploaded to YouTube, just awaiting someone click the “publish” button.
I know a lot of people are super down on this, it’s a fairly low effort collection and we are often spoilt by other companies.
But it’s the games as they were and its nice to have an accessible way of playing them so I’m excited at least. I really didn’t want to have to dig out a ps2/3 to play MGS2
Yeah it does look a little low-effort. My first thought was about the GTA trilogy debacle. But it can’t be that bad right?
Konami doesn’t deserve the money, but it’s hard to argue against accessibility, so I won’t. If someone wants to enjoy these iconic games I wouldn’t try to stop them.
Alienate a shitload of gamers in favour of whales and shovel cute trailers. RSI is a joke. People that keep telling others to install and try it are the same people that bought RAGE and thought it was a full game.
For me latency is becoming the next issue. Based on Dlss3, not to mention you’ll usually use it in conjunction with other latency damaging things like RTX, I don’t think I’ll ever use frame-gen. It’s just very noticeable and makes it kind of pointless outside cutscenes for me.
You make a very good point about cutscenes. I’d love if there there was a frame gen & upscaler that exclusively worked on pre-rendered cutscenes to fix the issues in older games of cutscenes looking way worse than gameplay. I know for popular titles, there are sometimes mods that replace the cutscenes videos with upscaled versions, not having to fuss around with that could be really neat. But for gameplay, I’d much rather play at even 50fps native with variable refresh, without artifacts or additional latency, than a faked 120fps that still runs at 60hz of latency with added artifacting.
On a different note I just watched a very similar video that was recommended to me by a pretty much unknown creator about the importance of indie developers and pretty much everything Alanah says here shows how important they really are. To imagine where we would be without tiny indies breaking the mold… it sends a shudder down my spine. ‘Indies > AAA’ has been my way to go for many years, now that I think about it.
I was initially interested in the original, but the studio’s transphobic, misogynist, and homophobic “jokes” both within their games and their communities pretty quickly dissuaded me.
[Edit] it sounds like this has a new team behind it, so possibly disregard the above

I was not aware of that. I’m not the biggest fan of the Build engine, so I was never anything more than barely aware that the game exists. I’ve skimmed over en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_Fury#Controversy a bit after your comment. I agree with you. Had I’ve been initially interested in the original, such “jokes” would have put me off as well.

The successor is done by a different studio (Slipgate Ironworks, who are also doing the RTS Tempest Rising). The original team (Voidpoint) works on the expansion for the first game. I hope Slipgate isn’t using Voidpoint’s “joke” template.
Yeah having worked in a call center for 3 years I always find it amusing when people think these issues are related to a certain industry when in reality it’s just the core essence of capitalism calling for infinite growth in a finite market
