I’m surprised it’s not higher (or shorter). The amount of total garbage on the play store when I open it up is…incredible.

CleoTheWizard,
@CleoTheWizard@lemmy.world avatar

The same can’t be said of the iOS App Store. Still has garbage on it, but I’d bet that games are far more successful on the iOS platform for a multitude of reasons.

xkforce, do gaming w Report: 83% of mobile games fail in the three years after launch

Its quite an acheivement to have a relatively low barrier to entry and whales everywhere and still fail

betabob,

It’s also a saturated market because of the low barrier of entry, without an advertising budget you are taking a gamble no matter how good the gameplay is.

someguy3,

What do you mean by whales everywhere?

xkforce,

A whale is someone that spends a tremendous amount of money on mobile games. These are the people most games pander to or otherwise design themselves around

Frozengyro,

Most people spend nothing or just a few bucks on mobile games. But the “whales” spend several thousand.

Black_Gulaman,
@Black_Gulaman@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

But not on all games. Only on games they’re addicted to.

It’s a finite resource that mobile games have to fight each other for.

AnonTwo,

Even a whale can decide to just spend more money on a game they like more. It's not an endless market for companies to delve into.

fred,

Low barrier to entry if you’re not counting visibility. Yeah you can publish to the stores, but nobody will see it unless you are ordained by the gods at Apple and Google, or you buy eyeballs (and have the capital to do so.)

Agreed

Bunch of moron execs go on an industry buying spree, is shocked when the infinite money dries up, kills the jobs they bought. Embracer are truely awful.

Do we see also cuts in the management who pretty much created this fucking situation? Why is always the normal people who have to go necessarily, but the management stays.

Well fuck capitalism then…

Embracer has done nothing but buy and buy so yes, they totally made it.

They do not have the quality titles to support their stream of acquisitions.

They do not have the quality titles to support their stream of acquisitions.

of course not, they thought they would be bought up by some saudis and that deal went sour. At least the people responsible for that stupid deal need to be fired.

They’ve already started up their new venture Second Wind on YT. I’m looking forward to their fresh content and already unsubbed from Escapist.

Was this increased revenue before or after the burned all of their good will?

Unity has for sure lost trust from some developers. But i doubt you will see that in such a short amount. Already started and almost finished project with unity will most likely still be finished. But there could be a amout of devs that doesn’t choose to take Unity for their next projects.

ArmoredThirteen,

I work for Unity. Morale is super low here and we’re experiencing brain drain from the people in positions to leave. Another layoff is going to hose things even worse and I don’t believe the product will get better in the near future. I’m learning Godot now.

Sorry to hear your situation. I’m sure you won’t be on the market for long, though, and best of luck finding a company that isn’t shit!

@ArmoredThirteen @tamlyn that's so sad, how idiocy in management can wreck so much so quickly.

Absolutely, these are the numbers for Q3. They fucked themselves near the END of Q3. I’ll be very interested to see their Q4 numbers.

VentraSqwal, do gaming w The Escapist staff resign following termination of editor-in-chief Nick Calandra

How long has Gamurs owned The Escapists? I thought it was getting suspicious lately how many different things they were trying to get money so quickly.

They were putting more sponsor segments in ZP videos at different points and Nick would respond in the comments when people complained, trying to find a good place to put them. Then they started letting Yahtzee curse more and offering the uncensored version on their subscription service. And these changes were quickly one right after the other. I should’ve known something like this was coming, but I’m still sad about it. I hate capitalism so much. Why does these corporations have to ruin all my favorite things?

ZP ran for a very long time. At this point I am not even mad that it ends.
someone go check what are some longest running web series and where does ZP stand on that list

SilentStorms,

I didn’t even realise it was still running until recently. He had to have been close to 20 years.

So a little over 16 years.

Telorand,

Homestar Runner is technically still going (though maybe one or two episodes a year, now) and started in August 2001, so that puts it at 22 years.

Croshaw will be able to go anywhere. I'm sure he can negotiate his team to sign with him. This was either very bad move from them or it's what they planned for some reason we don't know about.

comicallycluttered,

May have something to do with this.

To be honest, ever since that news hit, I’ve been expecting something like this to happen.

I’m actually surprised it took as long as it has.

Feels like a big kick in the nards considering they just released a new video series from Yahtzee like two weeks ago, and Frost recently began the video series Stuff of Legends. I’m willing to bet this was a major shock.
