thingsiplay, do gaming w Will the Nintendo Switch become the best-selling console ever?

Let’s see how many units are sold during holiday season. Also if the new Nintendo console gets out, then the old Switch will get (hopefully) a discount and it sells a lot more. Keep in mind the PS2 and DS sold even after their successor came out. Wikipedia lists the numbers: en.wikipedia.org/…/List_of_best-selling_game_cons…

PlayStation 2 Home Sony 2000 >155 million
Nintendo DS Handheld Nintendo 2004 154.02 million
Nintendo Switch # Hybrid Nintendo 2017 143.42 million

And just for fun, people call the Xbox One a failure, but look and compare to some legendary consoles:

Xbox One Home Microsoft 2013 ~58 million
Super Nintendo Home Nintendo 1990 49.1 million
Nintendo 64 Home Nintendo 1996 32.93 million
Nintendo GameCube Home Nintendo 2001 21.74 million

BumpingFuglies,

To be fair, the Xbone released after gaming had made its way into the mainstream. Those old Nintendo consoles are from an era when gaming was still considered by most to be a child’s pursuit, so they had much smaller audiences.

thingsiplay,

I know, but its still funny that the XBOne sold more than iconic N64 and Gamecube combined. I know this has to be seen in context, that’s why I said “just for furn”. Also this brings into perspective how insane the PS2 sold, where gaming was in less mainstream position than today. It was Sony with the PS1 and 2 who made gaming mainstream. The PS3 came out 6 years after the 2, while the Switch has a longer period of time without its successor (currently 7, we enter in 8th) and still could not catch up. It’s crazy how the PS2 sold.

The Henry Stickmin Collection is a set of games that were on Newgrounds that is a choose your own adventure game with a ton of references to other things. From Marvel VS Capcom 2's Ironman Infinite combo to Jojo.

It's made by the same developers as Among Us

Alan Wake, Control, and especially Alan Wake 2. AW2 even has a legally distinct Max Payne with both the likeness and the voice of the original.

teawrecks,

What do you mean legally distinct? You know that’s Sam Lake, writer and creative director at Remedy, and face model for Max Payne 1/2, both also developed by Remedy?

rtxn,

I know. Rockstar acquired the rights to Max Payne at some point before releasing Max Payne 3. Remedy couldn’t just include a character they didn’t own, but they couldn’t stop Sam Lake being Sam Lake either. Plus Casey being the knock-off of two out-of-universe characters is funny.

teawrecks,

Ah, I guess I didn’t know they didn’t have the rights anymore. Tbh I played through AW2 and didn’t connect that Casey was a reference to Max Payne lol.

rtxn,

It’s a bit more obvious if you’ve played through AW1 and Max Payne recently. AW1 contains a couple of excerpts from Wake’s book The Sudden Stop, starring detective Alex Casey. They are written in the exact same style as Max Payne, and narrated by James McCaffrey, Payne’s VA.

They are 20 years old at this point but the original Guild Wars was full of pop culture references.

I’m not surprised, he’s the director of strategy for the publisher offbrand games whose biggest game is live service after all.

If you listen to this it will make your day at least 10% better: Playstation Startup

rtc, do gaming w Why video game preservation is important?

Because I like to play a game I paid for, which will run on my hardware. Especially when I avoid all the modern live service is a necessity horseshit. If people are not confident in releasing new games which others would buy despite having old games, I will stop buying games.

Let them do better or eff off.

WhyFlip, do games w Why are most mobile games trash?

Because dweebs like you keep throwing money at garbage.

Jestzer, do games w Why are most mobile games trash?

Because they make a lot of money.

Limonene, do gaming w What game of the 2020s do you think that will top the "best games of the decade" lists in 2030?

Elder Scrolls 6 will no doubt be polarizing, with some calling it the game of the decade, and others saying that the TES formula just doesn’t work anymore. (The game might also just suck.)

Burghler,

Bethesda has little chance to succeed with anything but a routine fumble 😞

I think the problem won’t be the formula, it’ll be the progressive dumbing down and simplification that Beth is doing since like forever. It will sell well just because it’s TES, though. Also, if Emil “lol who cares about lore” Pagliarulo is leading the writing and he treats it like he did with FO4…

Disco Elysium

Vampire Survivors

I just wish I could get more into it. I’ve removed it and reinstalled it several times, but I just can’t get as interested as I wanted to be. I love RPGs and the fantasy genre, but turn-based? Not so much.

PrimeErective,

Honestly, same. I want to play it so bad, but never liked turn based stuff

brucethemoose,

I hate turn based combat too, but it was super enjoyable in coop. And it’s quite good for being turn based.

It’s also real-time outside of combat, FYI.

For solo, I’d probably get the mod that automates your companions, and reduce the difficulty to your taste to compensate.

Thanks for the suggestions! :) While I was looking I also stumbled across Monomyth. That seems like it could scratch my Stygian Abyss itch as well.
