Diablo 3: Season 29 - Working on stocking up on Torment 16 bounty caches for the Avarice conquest (completing a 50,000,000 gold streak). It's taking me longer than I anticipated, but then again, I keep getting distracted by the Visions of Enmity. I really need to start ignoring those portals.

Diablo 4: Season 2 - Snagged the Razorplate chest armor with around 15,000 Thorns and a level 925 bow, so I've been kicking ass and actually surviving Helltides. My current goal is reaching level 90.

No one lives under the lighthouse - This was the first time I played this game, and it was amazing. It's been sitting in my Steam library since this past spring, and I didn't really know a lot about it going in except that is was more or less atmospheric horror. It was not what I was expecting, and in a good way. It was way more horrifying and lightly Lovecraftian than I thought it would be, since I was expecting something more similar to Dear Esther or What Remains of Edith Finch where I just kind of walk around while learning the story, so I was pleasantly surprised when I actually had work to do lol. I thought I'd get sick of the pixel art graphics, but it held up pretty well, and I even got some nice screenshots out of it. The only parts that were relatively frustrating were two weird chase scenes, but luckily the game gave me the choice to skip them after dying so many times. I've read that there's multiple endings, but I was satisfied with the one that I got (whichever one it is), since it was pretty much like a light bulb going off in my head and made sense with the story as I understood it. Parts of it felt very Amnesia-like as well, which is always a plus for me. I don't plan on 100% it any time soon, because it's definitely one of those games I like to finish in one go, but I think I'll have fun whenever I do.

A bit of Slay the Spire again and a tiny bit if Spiro Remastered with my daughter.

Fredol, do games w Whats with the sudden indie output from South Korea?

Those are fake indie games. They re-create the indie aesthethic to appeal to ethical consumers.

Dave the diver is not indie because it’s published by Nexon.

Lies of P is made by a previously unsuccessful company, but it’s also not indie. They made a lot of games in the past like Battlefield Online

delitomatoes,

Interesting, I guess the market for games as service or big games is not so profitable now, it would be like if Disney funded a small movie.

EA FC 24 is so unrealistic.

Imagine Barcelona Feminí actually conceding more than like 2 goals in an average Liga F game IRL.

Ridiculous.

Wargus and Stargus is an open source engine recreation that is still active

Official Blizzard, idk if you’ve played just the original basegame or the Brood War expansion. There is Starcraft Remastered, which has updated graphics and usability improvements but doesn’t add much other than that over the original.

An open source Brood War engine seems to exist but development appears to have stalled.

For SC2 the coop missions and the custom games are imo the most fun to be had in that game.

In terms of RTS genre, BAR is an epic scale free and open source RTS that feels like a distant cousin, but doesn’t have the deep lore that Starcraft has yet.

I’d also recently caught word from a fellow Lemming about a new game in development called Stormgate, worked on by some ex-SC/WC devs under a new studio. Gameplay has a very similar look to the former two.

sparky678348,

BAR is a fun game and I love any attempts to revive this dying genre

That stormgate looks promising! BAR is mentioned and bookmarkd.

Loria is a game from 2018 that is very obviously inspired by Warcraft 2. I remember enjoying my playthrough.

Arkham,

Came here to mention Loria as well. I like to call it “Warcraft 2.5”

Tangentially is 2023 chock full of great games because the pandemic held up the development of so many studios?

I know, they all announced that, but as a software dev, I really don’t see why this should be the case. We largely just moved into home-office and continued working, often even at increased efficiency. I guess, building games might require somewhat more creative sessions, which are generally more productive in person, but I don’t see that making a huge difference.
My impression was rather that they had the usual delays, with maybe a few hickups at the start of the pandemic, and then they just declared the pandemic the whole reason for the delays.

As for 2023 being so full, the pandemic meant lots of people were at home, consuming digital goods. It caused a massive boom in the gaming industry. I imagine, lots of studios were able to secure (bigger) budgets during that time, which are now coming to fruition.

There’s no sudden new output.

Apples iOS privacy changes have killed a lot of the value in mobile markets, so many companies have been looking to diversify.

Body Harvest on N64 was great, and doesn’t get the usual praise. Used to just leave this playing on loop back in the day
