The Banner Saga 1-3 has you leading an army and offers many difficult narrative decisions that don’t necessarily affect the story outcome but absolutely can make or break your next battle or just generally make you feel bad. Battles are turn-bases tactical style.

I’ve played games that thanks to patching, do not resemble the game I played any-more. TF2 is a good example of that, I can’t go back and play the game I played, it doesn’t exist any-more.

I think they made a classic mode, but that’s just one stage, I want to play the game I played the most which was a few updates in, but before it got silly.

Control. Liked it despite being in 3rd person view up until the mezzanine fight an hour or two in, then realized that the enemies are just dumb high DPS bullet sponges, the PC is a low DPS squishy and fighting from a cover or any other tactical approach I'm used to doesn't work.

EDIT: There was also a spellcrafting mod for Skyrim where the endboss was immunebto all magic and would teleport away as soon as you got too close while summoning a bazillion powerful minions. At level 50...60 it was litwrally impossible to figjt the bastard. After many tries I just console killed the bugger and was done with it.

I’m about 8 hours into it, and I would say try it again, and once you get the launch ability rely on that as your primary weapon. I only really use the gun in a pinch or against enemies that can dodge launches.

Shurimal,

Maybe I'll give it a retry at some point in the future. If I can recall my forgotten Epic login credentials, that is. Too busy with the thargoid war for the next few years, though.

I also bounced off Control. Really wanted to like it. 3D metrovania in a SCP inspired setting ,how cool is that. The game is a technical marvel. How Remedy got that game to run on base PS4; I will never know. However the gunplay just feels off. I don’t like how the gun recharges instead of an ammo reload system. I feel like I’m too squishy. The weapon mods feel materially pointless. Don’t get me the wrong the setting so super unique. Most of my time playing was spent glossing over all the lore bits. “Threshold Kids” is horrifically fascinating. As if it came straight from creepy pasta. I wonder if I would enjoy Control way more if it was a limited series on Apple TV.

Minecraft, I tried summoning and defeating the Wither and was woefully unprepared. The entire world near the fight was filled with craters from the explosions. I was getting ready to throw the entire world away. Then I decided to just cheat and turn Creative Mode on for 1 second, the Wither disappeared and I was able to continue playing, now with PTSD.

It didn’t help that I was playing on Bedrock (switch), which apparently has a much more difficult fight than in the Java edition.

Botw master mode sword challenge. Made it to stage 6

Ashtear, do games w Games that force you to make hard choices

I find games that have genuine path branching to be most satisfying for me in the “choices matter” department. Some games that come to mind for this are Tactics Ogre Reborn (or the PSP version), The Witcher 2, Triangle Strategy, and Baldur’s Gate 3.

There are others that have interesting decisions (especially ending/late-game ones) like Deus Ex, The Witcher 3, and Life is Strange, but I’m not sure if those quite have the scope you’re looking for.

@azezeB Some suggestions

  1. Dead By Daylight. 5 people with one being the Killer so you can rotate that if desired.
  2. Halo Infinite multiplayer can do 12 person parties for the “Big” map modes.
  3. I believe Lego Fortnite also lets you have up to 8. It’s more Minecraft and not a Battle Royale at all.
  4. Lethal company modded can support more than 4. That could be lots of fun.
  5. Retro FPS like Quake from various years. Just as a small distraction

If you like survival games… Ark, 7 days to die, Conan Exiles, Valheim*… You can self-host all of them so you don’t need to deal with griefers.

Valheim’s doesn’t work so well if you don’t all play together. Resources from exploration are finite and it really sucks if all the places you go, your buddies went to and looted already. Works best if most people play together and everyone plays around the same amount of time.

Holy fuck is there a lot of content in Cyberpunk 2077. I remember when the game came out people complained of it being as wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle but those people can fuck right outta here. It’s chock full of interesting stories to learn about and tons of fun gameplay. Same goes for Phantom Liberty which takes countless hours to get through.

I get that cost does not directly correlate to play time when it comes to video games, but it’s hard for me not to gawk at how this game was sold for the same price point of the yearly reskin of <insert corporate slop here>.

No, the irony of how CyberPUNK was almost ruined by corporate interference is not lost on me, but it’s clear that the developers, artists, writers, programmers, and designers behind this game are true masters of the craft.

This year, I’m most looking forward to playing through it again after I’ve taken a good couple months off.

I enjoy Cyberpunk quite a lot too, but if you're going to criticize the depth of the game, it's not necessarily because the writing is subpar or anything. It would just be a reflection of how differently the game can play out with different builds. It's a little better now with the 2.0 update, but the designers still very explicitly allowed for a hacking option here, a strength option there, and so on. Compare that against something like Baldur's Gate 3 where you're free to break all sorts of rules by just casting flight or invisibility on your party and solving a problem in a way that you came up with that the designers didn't go out of their way to plan for. The latter is real depth. A deep RPG should probably feel like your experience was pretty different from others' experience.

BmeBenji,

That’s fair. I guess I read the criticism like they were saying the game lacked the depth of the Witcher 3 which I would say is far from true. They’re roughly the same imo

Plume, do gaming w Get Humble Choice and other package titles for cheaper

Scamming a charity? :|

mateomaui, (edited )

For Humble Choice, the charity gets 5%, and there’s no way to adjust that as far as I know, so you’re worried about a whole $0.60 per membership, assuming you paid full price for the month at $11.99. If you managed to get it at $8, it’s $0.40.

If you’re going to be upset about something, save it for non Choice bundles, where you can actually adjust how much the charity gets.

And even then, if I have most everything in the bundle, I’m still not paying $25 or whatever for it.

What’s crazy to me in light of this post’s exchanges is that often these cheap keys show up a day or more after Choice or a bundle goes live, and there may be only one or two keys per merchant, so it’s entirely possible people are buying the bundles, and just reselling the keys separately to make a buck after the publishers and charities already got their cut. Maybe, or not.

v4ld1z, do gaming w Disco Elysium - Switch or Xbox/PS5

Definitely watch some comparison videos of the performance and make a decision based on that. If you’re likely to play the game on the go, then go for the Switch version. I myself realised, however, that I wouldn’t be playing the game on the go at all since my SO was interested too, so I got the game for PS5 for the better performance.

I think the performance isn’t stellar on Switch, but you can make it work since nothing too crazy is going on in the game that would require perfect framerate and resolution - most of the game is reading anyway.

Enjoy your time, whichever version you choose!

Days Gone, since it just released on gog and I wanted to give a triple a title another shot. It turned out to be pretty good, fun driving and gameplay, and the hordes were terrifying.

Also I was amazed how well this game was running, 4k 144hz butter smooth on a 4070. Kudos to the developers!

My most played game this year is definitely my favorite, loved it from start to end.

The Witcher 3

okmko,

This but with Cyberpunk for me.

I’ve tried W3 so many times but I just can’t get into it.

thorbot,

Try again and stick with it. I had to do it three or four times and now I’m hooked. Just about to finally beat the game which is rare for me. And it took a year, but it’s one I always want to come back to
