@savvywolf@pawb.social avatar

When going from point a to point b takes ages or is otherwise a pain. I get you worked hard on your world, but it losses its charm the 10th time running across it.

And don’t force me to hold/tap a button to sprint. Or worse, make me click in the left stick.

Sabata11792,

It’s not the time or distance, its the barren wasteland of no content in between A and B. I’ll hold W down for 30 minutes no problem as long as it’s interesting.

Good job UK ! Now cancel Brexit and vote for the EU one !

copd,

not quite sure how you expect to cancel anything which already happened

echodot,

The hostility from the EU about the UK rejoining (especially from France) tells me that’s not likely to happen.

SkunkWorkz,

Good. States shouldn’t be able to just go out on a whim and immediately go back in again like it’s a revolving door. The consequences should be severe for leaving. Otherwise voters in other member states will pull this shit as well, because they think they can just rejoin when the next pro EU government comes around. Also many voters in the UK voted for leave as a protest vote not because they actually wanted to leave. They didn’t understand the ramifications of their vote. Let the UK be the example of what a protest vote can cause.

echodot,

Surely the opposite should be true. It just shows that countries cannot leave the EU because it is far too damaging to their economy

In 2007 I threw away about 50 boxes (all in great condition stored by my dad) of SNES/GBC/N64/GBA games and sold the cartridges for pennies.

Don’t be me.

Bruh, I had Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Silver, Gold, Crystal, Stadium 1/2, Zelda Oot/MM, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64 etc. in perfect condition. I swear my dad kept them all safe, even the manuals, inlays and everything were intact. When I was like 16 years old I wanted to get rid of all my childhood toys and get into adult stuff.

It was like around 2010 when retro gaming really took off. I swore to never collect video games again.

DickFiasco, do games w What are your favourite single-player games without much fluff, grinding or difficulty spikes?

Slightly old by now, but Portal and Portal 2 remain two of the best games I’ve ever played. Gameplay is intuitive and linear, and doesn’t require grinding or building up resources. I thought the difficulty increased appropriately as well.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Fun fact: Portal was originally a university student project called Narbacular Drop that got hired by Steam. In a sense from its limited narration and story, it felt a bit more like a proof-of-concept than almost a full-fleshed game to me at times, which, for me, was hands-down Portal 2.

They’re great fun to stream and watch, too.

ceenote,

If they’re removing it soon, I think it’s safe to say not many people use it.

Chronographs, do gaming w Fuckin nuisance

Steam big picture mode enjoyer here, I generally just use it on my steam deck though. I get the vr misclick thing as I never use VR but I’ve never accidentally opened it

iAmTheTot,

Why would you need to use big picture mode on your steam deck when its entire gaming UI is designed for it?

Chronographs,

I mean the gaming UI is big picture mode, essentially, that’s what I’m referring to

iAmTheTot,

Ah, I did not think those two things were the same. Doesn’t the Steamdeck UI have different features than big picture mode?

Ulrich,
@Ulrich@feddit.org avatar

No, it’s exactly the same.

iAmTheTot,

Big picture mode can do the power control and gpu throttling and stuff? That’s dope. I gotta check that out when I get home.

Ulrich, (edited )
@Ulrich@feddit.org avatar

No, but that is also not a function of Big Picture Mode exclusively, that’s a function of Gamescope, Steam, and Linux as well.

iAmTheTot,

I run Linux at home lately. I guess I’m just confused now because they don’t sound the same anymore. But it’s not that important. Have a good day!

Ulrich,
@Ulrich@feddit.org avatar

If you run Linux and Gamescope then yes, you can do that, although it’s probably not super useful to throttle a desktop processor.

iAmTheTot,

Less power is less power! I undervolted my 9070XT to use significantly less power, but only lose around 2% performance. I guess I’ll have to look into Big Picture Mode, haven’t used it in years. I had been waiting for SteamOS for desktop to use those kinds of features seamlessly as on the steamdeck. Awesome!

Ulrich,
@Ulrich@feddit.org avatar

You won’t be able to undervolt your GPU from Big Picture Mode. You can’t do that on Steam Deck either, you can only lower the TDP of the APU.

iAmTheTot,

I didn’t say that I would do that from Big Picture Mode, I was saying I already do that. I have a steam deck and am familiar with its capabilities, thanks!

figjam, do games w A game you "didn't know it was bad 'til people told you so"?

Final Fantasy 8. I loved it but apparently I was in the minority.

Twinklebreeze,
@Twinklebreeze@lemmy.world avatar

I still love it.

Strobelt,

8 is a very solid game. The issue is that it was always compared to 7 and 9

caseofthematts,

Which is funny since I’ve played all three of those for the first time recently, and FF7 doesn’t hold up in comparison to 8 and 9. But I can see at the time how 8 could be seen poorly in comparison to 7 and 9.

ampersarnie,
@ampersarnie@lemmy.world avatar

FF8 has been going through a bit of a resurgence lately where it does seem to be getting a fair amount of praise. It used to get slated though.

duchess,

It still feels fresh.

DamienGramatacus,

I also loved FF8. I’d be more interested in a remake of that one than 7 tbh.

AquaTofana,

Another FF8 enjoyer here! My husband and I got married on Halloween, so for the reception, I was Rinoa and he was Squall!

10/10 fantastic game!

bus_factor, do games w First/notable 3D games where you could dive below water (and walk on land)

The first was probably Duke Nukem 3D, released January 29th, 1996:

…fandom.com/…/Water_mechanics_in_Duke_Nukem_3D

If you consider their hacky approach to 3D cheating (they didn’t support one part of a level to be above another, and implemented looking up/down by just distorting the image, so all corners were too pointy), then you’d have to wait a few months for Quake.

The first actually 3D first person game was Quake, released June 22nd, 1996, and it let you swim:

ArchmageAzor, do games w What game has the best tutorial, in your opinion?
@ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world avatar

For all the faults Nintendo embody, they know how to make tutorials, especially with the Mario series. You may think “there are no tutorials in Mario” but that’s part of it. Nintendo’s design formula for making stages for Mario games consist of “introduction, escalation, complication.” First they throw a new mechanic at you, maybe the stage has rotating cylinders you need to stay on top of to progress, and not fall down. Then they up the difficulty a bit, adding more factors to the gameplay like introducing enemies that you have to dodge simultaneously. Then finally they turn the new concept up to 11 towards the end, by making you have to juggle both the new mechanics and some other modifiers, perhaps having to fight a boss at the same time, or perhaps requiring some more advanced platforming maneuvers to progress. That way a stage can be a tutorial, and you don’t even realize it.

Taleya,

Hard agree, BOTW in particular was spectacular. The Great Plateau.

rothaine,

When you finish the tutorial bits and it’s like “you need to go over here” and the map just opens up and you realize this game is FUCKING HUGE 🤌

AceFuzzLord, do games w What game has the best tutorial, in your opinion?

Technically I don’t think there’s a tutorial level per say as much as there is a tutorial set of levels, but Baba Is You.

The game starts off with only the controls on how to move and teaches you about how you can change the rules of the level to beat it if it isn’t possible normally, without explaining anything. Just from you exploring and testing different things. The only other time you’ll ever see any other form of level hint is maybe in the level names or if you end up in a position where you have to undo or restart the level from breaking the " [ object ] is you " rule in some way.

emb,

Amazing game. I remember hearing folks describe it, before I ever played. I couldn’t get my head around the concept. Then you play, and all the rules just make sense.

dwindling7373, do games w What game has the best tutorial, in your opinion?

Outer Wilds has a very elegant diagetic tutorial in the form of a museum and, well, a training ground, whole game is really a multi layered tutorial with scaling level of complexity.

tahoe,

Came to say this as well :)
