MangoKangaroo, do gaming w If you could only play on one game console for the rest of your life which console would you choose?

Given we’re not counting the Steam Deck or virtual console titles, I’d probably go with the DS. I’m too big of a dirty Pokemon fan (among the million other great IPs on the older Nintendo handhelds), and the DS is particularly nice because it has backwards compatibility with the Gameboy Advance.

The Nintendo Switch is like cheating since it gets all the older games from different platforms…

Otherwise, the PS2 had the best games in it’s lifespan. Fight me.

The classic games section sure but I feel like it’s legitimate if they are remasters like the new Super Mario RPG for example.

As a heads up, don’t read the Gamespot review if you’re carefully avoiding spoilers. The review tries to discuss the ending without revealing too much but wasn’t entirely successful.

I personally enjoy Brok the Investigator, if you don’t mind beat-em-up mixed in with your story. Has multiple endings, every single area has 3 hidden collectables that act as hints in case you get stuck, and is available on console (ps4/5, xbox one and series s/x, switch) if you don’t feel like playing on PC.

You play the first chapter as a detective alligator (Brok) who has a new case to solve. Starting chapter 2, you gain access to switch between him and his cat son (Graff). Depending on your actions, you get the different endings. To make things easier on getting different endings, you can load yourself in at specific chapters, too.

I’m currently playing The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow. Very good so far.

Have you tried Resonance? It's a mystery adventure game set in modern times where you play as four different characters whose stories interconnect. It's been a while since I played it (a decade or so?) but I remember that it had an interesting game mechanic that let you use memories like items in various interactions, as well as a number of puzzles that I rather liked the design of.

Oh! Can’t believe I forgot, but you should also play Under a Killing Moon, and then when you’re done and completely in love with it, move on to The Pandora Directive, Tex Murphy: Overseer, and Tesla Effect. They’re a series of hilarious retro-sci-fi gumshoe detective comedy puzzle adventures. It’s like Maltese Falcon, Blade Runner, the X-Files, and Young Frankenstein got put in a blender. They’re amazing.

NORCO is the best old-school point and click adventure I played recently. Great pixel art. Great writing.

Legend Entertainment produced some great adventure games throughout the '90s. The wiki article has a list of them, and several are available from GOG.

kobold, do gaming w Let's discuss: Slay the Spire

i will never not simp for shiv silent. easily my favorite way to play. wonderful game.

i like to play what I call A20EZ cuz I’m not the best at the game: play A20 on custom, with sealed draft, vintage and the ending modifiers. it’s very fun to just start with a strong deck and get tons of relics!

it also feels like it teaches me what is actually strong in terms of raw card synergy, which has been very nice for learning how to get better at the game without suffering through being bad at the game as much.

AceFuzzLord, do gaming w Let's discuss: Slay the Spire

I suck at the game, so winning isn’t an option for me. But I really like either going poison or daggers for the skull wearing guy. I haven’t even bothered with ascension as I’m still trying to do the keys thing while beating a run with a single character.

I’d say the closest I’ve played to Slay the Spire’s “pick a path” style deck builder would be Peglin and One More Gate. Peglin is definitely a lot closer to Slay the Spire as you start off a blank slate every run (minus custom mode), whereas One More Gate is, so far, you do a run, come back to the hub area, buy/sell cards/upgrades, do another run to get slightly further.

Pretty much the only other deck builders I have are ones where you don’t get to choose where you go next and go from battle to battle without any path choices or chance based event areas (Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate and Ardor).

FIST_FILLET, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of February 18th

first skyrim run in like a decade, really makes it obvious how technically shitty the game is. so many immersion-ruining moments all the time, like people talking over each other. also the world map screen might be the most ugly and least useful of its kind. if i was on pc i’d install the mod that displays roads on the map.

but the atmosphere is nice :)
