I’ve been playing The Witcher 2 but I feel like I’m kind of forcing myself. I got distracted and started playing Returnal and resumed working on my big hole in Minecraft

Bobmighty, do games w What are y'all buying on the steam sale?

Ended up grabbing Jupiter hell and wizordum. Jupiter hell is a Doom adjacent top down turn based rogue like. Wizordum is a retro fps of the hexen variety. Both games evoke nostalgia in different ways for me.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Jupiter Hell was okay. I absolutely LOVED doomRL, and felt the jump to Jupiter Hell, not certain why it didn’t click. The controls are interesting. And would still support the dev.

IDK if this counts, but I loved SPACEPLAN.

Bleak Sword DX

I’m a victim to good looking games

ABCDE,

That does look nice, and under $4 in my region… Fine!

The only things I currently want are Helldivers 2 and Shadow of the Erdtree. Neither of which are likely to go on sale soon. 😞

Maybe Lies of P or Star Ocean The Second Story R, plus one or two “Survivors-like” (Halls of Torment, Death Must Die).

+1 for Lies of P. It’s the most Fromsoft-like game of that style not made by Fromsoft I’ve ever played. So if you’re a big Soulsebornering fan, it’s right up there with those.

I’ve only heard good things and watched a Streamer playing it last year, and I want to play it eventually myself.

While I generally like Souls-like games, I never got into most Fromsoft games, except Elden Ring, so we’ll see how it goes.

ABCDE,

It’s on Game Pass if that’s of any help

ABCDE,

Halls is great, I need to go back and check if they’ve added anything else.

Tenkard, do games w Is there some sort of Indie Game Showcase?

For weird/horror games I follow alpha beta gamer on YouTube, so my suggestion is finding a YouTuber focused on indie games you like. As another user wrote you can browse itch.io featured page to find some hidden gems.

Favourite is a strange term to use about companies, but in terms of how interested I would be if all I was told it was a game from X, it would likely go like this.

  1. Valve
  2. CDPR
  3. Guerrilla Games
  4. Naughty Dog

Capcom seems to pump out absolute bangers lately. They have multiple rock solid franchises (Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter) and their buisness model is still, make good game, sell good game, profit from sales. They don’t shove half-assed life service attempts down you throat and most importantly they don’t fuck fans over. It says a lot when your least acclaimed game over the past 5 years is RE3 Remake with “Very Positive” Steam reviews. I’m really looking forward to RE5 Remake and Monster Hunter Wilds.

catloaf, do games w Is there some sort of Indie Game Showcase?

Seriously? Hollow Knight is/was a huge hit. The other ones I’ve heard of before by word of mouth.

You can easily find indie games on Steam when you browse by any method. The ones of major devs will be obvious recognizable names. Even on the front page of the Steam store, it looks about a third of them are indie games.

Or you could look at other stores like GOG or Indiegala.

roxas2153,

It is true, the gap between Hollow Knight and the other two is large (Steam Reviews as source, and general ease of finding it). But even finding something like Hollow Knight was something that conveniently popped up through either a Curator or in Specials at one point for me (can’t remember for certain).

Growing up, if a game was not something that showed up at E3 or was mentioned by a friend (and then later, showing up on Steam’s Specials or Top Selling), I never played or heard of it. And Steam is good, but I guess I was looking for something that targeted Indie games in particular, and if there existed a yearly showcase or event that was dedicated to Indies.

Hadn’t considered GOG or heard of Indiegala though, thank you for the reference!

catloaf,

Oh yeah, curators is the other one I wanted to mention but couldn’t remember.

Steam does have indie events, but really you won’t find anything there you can’t find just by browsing the store pages.

You can also hear of a lot of games just by being in game communities like here on Lemmy.

And don’t forget about games outside the major stores.

Fall Guys. And Pokémon Unite, but you’d have to emulate the Android on your PC and I haven’t been successful on Linux.

I haven’t, but it’s a bare bones emulator, isn’t it? You also need some mapping software for that game to work.

It gives a full android environment, just sideload whatever apk you need.

There are four studios whose games (and hardware) I buy almost blindly:

  • Valve
  • CD Project RED
  • Rockstar Games
  • Machine Games

They all have brought me tons of fun and jaw dropping moments.

CluckN,

CD Project Red is still up there after Cyberpunk?

aksdb,

I played it on PC. And I loved it.

Half tempted to love any gamedev company that promises to keep making singleplayer games, that can be played offline, without microtransactions and battlepasses. It would take more than a few botched game launches to make me give up on them.

Developers change so much that it is hard to have a favourite anymore.

SCS have been going for a while now and are doing a great job with ETS2 and ATS, supporting the game and releasing/updating DLC regulary. It feels like a true passion project for them.

Most of favourites are small indie developers and games like Live For Speed, Software Inc, Ostriv.
