I bought Diplomacy is not an Option and it has been great so far, really scratches that itch of defending against a huge horde

My grandfather died right around the release of psychonauts 2. I played that game nearly non-stop while I did a 100% completion. It got me through the start of that grieving period. I remember being mad it wasn’t longer because nothing else released at the time was nearly that good when it came to writing and gameplay. Amazing game to be honest. Definitely in my top 10 all time. But I might be biased because of it being exactly what I needed when I needed it.

I played an unhealthy amount of Baldur’s Gate 3 and finished my run. Sadly, Ansur, the last boss before I went onto the finale, ended the Honor Mode part. I’m a bit salty about it, since it wasn’t the boss being too hard or something, but mainly bugs, that did me in.

My first try I got him to half HP, then the game just didn’t want to use any actions anymore. I couldn’t even save and quit, but had to go through Task Manager to kill it. Next try I get him to like 80hp, fresh turn with all of my characters, but the game just crashes. Third time, he’s at 80 or so again, but because of terrible animations I didn’t see that he was supposed to be flying in the air, charging his giga attack. Because of some debuff, he was just writhing on the floor, so I just couldn’t really tell. I had a dozen Globe of Invulnerability scrolls, so I could have survived easily.

Anyway, I’ll do another run next month, after Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and maybe the new Diablo 4 season, but dunno about that last one.

Alwa’s Awakening

It was challenging, but fun. Looking forward to playing Alwa’s Legacy soon which apparently made some improvements.

Jtskywalker, do games w Large Language Models in Video Games?

I think so. New GPUs will be able to handle AI models running locally before too long. I think this will be used for NPC behavior as a replacement for procedural quest / dialogue generation. I have seen a lot of mobile games leveraging this but they don’t seem very good yet. Models need to be trained more specifically for each game I think

Even_Adder,

You can run language models on consumer cards right now. The only thing is depending on the size of the model and the amount of VRAM on your card, you might not be able to do much else.

Jtskywalker,

Yeah there is likely still a ways to go before we can run high end modern games plus a local model, but newer nvidia cards are pretty crazy. It’s probably closer than I think

There are a couple of mystery games that are available in early access/beta that already use LLM AI to generate dialogue.

I’ve messed with 1 and it’s The problem with it is mostly in how it doesn’t necessarily regurgitate the info it knows into something coherent and logical to actually solve the mystery. That or they never ever tell you the truth. Since the only way to solve the mystery is by talking to NPCs to get enough info to piece the puzzle out, it often leads to unsolveable mysteries.

Now, if that problem with LLMs could be fixed, so it isn’t conflagrating multiple pieces of data into something new and novel, I think it would be awesome for making game worlds that are more alive and natural. Like instead of walking up to an NPC and clicking “rumors” you can actually just talk to them like a real person and they would respond in kind, as if the NPC was actually a person living in that world. It’s really the only thing I think would actually work well with generative AI chat bots, but the generative AI still has too many problems to make it truly viable.

It actually works better with trying to play D&D, because even IRL, players often misinterpret rules and argue. Which you genuinely have when trying to play with 3 AI characters.

dp290,

Interesting, thanks for sharing!

We need the names of Jagex executives being shouted from the rooftops in RuneScape forums, and the jeers should follow them to their next job, because people deserve to know when a shitty, product-ruining executive is going to ruin a second product.

Jagex isn’t doing a damn thing. It’s the executives.

FeelzGoodMan420, do games w Metal Gear Rising is seriously overrated

Nah, that game was fantastic.

LouNeko, do games w Metal Gear Rising is seriously overrated

I tried it but I couldn’t get over the fact that there is no dedicated parry/block button. Also the game looks horribly dated with muddy textures and environments.

It doesn’t have the soul of a Metal Gear game. Its quite literally Bayonetta with a Metal Gear reskin. Metal Gears gameplay is mostly about player freedom. You have to get from point A to B and how you do it is up to you. Rising takes all of that away, just hack and slash to kill everybody. Its still fun, but definitely not a Metal Gear players cup of tea.

I had the same realization about 40K Space Marine (the old one). When it originally cane out I loved it, but I replayed it a few months ago and realized that its kind of bad. Its just corridor, arena, corridor, arena, corridor,… There’s not really anything to it, not even the story. Why is it so highly praised? Because back when we first played it we thought it was cool and nostalgia is a powerful thing.

I only played Rising recently precisely because back when it came out it deviated so much from the first Trailers. I wanted Metal Gear Solid 4 but with Raiden, but what we got was Metal Gear Devil May Cry.

One game that we always play at LANs is Spellforce III . It’s got a great old school RTS vibe while throwing some new stuff in the mix and there’s a free version of the multiplayer which gives it a really low barrier of entry.
