SilverShark, do gaming w TIL that Will Wright, while making The Sims, was inspired by Quake

This is awesome. He said indeed also that he had himself a lot of fun designing levels and places for video games, so he though making a video game out of the very process of designing a level would be cool.

A project from Will Wright that always fascinated me is SimAnt, a game from 1991 where you build an ant colony.

Admetus,

Building a world was quite novel back then.

I remember finally getting my hands on the editor for the Build engine after a few years of making maps in Doom and Heretic and had thought 3D level design was only something super geniuses could do… Until Hammer showed it was just the garbage UI/UX of Build lol

ByteOnBikes,

Oh man I remember how incredible Hammer was.

I built my college campus! (And never showed anybody because this was during the Columbine era)

I’m glad that when I made my high school for Counter-Strike, it was back in 1.6 and not more recently. Heard about a kid who did the same for CSGO just a few years ago and he got expelled and I think he was arrested because they saw it like “terrorist planning” or some bullshit…

DdCno1,

Subjectively at least - and this might be rose-tinted glasses influencing my judgment - it feels like it was more common, that certain genres were almost expected to come with an accessible level/map editor. I think I spent more time with the one from Age of Empires than the actual game.

Megaman_EXE,

Farcry and farcry 2 were my map editors of choice

Admetus,

That level editor was awesome in AoE, especially when errr…the nukeboys came out.

DdCno1,

All I’m saying is… BIGDADDY.

INHALE_VEGETABLES,

Sim ant was so awesome at the time, holy shit.

SoleInvictus,

I lost entire weeks of my childhood playing at being an ant.

Now that I’ve typed that out, bug big chunks of my childhood suddenly make more sense.

Edit: dammit. I’m leaving that typo because it’s perfect.

brsrklf,

Yeah, apparently SimCity itself was the result of Will Wright working on an helicopter shoot’m up and realising he had fun making maps for it.

That’s an interesting starting point for codifying a whole genre of games.

zante, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

No hits for me this year 😒

BmeBenji,

Nothing fun at all? Not even games released in previous years? Not even games that you’ve already been playing for years?

zante,

I have a love hate relationship with CoD Black Ops Cold War. It stops me enjoying other games. I need something the break the addiction !

Over the last 10 year I’ve only played a few games that I would say were awesome and they are all pretty obvious.

GTA 5, stardew vallley, god of war, subnautica, dirt rally, cod Cold War, AC Odyssey.

I have a backlog, but I think the dopamine hit of a good CoD round prevents me picking them up.

BmeBenji,

COD is so interesting because there’s so many of them and so many people play them that it seems there’s always at least someone who loves each of the different games

CaptainBasculin, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

Dragon Ball:Sparking Zero.

This is the kind of game I always wanted to play ever since being spoiled via Budokai Tenkaichi. I really enjoyed it even though I pirated it; can’t wait to buy it on a sale.

droenn, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

Pathfinder: WOTR was pretty epic for first playthrough.

Aliens Dark Descent for most intense 40 hours of gaming, ever. Loved it.

BmeBenji,

Ooh Dark Descent looked really cool. Would you recommend it for someone with little isometric experience, let alone real-time isometric combat?

droenn,

I reckon its more if you like the reward that comes with making decisions under stress 😂 if so, yes! But definitely enable the full pause option instead of slow down! Overall its very immersive and the squad management is very light with a good focus on the story and tactics, and stands out for that.

chloyster, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

UFO 50 without a doubt. Most creative bang for your buck that’s ever been released imo

myfavouritename,

Absolutely agree with this. The product could have had fewer games and each game could have been much more shallow and it still would have been “good”. But there’s honestly a ton of bangers in this collection and the variety and creativity is astounding.

Also I understand his house burnt down in the late 20th century, and the joy of rebuilding/furnishing was another motivation for the game.

ByteOnBikes,

Yep! That was the story in the book. He grabbed his wife and neighbor, and when they returned, everything was burned to the ground!

He originally wanted it to be about a game where people interacted with furniture to feel things, and it was called Dollhouse. But play testers found watching their Sims more fun.

Hollow Knight, and it may never be dethroned. Although The Finals gets an honorable mention as it would have taken top seat in any other year.

Not on Steam it’s World of Warcraft, specifically the MoP Remix mode. That was some of the most fun I ever had in the game.

On Steam maybe Lies of P. I played a few great games, but honestly I didn’t really play any GotY material this year on there.

Factorio. And Cities: Skylines 2 if I’m playing it on Windows.

SilverShark,

Factorio just makes hours disappear, it’s an amazing game! Have you played the expansion?

vrighter,

played? Past tense? You must be joking

SilverShark,

Damn, you got me!

Yes, I did.

jjjalljs, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

I… I played a lot of guild wars 2. It’s a good game!

But about 40 games total. I don’t want to be a mono-gamer so that’s nice.

Vampire Survivor: It’s fun, easy to pickup, the sessions are short (less than 20 minutes), and lots to unlock.

… Plus, (if you’ve been living in a cave and didn’t know) it’s free on Epic Games for the next few hours.

THE FINALS

Rather advanced gameplay, extremely fast-paced and chaotic, quite heavy to run, even with most of it running on servers.

But damn when it was first released a year ago, I instantly got hooked from the vibes and then stayed for the breath of fresh air in the FPS genre. The description above also happens to match really well with my ADHD tendencies.

There’s a reason why it took 47% of my entire play time this year.

BmeBenji,

I played every beta of the Finals that I could get accepted into. It felt like what I wanted a new Battlefield game to be. The destructible floors and bridges made it so much fun to set up traps in ways no other game made it possible.

Weirdly enough I have yet to install it since its full release. Still looks like the same amount of fun!

itsaerosphere,
@itsaerosphere@lemmy.zip avatar

The fun is still very much here, give it a try!

HeavyRaptor,

Good game. I played during/after the beta, I felt like it needed a bit more variety in guns and maps. Have they been adding stuff since?

itsaerosphere, (edited )
@itsaerosphere@lemmy.zip avatar

You bet they did:

Season 2 CNS/ “The Finals Hacked” theme:

  • New gamemodes:

Powershift (tug-of-war meets convoy on a moving platform) Terminal Attack (Search & Destroy, but it’s hacking terminals instead)

  • Sys$Horizon, new map, “unfinished/leaked” 80s style
  • Hacking-themed gadgets such as the dematerializer and the gateway
  • Weapons ofc (I don’t remember which ones tho)

Season 3: Japan theme:

  • We don’t talk about ranked changes
  • New game-mode: World Tour (similar to unranked tournament, but 8 teams total, win points progression and end-of-season multibuck rewards)
  • Bow for light, dual blades for medium, winch claw for heavy
  • Map: Kyoto 1568

Season 4: Sponsorships

  • Reverted previous season’s ranked changes
  • New careers: sponsorships (choose which in-game sponsor to sign with, get prizes with their themes and compete on world tour to determine which sponsor wins the season) (yes, you can bet people started dissing each other for fun)
  • Dual eagles for heavy, dmr for medium, shotgun for light
  • Fortune Stadium: the best parts of previous maps, mashed into one and themed with the season sponsors’ colors

Season 5: Time for la fiesta, it’s the anniversary

  • New map: Bernal, Mexico
  • New gadgets: Black hole for lights, chain trap for heavy
  • Shak-50 for heavy, some incendiary shotgun for medium
  • Jukebox to relive all the OST from current and previous seasons
  • 2 new sponsors, one returning

That’s only what I remember from the top of my head, they added so much. Not to mention the copious amount of high quality cosmetics and the very forgiving monetization
