I don’t care how good the story is, 13 Sentinels gameplay looking like a cheap sci-fi movie interface thing just takes me out of the experience, I also don’t like tower defense style games and this is the only thing you will do in-between story beats. I was extremely letdown to get this after the first teasers instead of a mecha vs kaiju brawler.
Then some months later it comes out that localizers were also changing things too far, now I have another reason to not finish it.
minecraft and games like minecraft. i just dont get whats supposed to be fun about them. i dont hate minecraft specifically its a well made game, but i dont find it and others like it fun at all
It’s funny…I bounced right off Minecraft but I like games like Satisfactory and Factorio.
A lot of people play Minecraft as an outlet for creativity; it has an end game with a final boss and a victory condition, but most people don’t even try to “win” Minecraft, they want to build cool things. Well between my electronics bench, my wood shop, my 3D printer and my various creative, design and programming software suites, I already build a lot of cool stuff, so that itch is already scratched.
Those factory building games come with a clearly stated goal: “You’ve crash landed on an alien planet with a hammer and a pistol with 100 shots. Build a rocket.” I’ll spend months of my life building a gigantic complex of individual factories connected by an intricate rail network to accomplish that goal. I’ve heard this kind of thing described as “problem solving gameplay” rather than “puzzle solving gameplay.”
As you say I don’t hate Minecraft, I’m often awed and inspired at the things people have built in it, but it’s not for me.
BioShock Infinite. Mostly because I hated all of the characters, with the exception of the Luteces, and even they were on thin ice, mostly because of Rosalind. And Elizabeth as a NPC companion? I would prefer Ashley from Resident Evil 4 over Elizabeth any day. It didn't help that every time I tried to listen to a voxophone, she'd start talking about some bs, so I'd wait for her to finish and start the voxophone over, only to have her start talking again. When it happened 4 times with one vox, I had to take a break from the game. I just wanted to listen to the damn recording.
Gameplay is great though. I'll play the heck out of the Clash in the Clouds dlc. I get the fun action, and none of Booker and Elizabeth's constant whining.
I started the game immersed in the story, but kind of gave up on it after awhile, I think it was when “Akshually the slaves are evil for rebelling against the people who kidnapped them, took them to a floating island, abused the fuck out of them, didn’t even consider them human, and claimed it was doing them a favor because of White Man’s Burden bullshit” that ruined the spell for me
As cool as the idea of fighting through a dying utopia with factions on both sides trying to kill you who are “equal and opposite” evils, it kind of doesn’t work when one side is blatantly more in the right than the other yet the game wants me to believe it’s “Evil Vs. Evil”
“The only difference between Daisy Fitzroy and Zachary Comstock is how you spell their name!” - Booker DeWiit proving he is the dumbest man alive!
The DLC story was slightly better, but it doesn’t make sense for Elizabeth to go around killing all the Bookers because “Even though I love Booker like a father, some of the Bookers are evil!”, when a multiverse traveler should probably realize that in an infinite amount of universes you’re more likely than not going to find one where Adolf Hitler is known as the Rabbi who cured cancer and paints in his spare time… more than one most likely…
Great game tbh, but the story is such bullshit… I agree with you though, this is not a game you replay the main campaign, you boot it up and do Clash in the Clouds to get the same experience without Booker and Elizabeth being methheads… which is a shame because the characters had a lot of potiential in my opinion… Honestly the whole game did…
You can just tell that there was meant to be more going on with this story, but something clearly happened in development
The gameplay can be fun, but the story just isn’t there. It’s connection to Bioshock 1 and 2 feels forced.
As soon as they do the first “dimension switch”, or whatever, I lost any feeling of commitment since everything done up to that point became worthless to the plot.
My friend who loves the game praises the multiverse aspect of the game the most, and to me it just doesn't make sense, exactly for the reasons you gave. And having Elizabeth be there at the beginning of Rapture's downfall (and actively taking part in it, even if she was blackmailed iirc) didn't really sit right for me, but maybe that's just because I didn't like her lol.
I had totally forgot about the slavery aspect of the game. They absolutely could have handled it better. Like there's a million other ways they could have had an opposing faction who's also not 100% in the right, and that's the one you wanted to go with? Come on. Even BioShock 2 did that concept better with Ryan vs Lamb.
“The only difference between Daisy Fitzroy and Zachary Comstock is how you spell their name!” - Booker DeWiit proving he is the dumbest man alive!
Don’t Starve I already can’t stand Tim Burton’s style, and I really can’t get over the similarities to try to enjoy this game, even though one of my autistic special interests is open world survival crafting games.
Fallout 4 Seems like a perfectly fine FPS, very much not a Fallout game. Leans far too heavily on action and not enough on the RPG elements.
GTA 5 If GTA were a candy, GTA 5 would be a bucket of that candy. It’s fine if you really really really like that candy, but if you’re just not THAT obsessed with the candy, it can get a bit tiring. Having three people with different stories and event going on felt like I never spent enough time with one character to REALLY get into their development. I’d rather see them innovate than just do MORE GTA
I’m with you on FO4. The voiced protagonist is bad for my roleplay and the storyline with my So and baby are all loaded unto me, and I couldn’t give a damn about both of them. The shooting was better than in FO3, I give them that. Now my hopes are high for fallout London to combine the shooting and give me a story where I can immerse myself more
I thought FO3 was a great way to revive the series in a way that would keep interest in it for newer generations. With how Starfield seems to be going, how FO76 went, how Skyrim was compared to past versions of Elder Scrolls, I’m not sure I’ll trust anything that Bethesda spits out until long after release.
Zelda: BOTW is a soulless Ubisoft game clone shamelessly inhabiting the dead shell of the Legend of Zelda franchise. It contains little to nothing that makes the Legend of Zelda games what they are. Gone are fascinating cities and towns, no colorful cast of characters, no real dungeons or temples, no progression system so the entire game is just 50 hours of the game exact same copy-pasted things over and over and over with no change in difficulty or approach. It’s like the first Zelda game in history without a memorable score, in fact there’s hardly any music in it at all. Theres no plot to speak of. It introduced some novel systems, and they deserve credit for that, but it’s just not a Legend of Zelda game at all.
RDR2 is a bland on-rails march from shooting gallery to shooting gallery, with an incredibly lifelike and immersive world that… doesn’t really give you anything to do. And what it does give you, there’s no reason to do. The game revolves around your camp and allies but the camp hardly serves any purpose. You can’t customize it in any significant way, keeping everyone happy and supplied does very little besides reduce the amount of audible complaining. And the game shoves so much money in your hands from the word go, that you never have a reason to do any money making activities, and it upends the plot of the whole game “We just need a bit more money” Dutch says as I have $10,000 stashed in my saddlebags. Everyone seems to love Arthur as a character but he’s just such a bland, indecisive milquetoast guy who doesn’t hold his own opinion on anything. He doesn’t have any personality to speak of until the last third of the game, and then they expect you to have an emotional reaction to him by the end. John was hands down a better protagonist and it’s not close.
Absolutely nothing like Majora’s lol. Majora’s Mask took everything expected about a Zelda game and put a put a twist on it. It switched up the formula while staying true to its legacy. It was a fresh new experience but everything you could want as a Zelda fan was there.
BOTW just abandoned everything good about the franchise and replaced it with insultingly generic Ubisoft inspired busywork. Whatever Zelda DNA that was left is just window dressing.
I WISH we could one day get a spiritual successor to MM, but I guess we have to wait for Nintendo to kick its Ubisoft / Fortnite phase.
Yeah, I played the hell out of gta 3, San Andreas and vice city… But 5 felt very boring. I can’t really nail why but it got to a point where I tried to force myself to play before giving up.
Similar story with RDR, I played the original and the zombie dlc, loved both, the sequel just didn’t do much for me
Never liked GTA games. I find them very repetitive and boring. However, I fucking LOVE Saints Row 4 which I think of as comedy-GTA. Had so much fun pissing around doing insane shit on SR. It’s a shame the franchise died.
I can’t think of a large open world game I liked. Skyrim, RDR2, the new Assassin’s Creeds, Biomutant, Horizon Zero Dawn, GTA5. I feel like they sacrifice the story to fill a world with so many random side quests that it seems like I’ll never be able to finish it. I miss games that I could complete in less than 25 hours of playtime.
Zero Dawn had too many side quests? Imo, it felt like there wasn’t enough sidestory content. Like one or two side quests for a couple towns outside the main city of the game, and that’s it.
I actually really liked the Frozen Wilds DLC because it was a mini distraction from the rest of the game, and explored more of the people that live in that new world.
I also have never been able to finish Witcher 3, started it at least half a dozen times or more, but always ended up losing interest in it after a day or two. Cyberpunk, on the other hand, I think is great. I have several hundred hours into that game and just bought the phantom liberty expansion and started a fresh play-through. I’m really enjoying the changes they made, and I just love how alive Night City feels.
I’m shocked to see you put this in the same breath as the others. I found the story SO in-depth and fascinating that I spent hours just reading lore on the fan wikis. Loved that game but the second one stripped a lot of the lore out and made it more mindless.
Hogwarts Legacy: To be fair it is a big Openworld but it doesn’t catch me. The Story is kind of lame the voice sounds a little bit too Much like a crappy TTS. I tried to finish it but I always stop after like 30minutes played.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt I dislike that the Openworld is like a movie. You don’t need to think where you want to go, you just follow the little dots on your minimap until your are there. Its so utterly boring. I love the souls franchise, you see an NPC, walk up to her talk to her and write the important things down on your Notepad. To be fair, Wircher 3 looks absolutely beautiful after the recent patch.
Edit: I really really dislike Fortnite. Its highly overrated and it isn’t even original.
you can disable all the guides in the Witcher and play it without any gps or handholding. Combine that with the highest difficulty where you actually have to prepare yourself with potions and you have a great experience.
I also couldn’t get into the witcher 3, I think it had been over hyped to me. I found the combat a bit clunky and the story didn’t grab me. I got as far as the undead foetus mission with the baron, and sort of never came back to it
ditto rdr2 - its less a video game than it is a graphic novel read by a semi-literate slow talker
the entire dark souls series is also ruined by clunky controls. give me a Doom, Quake, Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament, Skyrim, etc . . . fps controls pls.
X4 fails because of its controls too. Imagine making a flight sim where you can’t invert the Y axis, or an FPS where the shift key can’t be bound to sprint.
Also, everybody started the round the same, and it was your skill, knowledge of the map etc. Which made the difference, not if you had unlocked some better scopes or weapons
I mean, the no build mode is ok. The concept of building a fort and defending it Left 4 Dead style, if done right, could be endlessly fun with friends. Each wave would require repairs and more sophisticated builds to take on tougher mobs. But yeah, what Fortnite became never drove me to play it unless friends asked me to.
Save the World is very fun. I also got fortnite the day it came out on XBox and loved save the world. When they shut that down, I never played fortnite again… until i saw they brought back save the world and I’ve been playing regularly lately.
Spring engine based RTS games have been the best for a long time. I remember being similarly excited when I started playing Balanced Annihilation, which is the OG Spring based RTS, over ten years ago. BAR seems closely related to BA but has much more impressive looking graphics. Enjoy!
Yeah another big Spring Engine fan checking in here, the development of the Spring RTS engine and games on it has been a long road with lots of fun games played along it, mostly in Total Annihilation derivative games like BA, AA, XTA I forgot the other acronyms… and playing a TA-like game was what brought me like many others to playing games on the Spring Engine….
We wanted to play more RTS games like Total Annihilation but other than Supreme Commander FAF no game companies really seemed interested in doing anything but copying StarCraft (ughhh) or doing something totally different like Company Of Heroes. As a TA fan it felt like the RTS genre cut off its own head by treating StarCraft like it was this perfect RTS that demanded everyone copy it and I NEVER liked it. I liked TA with huge battles, the enormous amount of units with different roles not different gimmicks, the actual modeling of unit’s projectiles not some calculated MMO-like damage exchange, the fact that aircraft actually flew not just hovered, artillery had super long ranges like artillery should and battlefields could be as large and sprawling as my computer could handle.
I hadn’t checked in for awhile, but when I tried out BAR for the first time it got me really hyped again. BAR is so polished and well made and at this point just by virtue of being a TA-like Spring Engine mod there are years and years of tweaks, additions and subtractions to the TA formula that have been hammered out through thousands and thousands of games and many different mods with different ideas of what made TA good. The end result is a REALLY solid TA-like game that has the benefit of years of knowledge gleaned from tinkering with the formula of TA. This isn’t just a clone of TA, it is TA with 10+ years more of development work focused around gameplay balance and fun.
BAR is awesome! The AI got really good too at some point?
I would really consider it a deckbuilder first and anything else second. Obviously yes it has the roguelike elements, but the gameplay is so different from almost any other roguelike. If you like the idea but couldn’t go for the totally card based gameplay, maybe try Inscryption or Hand of Fate.
Visual novels. I haven’t tried many but as a fan of steins gate series, I didn’t find the visual novel fun. Maybe because they were so outdated or because I already know the story but when I played it, I was thinking it would be more fun to just watch as media or watch someone else play while I have my lunch.
It makes sense, but I highly suggest to try and see visual novels as reading material with mixed media (e.g. music). Many are very mid, but some do excel: Higurashi and Umineko are a great example of that.
