Ace Attorney Investigations Collection in my Nintendo Switch.

I was hesitant about playing it as a collection/remake as I already have the game loaded in my DS with the fan translation (at least I skipped the complaints about the change of the character names 😆), and I have played all the prior Ace Attorney games in DS/3DS and I am much more a handheld user than a console user, but I have been liking the improvements that the remake has, and playing it in the big TV has been pretty comfortable for me with this title, perhaps the bigger screen for text is the best reason.

I've been getting back into playing The Finals lately. Kinda similar to Splitgate, in that the mechanics are easy to understand and mastering them will yield you a lot of fun and victory. The movement is very snappy, there's a lot of variety in how you can play, and matches are relatively quick.

It's an objective-based shooter, so you won't win just by getting kills; you have to complete a specific goal before your enemies to actually win. So it's a bit like Overwatch or TF2 in that regard (kinda dated references, I know) in terms of goals and a player's abilities. And the gunplay feels very much like Battlefield, which would make sense because ex-DICE devs worked on this game, I believe. It's also got crossplay.

It's got a seasonal/live service model for cosmetics. The battle pass and any other MTX are all only for cosmetics, though; unlocking weapons/abilities can only be done through gameplay, with no skip mechanics. So no weapons, abilities, maps, game modes, etc can be bought with real money at all. Figured I'd mention, since I know that's a turnoff for a lot of people, but I've been enjoying it as a free player.

Right… Splitgate and splitgate 2 are lies. What you experienced are probably mostly if not all bit matches instead of playing with and against other players. But that is besides the question.

Realistically there have been no actual good games in that niche in recent years (less than 10 years old) and the old ones are either dead unless you like botmatches or have a tiny community that is really REALLY good and will wipe the floor with you.

Anyhow Quake 3 (good luck) Tribes 2 (good luck) Unreal tournament 2004 (good luck obtaining legally, also good luck) Halo (LoL last decent one was reach on 360) There’s more but those are even more niche than the big ones already listed.

Halo CE, Halo 2, and Halo 3 are great. Then the franchise was purchased by 343 and everything since has been a soulless COD clone with a Halo skin… and a random RTS.

343 didn’t purchase Halo, Microsoft purchased it from Bungie and then licensed it to Bungie, then transferred the license to 343 after Reach launched.

But other than that, you are correct on the other stuff.

Ending spoilersThe one thing I don’t really like is how all of the world building is more or less inavlidated by the classic “it’s just a dream bro”.
Yes, the dreamer is supposedly an eldritch being, but I’d like to appreciate all the tiny little lore connections you can find without the looming threat of “this doesn’t make sense because it’s all a dream”. Like with skeletons.
Why skeletons?
All enemies in the game have some sort of explaination, from the simple “this is a fog beast” to “holy knights cursed themselves and became abominable horses, tainting vampire cattle and turning their captors into the puddle of harm that currently stands in your way”. But skeletons?
They don’t have any explaination, unlike the mummies of the Temple of Silence - they’re just nondescript undead enemies where undead enemies thematically fit. The dreamer put them there, because it’s a dream.

Well, that is a very open ended question.

My thoughts on emulation is that it is an absolute necessity in order to preserve the history of gaming. However, it will also probably always be a grey area regarding copyright. Especially with emulation of current gen I find it not okay, since the original creator still earns money with it. But if a game or console is not sold anymore? Nobody loses money from me using an emulator to play Chrono Trigger with save states and increased game speed to make the farming and boss fights easier.

Chrono Trigger is still being sold actually, so probably not the best example. That said, I still have my original PS1 Chrono Trigger disc that I haven’t played on original hardware (or even my still-hooked-up PS3) for a while because I legally dumped it and play it with a much higher emulated disc read speed. As much as Nintendo has made explicit statements to the contrary, it is legal in most countries to back up your own games and do with them what you will.

Meh, the mobile phone port they sell on steam is not comparable to the original, but you are right on the principle.

Notably, the Steam version is a port of the iOS version, making it a HUGE step down from the DS version, which combined the anime cutscenes from the PS1 version with an absolute wealth of new systems and features.

After enjoying Ys I and II, I played Origin, which was hugely disappointing. It just felt so unsatisfying to play, and the single dungeon was boring af. I pushed through hoping at least the story would get interesting, but after almost finishing it again with the second character it never did, so I gave up and dropped it. I’m not sure if I want to try the other games in the series, seeing as this is considered one of, if not the, best.

Literally just started playing Tales of Vesperia (~30 minutes). First impressions are that it looks really nice, the combat feels better than the other Tales I tried (Arise and Berseria) and I’m linking the setting and character designs.

I started playing one of the Gacha games a few months back now, Watcher of Realms, I think the only reason I started was because it showed jiggling boobies in a trailer. The name is goofy and the story is almost non-existant, the gameplay isn’t terribly deep, but has some nuances to it, it’s like a tower defense RPG game. It’s kind of dumb as a game because it records your playthroughs of scenarios that you can then use later on to “Auto-fight” for you as you frequently have to grind for different shit. So you basically set the game on auto-pilot and stop playing the game. I’ve been playing for something like 6 months now, but I’ve been committed from the start to never pay a single dime for it and I’ve stuck with that the entire time. Granted, I’ve put way too much time into the game and, if time is money, I’ve wasted a bunch that way, but I’ve never actually paid for anything in currency. Cheap skate 4 life. I honestly don’t know why I keep playing, knowing what the game is setup for, but I still log in day after day.

I can definitely see how it encourages players to spend money, there’s so many mini-currencies within the game that obfuscate what you need to do to earn this or that hero or get whatever thing you’re trying for, but ultimately the incentive is to buy shit to get further along. In this game though, the rates are so goddamn ridiculous that you’d have to be an impatient jackass to pay the rates they want for simple things that don’t even give any guarantees of better performance in the game. On the one hand, I thing games like this are evil for trying to take advantage of people, but on the other, if you’re that stupid and that rich that you have money to burn on a game like this… maybe throwing your money away on digital stuff isn’t the worse thing you could be wasting your money on (like real world drugs or donating to Trump or something stupid like that). But yes, for kids who haven’t mentally developed yet, there probably should be some sort of protections for them, since they’ll pay for dumb shit at the drop of a hat.

I’m legitimately having difficulty following the flow of this question. The formatting vacillates between question and statement, and I am sincerely having trouble fully discerning the connection between points.

I think this post comes from disappointment with Star Wars Outlaws, which by all reports largely follows the Ubisoft formula for open world games. For this, yes Ubisoft has struck upon a formula that is applied to seemingly all of their open world games, which is indeed overly predictable. For that, I do agree that the rote steps of a collectation heavy game where the player secures territory of the game in order to advance the story is overplayed.

Otherwise, I am stuck trying to tease out the rest of the post’s intention.

Recently the 2 “highly praised” Star Wars “open world” games

I don’t know what the other Star Wars game referred to is supposed to be. Is this referring to Jedi Survivor? That game did have a number of technical problems, but it wasn’t ever intended or marketed as an open world game. Putting even that aside, why are two Star Wars games used as the pillars of western AAA games? What is the point or critique here?

To add to your point, Jedi Survivor was a huge improvement over Fallen Survivor. I’m not sure how you could look at that game and say that there hasn’t been any improvement at all.

Honestly I’ve I did jot know how survivor improved upon the first part since the pc version was so overshadowed by it’s technical problems. Tho I’ve heard the patch yesterday improved the performance massively

I did play months after release and I have a pretty beefy PC so it was fine for me. I did only encounter stutters at one specific area halfway through the game but other than that, it was really smooth for me.

Survivor improve Don the first one by expanding on the stances you had in the first game, a much larger world with a larger variety of enemies and tools you can use in combat. There’s a hub area which is kind of cool but I honestly didn’t really get the appeal of that. There’s also quite a bit of cool moments in the story that were really neat but I won’t talk about it because it’s a spoiler. I liked it a lot actually and it’s a shame all of it was overshadowed by the awful performance on launch.

Ubi actually has 2 kinds of open world games… Assassin’s Creed Style and Far Cry Style. I prefer the former, I was disappointed to see the Avatar game was the latter

I just want to say I was really disappointed when Far Cry 3 basically became the template for Far Cry games.

The main thing I hate is the “observe this outpost from a distance then permatag all the enemies so they’re visible through walls, then take them out” mechanic.

Outlaws doesn’t really feel like either.

It has elements like both, but it doesn’t do exploration towers that unlock areas. It feels more like a third option between the two, which makes most sense because it comes from the devs that did both The Division and Avatar.

I enjoyed Outlaws open world gameplay, even though it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. It was still an enjoyable experience that felt like discovering the worlds on your own, instead of being guided and follow a checklist of stuff to do, despite having a list to get upgrades and do story and missions. It felt a bit more like Rockstar style open-world, where you just go about your business and run into encounters, instead of going from A to B all the time.

I’m right in the middle of this game currently, and I do fully see some of the jank that shows up in this game. And it does have some issues (I couldn’t land my ship on the starting planet until I finished a specific quest, but the game doesn’t tell you this).

However, I’m finding the game pretty fun overall and kinda hope they iterate on this scoundrel idea and make sequel. I’m having fun sneaking in and looting all these places.

I really hope they make a sequel game, or maybe a similar game based on a different character that would allow for a bit of a wider range of gameplay. But I wouldn’t mind if they kept going with Kay, she’s a likeable protagonist to me and I just love Nix.

Have to say I ran into very few bugs and I wrapped up the main story and loads of extras after about 45 hours. Funnily I ran into only one bug after finishing the main story, getting stuck in ingame cutscene-camera that prevented me from doing anything else, including being able to reload the game lol.

There’s definitely been some minor goofy and janky stuff throughout the game, but nothing that ended up gamebreaking. I think the most un-finished part of the game that I wish they’d fixed up before launch is the lipsync issues. It just looks so bad in some scenes and takes away from the otherwise great immersive experience.

Yeah other than this weird thing where the quest made landing the ship weird, I have had anything totally break the game — though it did crash on me once. But the autosave got me maybe ten seconds before that so I loaded right back where I was.

Mostly I’ve just seen little graphical bugs. Like when you fly off world and the “loading clouds” show up. Sometimes there will be a flash of a big, black chunk of the screen that shows up for a split second. Stuff like that.

I wouldn’t mind if Kay got her own little series out this. She’s cool, and Nix is cool. I like them both.

Prepping, still, for a DnD campaign. Pulling all the stops, with music (ripped from Cyberpunk 2077 and looped), art (done by me), branching narratives when my players do something unexpected, custom homebrew mechanics (it’s cyberpunk red ported into 5e, so as best as it can be ported), etc. I really want to start it soon but I have to migrate all the stuff I had made on a foundry server to my computer, and that’ll take time since I’m cleaning it up as I go.

Apart from that, killing bugs and heretics on Space Marine 2, killing bugs and heretics on Rimworld, and killing imperialists and fascists on Squad.
