One day a couple of months after World of Warcraft Burning Crusade came out I was woken up by my friends playing the game. I had left on either Teamspeak or Ventrilo the night before and about 3-4 friends jumped on the following morning. I signed on soon after that and played for hours.

I think that’s the last time I’ve been woken up by people whom I like and immediately began the day with a group activity that involved joy.

Pretty much any of the 2d Zeldas fit this bill. Link to the Past/between Worlds… Link’s Awakening…etc. There’s also a game called Oceanhorn from several years ago that tried to be a Zelda clone, but I didn’t get very far in it.

Actually the official google “play games” app has a nice feature that should be included in play store: it can filter for games without purchases.

Other than that, the mentioned minireview app has good filters.

kipo,

Can it filter for paid games only with no in-app purchases?

daddy32, (edited )

The “play games” can. Three filters I always use in combination: “Premium” (i.e. paid), “no ads”, “no in-app purchases”. In the current version of the app you have to scroll quite down to find these.

Simon Tatham's Puzzles will forever be the GOAT.

LucasWaffyWaf,

Heck, I’ve got it on both my android phone and my Palm PDA. Worth having it on both.

MajorHavoc,

Dang. Nice. Having a Palm PDA with Simon’s Puzzles in 2024 2025 is epic. I would take that thing to parties…and, at the kind of parties I attend, it would make me royalty.

LucasWaffyWaf,

Oh I use it as an ADHD management tool! All the organization and productivity stuff of a smartphone with none of the distractions or dark patterns. Mine is a Sony PEG-UX50, top of the line for 2003 and distinctly 2000s Sony in appearance, function, and annoyances.

MajorHavoc,

That is very cool.

Moonlighter is a roguelike with similar gameplay. The art style also borrowed a lot from Minish Cap.

Obviously, it is not a straight-up Zelda game, but I enjoyed it, and you can tell the developer was a fan of Zelda too.

I don’t know if you’ve played Oracle of Ages/Seasons, but those are two more great Capcom Zelda games.

I saw someone else say CrossCode, and I can second that. CrossCode is the only game I have ever played to perfectly capture the way games felt on the Nintendo DS. Control, aesthetic, everything. It made me immediately nostalgic the first time I played it.

In terms of browsing Google Play there are two alternative ways I’d recommend.

First one is AuroraStore, grab it from F-droid:

The second option is AppFinder, grab that from their website here:

I went outside of my usual wheelhouse and tried playing some of the Wario games for the gameboy advance. Finished Warioware in one afternoon (very fun short little collection of mini games) and currently on Wario Land 4. It’s a platformer with light puzzle elements, and I’m quite surprised at how much I’ve been enjoying it, as I usually don’t mesh with platformers.

In a way, it reminds me of one of the later Commander Keen games, but with much better level design and variety in gameplay.

It’s a polished and quirky little game, and its handheld roots lend itself to short sessions, which has been all I have time for.

I think I’ll be investigating the earlier entries after I complete it. Certainly recommend it if you have access to a handheld emulator!

Wario games have some of the most polished classic platforming mechanics.

My partner and I just finished Cyberpunk. Still addicted Balatro but taking breaks with the latest alpha of Automation to build stupid supercharged engines.

I’d say LoZ: Echoes of Wisdom tried to be like this, unfortunately it’s a bit bland. Might be worth checking if you haven’t yet though.

For something I enjoyed more, CrossCode is a fun top-down action RPG, but it’s more of a sci-fi/fantasy thing and a bit more on the action side. It does have extensive dungeons with lots of puzzles though (often relying on switches, timing, movable blocks and clever ways to use your ball-shooting weapon).
