Dynasty Warriors series. Some criticism is correct, in that they really did release the same game several times in a row with minor adjustments. The gameplay is much more strategic than it was given credit for, though. It’s true your warrior basically feels like a lawnmower demolishing hundreds to thousands of hapless footsoldiers at a time, but the trick is that you are the army’s only lawnmower. Almost everything your allies try will fail catastrophically unless you help them. You really have to time your presence on certain parts of the fight to be where you’re needed. It feels very heroic. Also, the cutscenes are without exception hilarious and drew me to the source material Romance of the Three Kingdoms which has greatly enriched my life.
You’re just upset because I dared to be critical of something you and the bandwagon enjoy.
“my opinion is unpopular, therefore i must be right” will never not be hilarious to me. but hey, go ahead and enjoy the metal gear games. i heard they are a bit underground, but that seems to suit your style
The first BloodRayne game (after the intro level, which is plain bad and almost nazi-free) sees a lot of bitten, shot, dismembered, burned, possessed and exploded nazis.
Honestly the gameplay is a bit clunky even for its time, but if what you need is dead nazis then it very firmly ticks the box.
It got a lot of flak back then, mostly because people were sick to shit of Peter Molyneux promising THE WORLD and delivering, like, JUST A GAME.
But here’s the thing. I didn’t follow gaming news. I didn’t know what a Peter molyneux was. I just know I got a fun little action RPG where I get to be royalty, and that scratched a very specific itch for me.
Lunacid was an okay game, but ultimately I was disappointed.
It was sold as a King’s Field-like game when I bought it (which was in Early Access, before version 0.6 was released), and it shares almost nothing with King’s Field. Like, its a first person game and it has RPG elements, and thats pretty much where the similarities end. In actuality, it has more in common with Shadow Tower than King’s Field.
The weird slime ERP side quest really did not need to be in the game. I think it involved Patchouli ,(which IIRC is intentionlly a Touhou character name reference) but I could be wrong. Also, the anime character art clashed with the environment art style. I love anime, but honestly the anime characters didn’t fit. Should have been a bit more realistically stylized, more similar to the characters from King’s Field 4 or Shadow Tower.
Plus, the developer and I don’t get along. I won’t get into any details, because honestly I don’t care enough about it to explain it all, but they were pretty rude. I choose not to contact them, nor would I play any of their future games. This was before the Early Access update 0.7, in case anyone who has followed the game’s development is curious.
I really like the character design in Lunacid to be honest. It gives the game a unique vibe, lets it be something unique instead of being yet another uninspired parody on From Software games.
Thats what it stands for, yeah. Theres not any erp in the game. The poster above you references not liking kira (the game dev) because of something early access they dont want to explain about. I could be off on my timeline, but iirc thats about when they added pronoun options for the characters.
Doesnt like the game? Thats fine, despite it being my favorite indie game of all time I do think its niche. But I wouldnt hold this posters views with any merit.
Battlestar Galactica boardgame. It’s mostly cooperative, with the chance of having one or two players being traitors, but even without them, it’s very unlikely the humans win in the end. It’s expensive and needs a lot of table space to play, tho.
Captain Sonar can be an interesting choice, since it can be played turn-by-turn or in real time, with two teams of 1-4 each. If you working with your team doesn’t create a sense of connection, I don’t know what will.
IMO, the game is better than it’s reputation - at least in it’s current state. After the .ini tweak to fix the alien ai-typo makes it a bit better - afaik, I can’t remember if my group played it with the fix or not, we’ve played the campaign at least 3 times now.
The game’s not a masterpiece by any means, though. It is pretty enjoyable action game in COOP and fairly high difficulty. Sure, arguments could be made that any game is, but game still more fun than not. Now, would I play the game on my own, as single player? Eeeeeeeh, dunno… But if my gaming group asks to play some ACM, I’m down.
Some random points about the game summarized:
Pulserifle goes BRRT, alien goes splat.
Could do with less of the human/android enemies though, or at least the parts with androids felt like they dragged on for considerable time.
Quite a bit of collectible guns, they’re mostly sidegrades but they are different enough, imo.
runs on a toaster
goes for pennies on Steam sales, so gaming group funny hours per unit of currency -ratio is pretty good, imo.
In order to get good recommendations you’re going to need to provide additional information. How many people are playing? How complex can a game be? What games have you tried and loved? Is there a favorite mechanism? What is the game duration you’re going for? 10 min? 30? 3 hours? What’s your budget?
Generic recommendations based on my library:
Just One - Favorite party game
Brass Birmingham - My favorite; Beware it’s quite complex and lasts around 3 hours
Blood Rage - Cool dude’s on a map game with very nice minis
Turing Machine - Good puzzle game
Slay The Spire - If you love slay the spire, you’ll love cooperative slay the spire as well
Menara - Favorite dexterity game

We’ve really enjoyed playing Slay The Spire on Tabletop Simulator. It’s really fun to try and combine your abilites for the best results. And the roguelite makes it fun to play over and over again, just like the pc game. I would have already bought the physical game if it wasn’t around 150€ here
