fkrauthan, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of Feb 2nd
@fkrauthan@lemmy.cogindo.net avatar

Just started playing Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time.

GrindingGears,

I got super into it in the days after my daughter was born a couple years ago. I had a few weeks off work, so I was letting my wife get some sleep at night and I’d stay up playing Cyberpunk until the baby woke up and needed fed. I’m actually on the last mission on the main campaign, but for some reason still haven’t finished it.

Uhh, because I have a working optical drive. Am I in the minority now? Doesn’t get a ton of use but every now and then I have to rip a DVD I own because it’s starting to die.

@WhipperSnapper@lemmy.ml avatar

I used mine 3 days ago. Admittedly, it had probably been a few years since the last time that tray opened, but all was good!

kipo,

I have two that are constantly hooked up to my mac! One for ripping and burning CDs and DVDs (which I still do regularly, in fact I ripped five audio CDs just today) and one for ripping/burning 4k/blu-ray. I occasionally use both at the same time to make copies of discs, but my need for that is for part of a hobby project.

MurrayL,

Not sure about the minority now, but you will be in a few years if not already. Prebuilt PCs haven’t included optical drives as standard for years now, and good luck buying a new laptop that has one.

Optical media isn’t dead but it’s on life support and will become functionally obsolete in the next decade, same as what happened to magnetic media.

sylver_dragon,

I have one as well in my PC of Theseus, it’s been an ongoing part for more than a decade now. But, I also haven’t used in in a year or more.
It’s kinda funny to think back at how excited I was when my father first installed a CD-ROM drive in our home PC and knowing I could now get some of the newest games which were coming out on PC at that time. And now, I don’t even know if my optical drive is still working.

I got an external Blu Ray drive. It’s pretty sweet

I got an internal BDXL drive and flashed firmware to make sure I can rip the 4K discs I started getting as part of physical bundles. Still need to start getting NAS drives to be ready for when my main PC stops being my daily driver+Plex Server before I had to get a new TV that could view them (still don’t have a dedicated player and annoyed the PS4 Pro didn’t ship with 4K playback). For now I can at least hook my PC to the TV if I really want to watch a disc.

Jericho_Kane,

My pc sonetimes doesn’t start up, i assume the psu is wonky or something stupid like a wonky power button connector. I started to look into it and was shocked when i saw that my pc has a optical drive hidden behind a little hatch. I completely forgot about that. But also shows how much i need it.

Who else wishes there was more semi-attractive PC cases with an 5.25" bay? I have ripped many CDs and Blurays with my optical drive

dRLY,
@dRLY@lemmy.ml avatar

For real. Given how many of the “attractive” cases are becoming very modular/config swappable, It would be cool to see even an add-on option for them that allows changing the faceplate and mount points for a 5.24in bay. Not expecting to see all the “fish tank” cases do this, but some could make it work. Maybe ones that are wide dual chamber ones with metal plate space could have a vertical option.

PacMan, do games w Are mods usually confusing as hell or am I just an idiot?

Depends on the game and how the mods work. I just did a bunch of mods on Morrowwind and there was a tool for it and it was straight forward. GTA IV was super straightforward loading the mods I thought. Dolphin game mods I thought where a little funky till I spent a little time with it and was like oh this makes sense they way they are doing it and I was being a dummy not fully reading the instructions

Isn’t GTA IV a bit difficult to mod? I feel like I recall using OpenIV and having to track down the correct directories to install each part of a mod the right way

bread, do games w Are mods usually confusing as hell or am I just an idiot?

Can’t say that I’ve ever had this issue. Usually mod authors will tell you where to install them, or package the files in a folder structure such that there is no thinking involved.

So I’m just an idiot.

Sounds about right.

reseller_pledge609,

Like most things, you’re just “an idiot” until you figure it out. Like any skill, the more you practice the better you get. Just take the time to understand it better and it will start making more sense eventually.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Even then it can be difficult. A lot of mods have other dependencies that need to be installed and those dependencies and can have dependencies.

Poopfeast420,
@Poopfeast420@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yeah, I usually just follow the instructions, which seems to work 99% of the time. The main problem is usually if a mod still works with the latest game version.

@ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world avatar

Use Nexusmods and their Vortex mod manager. It simplifies it a lot, though you may have to watch a quick tutorial video or two. It’s nothing that you won’t learn, though.

Certain other games may have other mod loaders just for them, that you can use. KSPs CKAN comes to mind, or Curseforge for Minecraft. A lot of games handle mods through the Steam Workshop.

In the case of using mod loaders most of the stuff you will have to do yourself will be limited to keeping mods updated, resolving conflicts, and managing load orders (where applicable).

Mod Organizer 2 is typically recommended over Vortex but it depends on the game. I think Vortex has wider support.

Yes, I’ve used both on Windows 11. Unfortunately, does nothing for the User Interface size. But that’s exactly what I had to do to get the original games to run before this shameless flip.

I wonder if the Clean UI mod would help with your issue. Have you tried just adjusting your resolution though? I’ve heard 720p is the optimal resolution to avoid various bugs

I don’t understand why we let Civ get away with amputating gameplay from the end-of-lifecycle previous game to repackage as new DLC again? If they hit upon great ideas in an expansion, why is that not folded into the core product like most decent games do with sequels?

They started with a triangle for 6, slowly carved it down to a semi-smooth, functional circle, then turned around for 7 and said “how about a cube this time?” Stop reinventing the wheel and finish refining it.

Honestly, the development mirrors my playthroughs of 4Xs: start with something funky and a lil different, struggle to make it work, and then restart when I’m close to done.
