TheFriar, do edc w Backpack recommendations?

Don’t overthink it, look at classic Jansport bags. I’d gone through so many different backpack companies looking for a decent, reasonably priced backpack that wasn’t bogged down with useless shit but still had some organization for my daily carry stuff. I commute to work on the train and have to bring tools, not to mention some odds and ends for sporadic use, rain gear. So I got a bigger one, but it sounds like you could go with the medium size and you’d be right as rain.

It seems like bags these days are really pieces of shit, or they’re these super involved and stupidly expensive bags that are just entirely unnecessary. I’m glad I got a Jansport again. I just wish I had thought of it before I tried like four others that sucked.

DeepChill,

That’s my problem. The bags that I see that look like they would meet my needs are really basic and cheap looking. Like the fabric would tear in the first week of use. I need to carry my work uniform, a BT speaker, 2 Contigo bottles and maybe have room for some other random stuff. I just need to throw it all in a single compartment and go. I only have to carry it as far as the car, toss it on the back seat and then carry into work from the parking lot. Don’t need chest and waist straps, don’t care how thick the padding is in the shoulder straps, don’t care if it’s waterproof, it will never hold my laptop, don’t need all the useless bells and whistles that seem to be so popular these days.

TheFriar,

Definitely Jansport. They have the classic bags that don’t even have the laptop sleeve against the backpad inside the large pocket. Although I found use for that pocket to store my book, so I can always find it quickly and it doesn’t get ripped.

I have the classic Jansport, just broke it out again after my swissgear laptop bag started giving up the ghost. Can’t believe I stopped using it lol, it’s lovely.

TheFriar,

Right?! Jansport served me so well my entire childhood. And then I just totally forgot about it when I wanted a “basic-normal looking” backpack that was simple and made sense. Long live Jansport.

SomeAmateur,

Maxpedition has a “Prepared Citizen” line that is basically a Jansport design with very durable fabric like military packs use. Not everyone’s taste but a cool idea imo

@TheFriar @DeepChill As a generally low-income person who recently spent hundreds on a backpack I will defend expensive products lol. To me, if it uses recycled materials, fair trade labour, and the design is something innovative and thoughtful, it's worth it.

You do pay more for features. I got the WANDRD PRVKE which has a divided main compartment with 3 access points, a handful of hidden pockets, weatherproofing, a very structured and padded harness system and more, because that's what I like

TheFriar,

Fair enough. OP seems like they really don’t need much more than something simple, though. That looks like a great utility backpack for specialized needs and a technical job with many little pieces for specific gear. It looks great, and it’s one of those backpacks that I always imagine I’d really enjoy, but I’m disorganized and like quick access to a big pouch and nothing else. I have a few Klein pouches I keep more specialized categories of smaller stuff in, and I think that’s as good as my organization gets. That bag looks great for professional camera stuff or something.

I don’t hate the idea of exclusive games because they kind of bring more competitions. But I also couldn’t give too much fucks because Ubisoft games suck anyway.

Ubisoft make it pretty easy for me. I don’t have to worry about any of this, because none of their recent titles have been worth spending your money, let alone time on

@MamboGator@lemmy.world avatar

This is my take as well. The last Ubisoft game I enjoyed was Black Flag. It’s a shame because in the early 2000s they were great, but now they’re just churning out yearly sequels to turn Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry into Call of Duty.

@HorreC@kbin.social avatar

well also you might wanna look into pirating their titles (even if you do 'own' them), as they have made it clear they dont want you to have any control over the games you buy, like access to them in the future. So say the epic steam thing goes belly up, epic closes, ubi will not see a reason to give you access on their service or steam if they move their games there.

That was certainly entertaining to watch :D

I guess my ideal gaming community would be a good balance of Srs Gaming Industry News and silly memes/idle chatter, without veering too hard in either direction. /r/games and /r/gaming are neither of them much fun, precisely because of the split.

I vote to keep the leftwing propaganda as a regular feature, so long as it’s gaming-themed. It’d irritate the crap out of that one guy, while also helping ward off the whole toxic-gamer-community thing a bit, and give this place its own unique vibe.

Wait for year or two. It sucks.

Logitech Lift user here. No problems for productivity and gaming over the past year of use!

The Lift is nearly twice as heavy as the MX according to the specs on Amazon. Do you find it too heavy?

memo,
@memo@feddit.it avatar

Check official specs on the Logitech website, not Amazon: that sometimes weights the whole package, sometimes it doesn’t. The Lift is supposed to be lighter and smaller than the MX!

cloudless,

Thanks. It is actually for my wife. She finds the MX too big for her hand, so she is considering to replace it with the Lift.

I actually just bought a second hand Lift, waiting for it to arrive. My hands are medium sized and I always used a modest size mouse, the Logitech G305, with ease.

@CubitOom@infosec.pub avatar

I’m also using the lift. Although I don’t do too many shooters, it did get me through cyberpunk 2077, elden ring, and armored core VI very well.

I’ll also note that I have had no issues with Linux drivers on Arch.

troyunrau, do gaming w What games do you think are unfairly snubbed when talking about the best games of all time?
@troyunrau@lemmy.ca avatar

Don’t get me wrong, I also like TotK and BG3 and just replayed Outer Worlds (Fallout in spaaaace) and love me some “mainstream” games. But I think people unfairly exclude many genres when making these sorts of lists. E.g.: The Sims, Civ5, Minecraft, Pokemon, and many others that sold like hotcakes and have been extremely good games.

Personally, I’m always biased towards 4X, RTS, and similar, and find it strange they’re always overlooked. Europa Universalis 4 is ten years old and still getting DLC and updates – how many people must have played that game over ten years for the studio to justify that continued investment?

navi,
@navi@lemmy.tespia.org avatar

It’s hard to understate the effect Minecraft has had on me.

It got me into programming and modding games. It is such a treasure to me.

t3rmit3,

Strategy games are never featured outside maybe a grudging nod to StarCraft or Warcraft 3. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a list that mentions a 4X, a sim, or a non-Blizzard RTS. The closest you’ll usually see is someone listing Black & White.

Game journalists have to bounce between games as a job, so it sort of makes sense that the majority of them go for linear, shorter RPGs, and thus over-fixate on them.

DdCno1,

I think the actual reason is that they only have a limited presence on consoles, which is what the majority of the English-speaking discourse on games is focused on. The genre also fizzled out in the early 2000s, which doesn’t help.

t3rmit3,

Even on PC-focused publications like PCG, this same trend holds true.

And RTS may have fizzled out, but strategy did not. XCOM2, Stellaris, Crusader Kings, etc, all big recent-ish games.

tacosanonymous, do games w What are some of the best mini-games youve played? (games inside games)
@tacosanonymous@lemm.ee avatar

Animal Crossing on the GameCube straight up let you buy little NES consoles with a small variety of titles.

otp,

Does it actually let you buy them? I thought they were mostly locked away behind special event codes, or even dummied out.

tacosanonymous,
@tacosanonymous@lemm.ee avatar

Really basic ones can be dug up or purchased. You did have to get event codes for some cooler ones.

otp,

TIL, thanks!

TwilightVulpine,

I also loved that they added some minigames from Amiibo Festival into New Leaf on the 3DS: Puzzle League and Desert Island Escape

Glad you’re enjoying the CRPG. There’s plenty of older stuff that’s great in that vein too, one of my favorite older CRPGs that has a great story is Planescape: Torment.
