As long as getting a perfect grade is doable, I like it. This is why Sonic Adventure 2 is a great game; getting S rank is doable.

I decided Sonic Heroes 100% would take more time/effort than I wanted to give, so I put it down.

JTStrikesBack, do games w how do you have fun even a game have a grading system?

I think this really is just a personal preference deal. I WANT games with scores and grades. Come on, game, tell me that I’m horrible and that I need to do better! Maybe I’m into the punishment, I don’t know. Played too much Bop It! as a kid and got used to the guy screaming when I messed up.

This is why I play so many arcade style games, and so many rhythm games. This is why communities for speedrunning, rhythm games, and high scores still exist - otherwise I would think I’m completely alone in this 😂

I’ve seen you post this elsewhere so assume you aren’t just interested in gaming only:

Here’s some that I follow:

  • Anandtech^1: Great general tech website, has some deep dives. It did used to be a lot better
  • Chips and Cheese^2: Insane deep dives into architectures and chips.
  • More than Moore^3: Ex Anandtech editor in chief, does great breakdowns of new AI tech and silicon.
  • igor’s Lab^4: Does some great deep dives into various GPU and CPU issues.
  • KGOnTech^5: Only just followed this blog, seems to do a good teardown on the apple headset.
  • Krebs on Security^6: Blog by one of the best security researchers and breaks down vulnerabilities
  • EE Times^7: Good well written site with overviews on many areas in tech
  • Techspot Featured Articles^8: Mainly gaming and GPU/CPU, but does some good articles exploring games, tech etc

Thanks! Yeah I figured I would ask in each of the communities in looking for content in vs mass asking in a larger forum. Thanks for the recs, I added several! Krebs, techspot, anandtech seem great!

Glide, do games w how do you have fun even a game have a grading system?

Some people play games to get away from the challenges and struggles of their day-to-day. Others play to find new way to challenge themselves.

I like games with clear indicators of “good”, “better”, “best”, even inside wins. Having a grade, or at least some metric by which to measure just how good my success was, is fun to me. I still load Hi-Fi Rush because, even though I’ve beaten it twice over, there’s opportunities to get a higher rank in each stage or in the post-game challenge modes. I raid in FFXIV because I like trying to parse better and better every week. “Haha number go up” is a fun goal in any game where I find the gameplay engaging.

Does this mean I play games “right” or “wrong” while you do the opposite? Not at all. I’d assume we’re just there for different reasons, and that’s totally fine. The good news is there’s games for both types, and we don’t have to play them all.

learningduck,

I’m glad you have fun. If I were younger, I may still enjoy this. Now, I don’t even care about achievements. It’s funny that the latest game that I have the problem with is Hi-Fi Rush.

I love characters and would like to continue with the story, but thinking of grading pushed me off, while grading in Hitman doesn’t push me off somehow.

I guess it’s because I’m bad with tempo and feel that I keep getting B or lower.

So glad that Sekiro doesn’t have a grading.

I thought I’m the only when. Every game I played / watched a review and saw those C/D/A/S whatever I immediately say nope and uninstall. I have enough performance reviews in real life.

Did you know you can get RSS feeds for any Lemmy community? I’ve only bothered setting up one (https://feddit.uk/feeds/c/freegames.xml?sort=Active), but hey, it is gaming content!

TheLongPrice, do games w Suggestions for RSS feeds/content

I like Eurogamer for general news. Some other good ones:

adrianhon.substack.com/feed (game recommendations) buried-treasure.org/feed/ (hidden gems) analogue.gg/rss.xml (weekly link roundups) indiehellzone.com/feed/ (indie games)

The trick is to not give a shit I guess: Just play the game, and if you can’t enjoy it, why bother playing it?

There might be some mods out there to change it if you play on PC though, might also be worth looking into, but at the end of the day: If you aren’t having fun, what’s the point?

Posting to remind myself later to check this. I also restarted my usage of an rss reader, and I feel I’m out of knowing what the good feeds are.

joemo, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of October 1st

Trying out a new build in Path of Exile. Recently got into the game and it’s actually pretty good, I wish I started playing years ago though because there’s so much content 😅

I want to switch to something else soon so I don’t burn myself out on the game.

zachary3752,

The nice thing with Path of Exile is that you can always play next league and try out other content and systems.

I’d suggest picking one or two systems and just really learning those each league instead of attempting everything all at once.

joemo,

Thanks! Been trying to do that as there’s just so much to learn. I’ve stuck to a few build guides (started playing midway through Crucible). I found a build that I like and it’s fun (RF inquis, nice walking simulator 😅) but it struggles doing content that I like (bossing). So I’m trying out a DD Elementalist with the hopes of next league maybe being just a one build guy and respecing once I get some currency.

I have been able to get two voidstones, and the Maven seems doable as my RF but when I read about the fight I must have ignored that last phase and had horrible placement on those pools.

I want to complete all the end game bosses first and then I’ll try to do a deep dive on the passive tree and maybe try my own builds or something.

zachary3752,

Yeah RF is an amazing mapper but not a great bosser. Sometimes I’ll make two builds. One to blast through mapping and one to nuke down bosses.

Or you can use Explosive Arrow which currently does everything well lol

Broken_Monitor, do games w how do you have fun even a game have a grading system?

First play through ignore the grading system. I know I’m going to get a crap grade - I need practice, upgrades, moves unlocked etc. I will only worry about that system on a second play through where I know exactly what I’m doing and now I’m ready to try perfecting it. At that point I must still be enjoying the game and the challenge of doing better. Most games I never do this, but some of them are really fun. I think if you worry about the grade right away its like skipping classes and homework and going straight to the test. Yeah, you’re probably going to have a rough time.

Dark_Arc, do games w Are there any reputable independent gaming sites left?
@Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

If you are okay with Vox Media Group, I’ve been pretty happy with Polygon. They even have RSS!

mana,

I think Mike Mahardy from Polygon is alright, but generally I find their content leans into social commentary more than I want in a gaming outlet. I respect that some people want that, and I’m glad these sites exist for them.

Dark_Arc,
@Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

I haven’t really noticed that…? But, maybe that’s just because whatever’s being said “agrees” with me or isn’t in the articles I choose to read from them (?)

bighi,

I’ve never seen any social commentary content from them. I haven’t watched everything they do, but can’t be that common if I haven’t seen it yet.

lenan, do games w how do you have fun even a game have a grading system?

IMO, just ignore the grading system and have fun. Once you’re hooked enough and actually want to improve, that’s when you will want to start paying attention to it.

Delta V: Rings of Saturn

Such an atmospheric and cosy game. I’m a sucker for hard sci-fi and games that try to simulate real physics to the greatest extent possible.
