MudMan, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

So it seems this may just refer to "official support" and the piece of news is at least misinformation-adjacent, but it does make me wonder if there is any forwards compatibility with the Pro Controller. There are plenty of solid alternatives for Switch 1 and that wasn't particularly picky about taking in third party devices.

Not sure if anybody has brought it up in the news deluge.

Khanzarate,

Yes it has Bluetooth support and, naturally, USB C.

It’ll continue to take anything that supports those, and that’ll include the switch 1 pro controller, since it supports those for other devices.

MudMan,

That's nice. Gamecube replicas are a bit of a niche case, but there are plenty of expensive fight sticks that would be great to use if compatible. I guess we'll know for sure once it's out.

Yes it has Bluetooth support and, naturally, USB C.

Even regular ass USB keyboards work with Switch. Usually not for control input but typing search terms in the e-Shop, for example.

atrielienz, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

That sucks since it has analog triggers and a lot of people I watch were hoping it could be used for certain shooters.

“We’ve updated this article to note that Nintendo has made similar disclaimers with its previous retro controllers, which have ended up working with other Switch games.”

They’re just not officially supporting it. I hope Reto will informally make Metroid Prime 4 work with this the same way as MP1. I don’t like twin stick controls and mouse controls are not feasible on the go.

“We’ve updated this article to note that Nintendo has made similar disclaimers with its previous retro controllers, which have ended up working with other Switch games. While this is no confirmation that the same will be the case with the GameCube controller, it does at least provide some hope that it won’t be as locked-off as Nintendo says.”

Well at least they got their clicks.

MudMan,

I genuinely can't tell if milking outrage is more prominent in gaming than elsewhere. I guess not, because... I mean, look at the planet in general, but it does feel like gamers got to that state of mind first and do it best, at least.

SpaceNoodle,

The headline is not misleading in any way. That’s exactly what Nintendo said.

otp,

It’s somewhat misleading. It’s not providing the additional background information, and it leads the headline with the claim (not that Nintendo is making a claim).

I don’t think it’s a bad headline. It’d be hard to include all the information in the headline. But if someone only reads the headline (something like 73% of people), they could end up with a mistaken conclusion. And those people will have been lead in that direction (so, mislead).

SpaceNoodle,

I think it would be bad form to put their speculation on the headline.

otp,

To clarify, I don’t think the writers did anything wrong. The headline will be misleading because Nintendo’s being somewhat misleading.

I don’t know how much the headline could be improved, if at all.

Nintendo says NS2 GC controller will only “officially” support GC games

Or if they can’t quote “officially”, they could quote “only”. Which could arguably be more clickbaity, but also clue in a casual reader that there’s more to what Nintendo officially says.

shinratdr, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

I doubt it. Why wouldn’t it just be a modified Pro controller like every other classic controller they’ve released. My guess is they are just managing expectations that it won’t be automatically usable with every game and mapped correctly.

I doubt I’ll ever connect this to my Switch 2, it’s going to be a replacement for the aging used WaveBirds that are hooked up to my Wii. With BlueRetro as the receiver, my guess is they’ll work day 1 or shortly after. For that, they’re awesome options.

Boo you whore.

Glad I have a PC. Again.

SplashJackson, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

Lol pathetic

JcbAzPx, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

I guess I’ll just skip this generation like with the WiiU.

WolfLink, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

Huh? My actual GameCube controller works with all games on the Switch 1, although it doesn’t have all the buttons used by some games.

In particular it would be absurd if this new GameCube controller doesn’t work with Smash Ultimate.

madjo, do games w Hades 2 will be a Nintendo Switch 2 console exclusive at launch

Great, but I’ll keep playing it on my steamdeck. With your console exclusivity.

Bakkoda,

I just got mine a week ago. I haven’t turned on my PC since lol

ouRKaoS,

When I got my deck, my instant library of things to play due to old Humble Bundle purchases was staggering.

My backlog would take several lifetimes to complete, and I still by new games because “sale!”

I need to DL all of them before society collapses and there’s no access…

“But there was time now…”

$1-10 now is preparation for the future

@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

That seems like a questionable move tbh

very_well_lost,

I suspect that Nintendo is offering them more than enough money for exclusivity to make it no longer ‘questionable’ for Supergiant, at least from a financial perspective.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I’d imagine the Hades IP makes good money on Steam. It must be a guap unless I am dead wrong.

very_well_lost,

Hades 2 is only console exclusive to the Switch 2; it’s also releasing on Steam.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, yeah I didnt gleam that from reading the word console a million times in the article. Thank you. It makes sense now. Nintendo money + Steam sales.

Stovetop,

It’s no different from Hades 1. It was exclusive to PC and Switch at launch, then released for other consoles 11 months later. If it worked out for that game, I don’t see why it wouldn’t for this one.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

The only thing I know about Hades is its on Steam and every character it shows is chiseled as hell.

RebekahWSD,
@RebekahWSD@lemmy.world avatar

Every character in the first game is hot. Every character in the second game is also hot.

Then there’s Dionysus.

RangerJosey, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is only compatible with GameCube games, Nintendo says

Boo.

I want an N64 controller for my PS5.

Gradually_Adjusting,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

It’s so stupid. I have literally plugged GC controllers into my Switch with an adapter hub, and they worked with non-GC games. This is deliberately worse.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

“We’ve updated this article to note that Nintendo has made similar disclaimers with its previous retro controllers, which have ended up working with other Switch games.”

Gradually_Adjusting,

Oh, so it’s just ragebait and they’re reporting on nothing? I fell for it.

woelkchen,

Oh, so it’s just ragebait and they’re reporting on nothing? I fell for it.

Just read the article for a change and you’d see that it was a later update to the article.

Edit: That’s also literally in the part I quoted.

Gradually_Adjusting,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

You just got done telling me they are reporting as fact something that is likely not so, and now you are scoffing at me for not having wasted my time. If there is any reason for this article to still be published or even discussed, it has eluded me.

gonzo-rand19,

Nintendo said it might not be compatible. People reported on what Nintendo said, with the caveat that they have said similar things in the past that did not turn out to be true.

catloaf,

No, they’re reporting that Nintendo is saying it, and also reporting that in the past it’s hasn’t been true. Consider it a warning, and to set your expectations if you buy a Switch 2.

DoucheBagMcSwag, do games w Hades 2 will be a Nintendo Switch 2 console exclusive at launch

Methinks that’s why Silksong has taken forever to come out. Will likely be a console exclusive as well for a time

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

We already know it’s going to be on Switch 2 and Xbox, including Game Pass day 1. It’s not going to be exclusive, but at the very least, Microsoft paid handsomely for it.

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Oh meaning PlayStation will have to wait then

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Microsoft is bringing their own games to PlayStation at this point. It’s possible it’s kept off PlayStation, but I doubt it. Team Cherry knows what their game is worth, and that would be a massive buyout.

zipzoopaboop,

Silksong hasn’t taken much longer than og hollow Knight. They just announced it too early

H_dev, do games w Hades 2 will be a Nintendo Switch 2 console exclusive at launch

im pretty sure I have it on steam as early access and im waiting for the full release to finish the story…

Koen967, do games w Hades 2 will be a Nintendo Switch 2 console exclusive at launch

Does the Steam Deck count as a PC or as a console?

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

In this case, it counts as a PC, but given that you have to ask the question, I think that speaks volumes.

simple,

PC.

mj_marathon,

The dictionary definition of “console” would include the deck AND gaming PCs.

4am,

The line in bluring, but the Deck can run Windows if you want, it’s a PC stuffed into a controller (and that’s not a dig at it, either)

JakobFel,
@JakobFel@retrolemmy.com avatar

Both. The future isn’t in consoles, it’s in console-like PCs. Just wait until Valve drops the Fremont, I believe it’ll change absolutely everything.

ColdWater,
@ColdWater@lemmy.ca avatar

PC, because console has less games than PC

SchwertImStein, do games w Hades 2 will be a Nintendo Switch 2 console exclusive at launch

I needed to check. “console exclusive” means it’s coming to pc and both switches.

sauce (kotaku)

straightjorkin,

Oh both switches?
