Anticorp, do games w Shower thought, traversal in open world games have turned from game mechanics to loading screens

Eve Online pioneered this approach to loading screens like 20 years ago.

Carrolade, do games w Patient gamer philosophy

Personally I am very willing to pay full price and even occasionally buy pointless extras I don’t care about if it helps reward their passion for a project I see as a valuable contribution. I’ll even pre-order or provide them some free advertising in some cases. Especially if its the sort of dev where it seems like their long-term survival might be in question.

I feel like you can usually tell when the dev needs money or doesn’t.

TacoEvent, do games w Corporate greed is killing RuneScape. What do people play instead?

Try Wakfu. There are a lot of chill trades to grind casually and the economy is completely player driven. There are no NPCs to buy or sell your loot to.

The PvE gameplay loop is really fun. The game has an adjustable level system that encourages players to replay lower level dungeons. Battles are turn based and have a surprising amount of strategy.

The only real problem with the game is that the devs seem to not care about player growth at all. They do zero marketing and sometimes the registration system is broken and won’t get fixed for awhile. It’s like the opposite problem to RuneScape.

Chadus_Maximus,

How’s the bot situation?

TacoEvent,

Minimal. There’s a unique captcha system in harvesting that makes it difficult to bot. The closest thing to bad bots are people running multiple accounts on single account servers to run dungeons. It’s a bannable offense and people do get banned for doing it.

paladin3494, do games w Starfield's first DLC is one of the worst Bethesda DLCs of all time

Not really. It isn’t as good as Far Harbor aeven though the world building is better and more interesting. Of course it’s way worse than Dragonborn. But it’s definitely better than Nuka World and Automaton. And also better than the Pitt and Mothership Zeta even though it’s difficult to make comparisons with Fallout 3

Rekorse,

Hard disagree. Enjoyed all of those dlcs.

Nednarb44, do games w Corporate greed is killing RuneScape. What do people play instead?

You could stand by and hope for great things with Brighter Shores, from one of the original makers of RuneScape. I’m hoping it gives me that seem feel rs did decades ago.

Buttflapper,

I’m done bro. I have no hope left in me after Back 4 Blood. The original creators of Left 4 Dead, totally failed to deliver a fun and interesting game. I can’t believe the whole “original creator” bait anymore

Another_earthling, do games w Day -11 of posting a screenshot from a game I've been playing until I also forget to post screenshots

What an awesome game. Metal gear 1 and 2 will always have a special place in my heart

Semjaza,

I can never decide if MGS2 or MGS3 make my list of best video games of all time.

Both continue to be amazing.

Another_earthling,

For sure!

I used the sound effects of metal gear for years on my phone :D (youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLzY7EDSZRz-dy23XaO11b…)

I should tell my family that they must play the metal gear solid game over sound at my funeral lol

Do you also have many special memories with those games?

Semjaza,

The sheer joy of MGS2 the first time. The mix of shock and shlock at Ocelot’s possession by Liquid’s arm. Being totally stumped by “Fission Mailed” the first time it came up. Getting annoyed at the swimming section with Emma.

With MGS3, slowly realising the wide ranging freedom in how one interacted with the game world. Watching my brother get slaughtered by crocodiles. The bizzareness of the pain and his bees.

They’re both well made engrossing games with a serious point but don’t let that get in the way of fun experiences.

Another_earthling,

I see, I see

If I think about the first time playing mgs, it just blew my mind what you can do there. Even the simple things, like when the soldiers saw your footsteps in the snow. What they did with that game back then was extraordinary in many ways.

randon31415, do games w Why do Counterstrike and the other top 10 games on Steam NEVER change?

CS probably has some sort of skin money-laundering bots in it. I would see it more as a financial vector and less of a game if that were true.

bokherif,

Depends on how you look at it. CS is the only thing I’ve been playing after years of gaming and I think it will stay that way due to the simplicity and the familiarity of the game.

Chee_Koala, do games w I love diablo-likes, but they're also really annoying.

Maybe combine the loot fest with some hades difficult combat? I have similar feelings as yours, the genre is really cool but in the end, it’s all just this hidden grindfest? At least with (real) brutal combat, you still need to “make it happen”, big numbers is just the req.

TheBananaKing,

I dunno if it even needs to be difficult; even a bit tactical would change the nature of the thing. As it is the mobs in these things tend to be mindless converging waves; what if they set up set pieces, ran for help, dived for cover, used supporting fire etc etc?

Also perhaps overambitious, but what if the difference between low and high level enemies wasn’t their HP or damage, but how tricky and organised they were? What if leveling up didn’t make number get big, but instead gave you more options in a fight?

jjjalljs,

What if leveling up didn’t make number get big, but instead gave you more options in a fight?

Horizontal progression is pretty cool .

Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t want that. They want to feel cool and competent without actually doing anything. That’s not to say like you need to “earn” your fun or whatever. But that the progress quest number go up don’t think too hard is immensely popular with a lot of people. They don’t want to be challenged.

And that’s fine. It’s a game. It’s just not a game I want to play all the time.

I’ll say DA2 and Dragon Age Inquisition both have story modes, where combat definitely takes a backseat - way more so than Origins. The story only gets better too, and with DA4 coming out next month…

Yeah, that’s a good option perhaps. I grabbed em recent because of a steam sale, but never played them before. Appreciate the rec :)

saltesc, do games w PlayStation product manager says ads being shown was just a bug

Oh, I thought he was going hard on the trolling, implying the bug was that the ads are broken when offline.

undergroundoverground, do games w Horse archers ruin every game they are in.

Much like in real life, see them off with large groups of light cavalry. Meet them on their own terms with something that can chase them down and mob them.

Edit: but yeah, I find them to be largely ineffective or game breaking and nothing in-between.

I tried darkwood this weekend, and it’s left me torn. I really enjoy certain aspects about it, but I feel like the pacing is weird.

I finished Still wakes the deep the other day and I thought it was ok. It was an interesting environment to explore, but I didn’t think it was all too scary.

I’m off to find a different horror game to play now.

Dutczar,
@Dutczar@sopuli.xyz avatar

What’s up with Darkwood’s popularity recently? I know Pyrocynical made a video about a week ago, but I started it before that, because of a friend recommended it to me like a month ago. And I think I saw it mentioned elsewhere somehere inbetween too.

I generally don’t play horror games, so Darkwood scares me enough that I only play for maybe half an hour during daytime. Might take a month to get through.

Megaman_EXE,

My guess is that people are getting into the Halloween Spooky vibes already! But otherwise, I don’t know. Darkwood was free on Xbox games with gold a long time ago, and I snagged it then, but I just never got around to it until now

GammaGames,

LOOOOVED darkwood! It took me a bit to get a feeling for the game, but after I got my daily rhythm I found the gameplay satisfying, tense, and occasionally scary.

Got back into Yooka Laylee after a fairly long hiatus. Still on the first 2 levels because of the high amount of exploration and things to do, so I’m not far at all, but definitely having fun.

Echo Point Nova (Steam)

(Made by the same folks behind Severed Steel) A short and sweet, low-fi yet beautiful co-op (and optionally PVP) movement shooter with extremely satisfying projectile mechanics, destructible environments and a gorgeous soundtrack by Floating Door. Zip through at ridiculous speeds across a series of mysterious floating islands with your hoverboard and grapple beam. Inch closer to god-like power as you progress.

Definitely not for everybody but there’s a demo (which can also be played in co-op) available on the store page.

Nine Sols

A fantastic metroidvania that’s almost flawless. It has great combat, a great story, great soundtrack, and beautiful art. Highly recommended to anyone into these games.
