Seems like the reviews are generally positive but they also are kind of all over the place! 🤔

With an 88 average and 94% recommendation I’d say it’s well received.

GrayBackgroundMusic, do gaming w Who's been playing Wayfinder?

I’m waiting until it’s out of early access. I don’t have time these days to beta test games.

Same, especially when they even charge us for the privilege. Maybe I give it a try once it's actually f2p, and hopefully some of the kinks get ironed out by then as well.

Mongostein,

Yeah, but you get to be first!

Essence_of_Meh, do gaming w What's wrong with the Saints Row reboot again?

A lot of reviews and comments (in general, not here) went with a very surface level "critique" about the game without diving into what failed compared to previous titles.

For me personally, the new game missed a lot of what made the previous games special writing wise - characters are barely that, story is way more contrived and bland. Gameplay and activities are nowhere near what we had before as well. It's just a weaker game with a nicer coat of paint.

I know that might be a tough sell, but I feel like this video by Tehsnakerer gives a really good look into what went wrong while avoiding (and even calling out) some of the most common complaints. It's a good watch but it's also 2.5h long and not everyone has time or interest in that. If that's the case I might write a short summary when I have some time.

That said I already had some problems with SR3 and 4, doesn't mean I'm going to try and force people to hate them. If you had fun with the new one that's the important part.

Zoot_,

Love that vid and Tehsnakerer. Big ups for a solid recommendation.

youRFate, do piracy w What are good mullvadvpn alternatives with port forwarding

I use azire now. Works well so far.

SexualPolytope,
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I don’t really see people recommending Azire. How are the speeds?

youRFate,

I like how they have an api for stuff like port forwarding etc (albeit with mediocre documentation), and how they use all their own servers.

So far I could always max out my connection, it is only 100Mbit/s tho.

adonkeystomple,

Been thinking about trying Azire, do they provide static ports?

youRFate, (edited )

No, the ports expire, but you can script the renewal / new port process via their API. I want to set up a job that gets a new port like 1x per week and tells it to the applicating using the port. Haven’t done that yet. So far my port stayed active for like a month.

adonkeystomple,

Oh that’s neat. Yeah I use Airvpn currently, but would be interested in Proton or Azire if I could automate with a script like you said.

EvaUnit02, do gaming w Fighting game stick recommendations?
@EvaUnit02@kbin.social avatar

I can't think of any wireless sticks off the top of my head other than 8Bitdo's offering. They're generally not legal at tournaments.

Personally, I like just about anything from Hori. I like their Fighting Edge stick a great deal. It doesn't seem to be in production anymore, unfortunately. I've since modified mine pretty extensively but I liked it a lot right out of the box.

I have a Qanba Obsidian that I use whenever I play games on my computer. Again, it's out of production but Qanba now offers the Obsidian 2.

They're two of my favorite sticks and I own a lot.

SteleTrovilo,

Thank you! I hadn’t heard of Qanba before - they definitely have some interesting joysticks.

HovringSquidworld97A,

The 8BitDo stick has been pleasant to use, and is compatible with a ton of systems. Why is it banned at tournaments? Wireless? Or something else non-standard about it?

EvaUnit02,
@EvaUnit02@kbin.social avatar

Wireless. While players should be unpairing any controllers prior to their matches, sometimes they don't and a third party can wirelessly interfere (intentionally or not) with a match.

HovringSquidworld97A,

That makes sense, thanks!

I’ve had my eye on this one and am very pleased to see it score so well.

Working fine on my end - sounds like ISP filtering or possibly a firewall setting. With an ad blocker to handle popups, you could also try g o k u dot s x - not quite the same server collection, but you might find what you're looking for.

open_door,

That was it, yeah. Thank you.

arudesalad, do games w Why do modern strategy games hate the grid?

I think your just playing games that don’t have a grid. I still play a lot of games with a grid. If you want a strategy game that has a grid, my dad has been playing a lot of jagged alliance 3 and has been saying very positive things about it.

Unless they start offering on-prem or there are some very high profile server hacks I don’t see that being possible. Unlike media and client software they don’t need to provide the core functionality to end users, just the output.

Thelsim, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of August 27th

Like many, I’ve been playing a lot of Baldur’s Gate 3. I love the game, but part of me is already longingly looking at the Pillar of Eternity or Pathfinder games for a bit less complicated level design.
The 3d worlds are nice, but I always have the feeling like I’m a little lost.

rivingtondown,

The Pillars and Pathfinder games are both relatively daunting in terms of world size and, at least for Pathfinder, the rules are much more gritty… remember Pathfinder is a spin-off of DnD 3.5e and sticks relatively closely to that. While BG3 is based on the much more “friendly” DnD 5e rules. Pathfinder is much closer to BG2 than BG3 is, gameplay wise.

The big differences between BG3 and the other modern CRPGs is that BG3 does an exceptional job at presenting unprecedented player choice in traversal and combat. Other games have dialogue skill checks and all that but traversing the world is flat, literally practically menu driven and combat is all measurements and numbers. BG3 has free-form qualities that, in the world of video games, have so far only been utilized in immersive sims like Deus Ex and, oddly enough, I’d say the modern 3D Zeldas.

Thelsim,

Oh, I agree on all those points. The rules are definitely easier to understand, especially compared to Pathfinder. And I do like that you are more free in how to resolve a conflict.

The thing I meant was that for me, personally, interacting with the world is daunting. Having a 3rd person view of a fully 3d world filled with tons of items to interact with and with different elevations makes it hard for me to make a mental map of the game world. It’s not such a big deal for Deus Ex (where it’s in 1st person and you can get really up close to things) or with Zelda (where the amount of stuff to interact with is a lot more sparse). In BG3 I just constantly feel like I’m lost and missing out on things that might have been hidden from view because I looked at it from the wrong angle.
It’s just me. I miss the overview of the flatter maps in those other games. It allows me to focus more on the story and the exploration funny enough.

Again, I agree with everything else. I still love the game and the design, I just realize what I’m missing from my other favorite games.

rivingtondown,

I feel you on that front. I have a Steam Deck and use it over my PC 90% of the time and even have BG3 running well on it but I prefer to sit at my desk for this game because the clutter is so dense that I need that big monitor and mouse to pixel hunt for all the little items and clicky things hidden around the world… and being able to spin that camera quickly around with a mouse while traversing is super important to catching things

empireOfLove, do piracy w What are the ways to play minecraft offline (single player)?
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

Mineshafter[dot]info is what I used to use back in my cracked minecraft days. It basically provides a modified launcher that patches itself and the Minecraft JAR to look for the Mineshafter login servers instead of Microsoft’s. It lets you use singleplayer as well as multi-player on cracked servers that do not force online authentication.

The site is still up and paid for, which means someone still gives a shit about it, so I think it may still be functional. I haven’t used it in literally ten years though, so I doubt it supports the latest Minecraft versions though, but you can try it. Oh God. Ten years. I’m old…

bartolomeo, do piracy w What's the best way to rip music off Spotify so that I can store it on my HDD?

Freyr is amazing.

Chewy7324,

According to the readme it downloads the songs from youtube or other sources and then adds metadata after reencoding. This means tracks might include unwanted audio from a yt music video.

But I also used tools like this in the past, they work great.
