Aielman15, do games w Can someone explain to me why Honkai: Star Rail is treated as something other than trash? I keep seeing posts about it, all over.
@Aielman15@lemmy.world avatar

The inherent appeal of gacha games is always cute anime girls/pretty anime boys. I doubt anyone will find any of these games appealing to them if they don’t like the art style in the first place.

I haven’t played Honkai or Genshin Impact, so my understanding and knowledge of both games is fairly limited (mostly hearsay from people who actually played them), so take the rest of the message with a healthy dose of salt.

I’ve heard the production value is excellent compared to most other mobile games: for the low price of $0 (gacha microtransactions excluded, of course) you get a full open world game with nice graphics and animations and a fully fledged story (I’m unsure how good that actually is and from what I’ve seen I’m inclined to think “not much”, but it probably appeals to anime fans).

I’ve also heard that you can play Genshin Impact for free and still get the characters you want if you’re patient enough, which is not something that can be said of most gacha games. The PvE nature of the game means that you don’t necessarily need the best lv999 S-rank character to compete with other players, and can enjoy (most of?) what the game has to offer for free, which means that you don’t need to engage with the gacha aspect of the game if you don’t want to. I don’t know if that applies to Honkai as well, but considering it’s a very similar game from the same software house, I’d say it’s possible.

In conclusion, I don’t think the game is worth checking out if you don’t like anime and/or mobile games, but if you like any of those and are a young person without a stable income, a f2p open world game with bells and whistles such as nice graphics and animations could be appealing. Although, as I said, my opinion is mostly derived from hearsay and a quick glance at YT to check what the deal was about, I won’t pretend I really know what I’m talking about here.

ChillDude69,

Playing gacha games for free, without spending money is still supporting them. Just like continuing to use Reddit is supporting their shitty policies, even if you don’t pay for Reddit Gold every month.

Aielman15,
@Aielman15@lemmy.world avatar

Sure is, and I never said otherwise. I doubt that people playing those games care. If they are playing those games they probably like them and are okay with the idea of supporting them.

ChillDude69,

I guess. I suppose I just expected some more principled passion from a smaller, more focused, more outside-the-mainstream community.

kaosof, do games w What are some hidden indie gems nobody knows about?

Blasphemous.

Fantastic metroidvania meets soulslike game. The art style, the lore, the atmosphere, and by God - the music!

The combat is not super great, but it’s capable enough for a metroidvania.

I haven’t played the second one, I hear it’s kinda hit and miss.

ExLisper,
kaosof,

As far as I know, a ton of stuff in the game is based on Spanish folklore etc as well.

learningduck,

The first one also meh at releast until several patches later. The second one is on the easier side as the penitent one is now more agile.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

I got this game recently since I got hooked hard on Dead Cells, and needless to say combat was the disappointing part. Coming from DC it feels so rigid and limited, needlessly punishing. But I got the game for art, so that part is great. It’s also weirdly poorly optimized. They made the whole game in one resolution and are scaling everything, like whole screen. So your choice of resolution might end up weirdly stretched. An odd decision.

GammaGames, do gaming w The Witness Appreciation Post

I played the Witness for… maybe 5 hours? when it came out. A friend got all the beacons and it took forever! I was amazed at how much variation this game had in its puzzles.
I should really pick it up again, maybe I’ll get my partner to try it. Is it on ps5?

also obligatory Joseph Anderson thar be spoilers

bermuda,

It’s on PS4, so there should be backwards compatibility

EvaUnit02,
@EvaUnit02@kbin.social avatar

I can't comment on this title in particular but if you load it on your PS5 and receive a toast which reads something to the effect of "when playing on PS5, this game may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior" then it means some part of the game is absolutely fucked up but still "playable."

For example, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time messes up very late in to the game on the PS5 where a space ship environment zooms very far out, the controls become locked in such a way where camera control doesn't work, and directional movement controls seem arbitrarily mapped. While someone more patient and talented than I may have been able to navigate through that issue, I couldn't proceed until I continued the game on my PS4 via cloud save transfer.

rogue Lords: it is inspired by Slay the Spire (StS). Card game with roguelike element. Here, the cards are replaced by your minions skill. But the right set of skill is less frustating to build than in StS. Making it a more fun experience, and the graphics are way above StS(not hard). As in StS , with luck/skill you can manage to build some 'infinite deck" where you never let go of the control of the battle.

OMG-Z It’s a playstation mini for the PS3/PSP.

Warp on the PS3.

Donut County isn’t really a nobody game. But I never see it mentioned.

Treasure Adventure Game, maybe? I believe it's free, though there's a paid remake of it named Treasure Adventure World now.
Cutesy "kid goes on adventure" 2d platformer with sailing and some Metroidvania-y or Zelda-y factors. Cute pixel art and the music is very well done.

@Diotima@kbin.social avatar

Real time strategy games are not my cup of tea. Nothing against anyone who enjoys them, understand, but they're basically exercises in who can do the clicky clicky faster. Give me a turn-based game any day... where you actually have to out-think versus out-click your opponents.

Oh, and any game that pits console players against PC players. Yes, let's put the 'stock controllers only' console players up against the PC players with $8,675,309.00 of custom equipment and every cheat they can get away with. Sounds like a reasonable plan. Overwatch, I'm looking at you.

Renacles,

That depends on which RTS you play, Aoe4 has one pro with 120 or so APM which would be unthinkable in StarCraft, strategy is much more important.

Diotima,
@Diotima@kbin.social avatar

I somewhat exaggerate. They can be fun, but turn based is more my style.

CoconutKnight, do games w Which games do you dislike, but the rest of the world loves them?

Not sure if this even a beloved game, but Assassins Creed Unity. The setting has so much potential but the story feels so slow and I find it boring, the controls took some frustrating time to get used to and Paris is just not a very visually compelling place to be at. I used to love AC2 but Unity… idk

I started playing Firewatch a while back and then got distracted. I recently picked that back up on my Steam Deck.

On the PC I’m playing Remnant 2 with my kid. I’m not into soulslikes but it’s not bad when there’s 2 of us.

I’ve also started playing Palworld to see what all the fuss is about. It is amazingly derivative. It’s like Ark and Pokemon had a baby with maybe some fortnite sprinkled in.

After finishing my second playthrough of Loren the Amazon Princess, I’ve now started Tales of Aravorn: An Elven Marriage. And I must say, it is pretty good. From what I can tell up to now, I like Elven Marriage more than Loren, so it’s a bit sad, that it didn’t sell that well…

Apart from that I’m playing way too much Against the Storm. It’s a pretty fun city builder rogue-like. Basically Settlers, but only the fun parts, with a bit of random challenges sprinkled in.

I also tried to play Albion (the DOS game) again, but I died in my second battle and hadn’t saved from the beginning… 90s games were something different, when it comes to difficulty. I will definitely start over again soon, this time actually saving frequently.
