ampersandrew, do gaming w How to gift a video game if I don't know the platform
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

GameStop gift cards probably won't help you if they want the game for PC. There are also a lot of games that you can only buy digitally. Do you know which game you want to get for them? That could narrow it down. Otherwise, you might have to get even sneakier about finding out what platforms they have access to.

FIFA and Madden, which are at least XBox and Playstation I believe. Not sure if they are on PC.

Okay, that helps. Both are on PC, but it's unlikely this 11 year old plays them on PC, as this is primarily a game people play on consoles in either case. Both will also have physical versions. If I were a betting man, I'd bet they want the PS5 version, but that's like a 65% chance. I'm not sure what your situation is, but surely you could ask the kid's parents, right? Also FYI, FIFA is the old name for the series, and starting with this year, it now goes by EA Sports FC.

I recommend you follow Felipe Pepe’s twitter, he often talks about asian games that are ignored by the western media even though they sold millions of copies. x.com/felipepepe/status/1728297222541025358?s=20

One of the more recent ones was the ending of A Plaguetale: Requiem. Amicia and Hugo stay near and dear.

Not sure Cyberpunk has actually made me cry but there’s been more than a couple moments where I was right there emotionally.

Now you’ve got me longing for my old Atari back. My top 3 games by a country mile were:

Supercars 2 - must have played it through a thousand times.

Ellie Frontier - sank many hours in to it despite never being very good at combat.

Sensible soccer - one of the most fun games I’ve ever played. Would often play with my step dad. Some epic matches.

okamiueru,

These days you can emulate old consoles almost perfectly, with a lot of quality of life improvements. The whole memory can be written and retrieved in milliseconds so you can save everywhere and anywhere.

Mamertine,

A raspberry pi 4 can emulate any console up to the N64. I’m still running a pi 3. The 3 can’t do the N64 well. I’m unsure how good the pi 4 is with the graphics of the N64.

I can run basically any game published before 1995. It’s just a matter of finding roms. They used to be easy to get, but Nintendo got angry with websites that were hosting them. So now you have to dig a little more to get them.

Mega Man X on the snes was my favorite for the console, the day I got to play the first time I managed to beat Chill Penguin, Spark Mandrill and Armored Armadillo. I couldn’t for the life of me, for the next 5 or so hours, beat any other boss. That I played that long without any progress probably shows my dedication.

Donkey Kong Country 2 was my second fave. Never managed to “legally” get all 75 kremcoins, or beat all the 5 special stages back then. Hell, even getting to the final world was a challenge back then.

On the ps1, Mega Man Legends 1 and X5. I’m only counting the games I played when I was “a kid” (< 12yo). I still love most Mega Man games.

Gabu,

Mega Man X

I personally maintain that the first Megaman X is the best game ever made. The controls are so tight, even modern developers have a hard time achieving something similar, the progression is straight up perfect, the story is great and the blend of easy/hard secrets allows for a lot of replayability for a game that old.

Started playing Yakuza like a dragon. I wanted to start a new RPG. Also started a new playthrough of Eden Ring, following the wiki since I missed a lot of stuff in the past. Going with a samurai build
