If I had to pick one it would be Terraria. But there are many good options.

Rolive, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of March 17th

WH40K Boltgun and Ninja Gaiden Black.

Ninja Gaiden has a nostalgia factor to it and Boltgun is just classic old school FPS. I have old taste in video games.

Voroxpete, do games w What are the best indie games you've ever played?

There’s a lot I could list here, but I’ll focus on a few that I’ve played recently, that don’t seem to be getting as much mention.

Slay The Princess - A literally flawless game. I genuinely mean that. There’s not a single thing about this that I can think of to criticise. The writing is fantastic, the art is beautiful, the voice acting is note perfect and the score is gorgeous and haunting. The concept is insanely inventive, and the execution even more so. I finished my first run in about 3 hours, and then looked at what other people were saying about the game and realised that I had only just scratched the surface. As in, other reviews seemed to be describing an almost entirely different game to the one I played, because literally every choice matters.

OTXO - Roguelike Hotline Miami with bullet time and a bartender who sells bottled superpowers. There’s really not much more to say than that. The soundtrack is like a Trent Reznor fever dream, and the whole thing has the feeling of encountering Quake for the first time. Just a mad demented bloodrush of insane violence coming at you non-stop.

Vampire Survivors - It’s super cheap, it’s super chill, it seems like absolutely nothing and then oops its 3am and you’re telling yourself you can still get in one more run (no, for real, this game actually fucked with my sleep for a while).

Shadows of Doubt - OK, this one is still early access and I don’t actually recommend buying it right now, but absolutely wishlist it for the 1.0 release. It’s rough around the edges at the moment, but GOD FUCKING DAMN WHAT A GAME. The sheer audacity of the idea behind this is unbelievable; a fully procedurally generated “city” (about a 3 x 4 block grid on medium size) where every room of every building can be entered and explored, and contains a business or a resident. Every person in the city (up to around a 1000 at the largest sizes) has a complete life; a job in the city that they go to at scheduled hours, places they like to hang out, relationships, maybe a partner, fingerprints, medication for medical conditions, a blood type, a shoe size, height, weight, age… And they do crimes, which you then get to solve for money. You’re a PI, in a demented alternate history 1979 (“The Bourbon Empire never fell and now Coca Cola is the President of a retro-cyberpunk dystopia”), down on your luck and taking any job to get by. And when I say “solve crimes” I mean it. This is, IMO, the first game ever to get detective work right. There’s no Arkham “Turn on detective vision and walk around until you see all the clues” going on here. You have to actively think about the crime and how to approach it. You can canvass witnesses, dig through government databases, gather prints and match them to a murder weapon, examine the corpse and make inferences about the time of death from which you can pull security footage and look for suspicious characters. You chase down leads, some of which end up as total dead-ends. You have a god damn pin board with string on which to put all your evidence, and then cover it with sticky notes. And it’s all you doing this. The game has a tonne of helpful quality of life elements designed to make the process of gathering and assessing evidence as frictionless as possible, but you’re the brains. It’s on you to actually make the deductions and connections and puzzle out what happened. This game is a work of demented genius and I’m slightly scared of the people who made it.

You beat me to it!

Looking forward to this game, I’ve always tried to get into DD1 but it’s just too clunky in many aspects (also, lots and lots of walking from A to B)

Capcom is on a roll, almost every single one of their releases has been unanimously praised.

I’m happy for the fans of the IP, I have a few friends who loved DG1 and were waiting for the sequel. I’m also a bit curious about the claims that they improved on the storyline, as it was by far my biggest gripe with the first entry, so much that I never bothered to finish it.

Triple_B,

I actually loved parts of the story from 1. Granted, a lot of it was pointless, shallow, needed expansion, better written characters, so on and so forth. But every scene with the dragon was enthralling. A lot of what happened after you beat it was interesting. And idk how to do spoilers here so I’ll be vague, but what happens at the final boss on a second playthrough blew my mind. I had no clue, and it had been hundreds of hours since, so my jaw literally dropped.

Renacles,

The first game had a lot of good ideas for a story and messed up the execution of pretty much all of them but the dragon itself.

Triple_B,

Too true.

Vipsu,
@Vipsu@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly they’ve been on a steady decline in my eyes at least. With each and every new entry they’re becoming more and more like the rest of the Triple-A studios.

Sure many of their games are still decent fun if you can ignore:

  • Dark patterns
  • Microtransactions in full priced games
  • Battle passes
  • Denuvo

Personally I just can’t as mere existence of these thigns ruins my trust towards these developers/publishers.

KingThrillgore,
@KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml avatar

Can’t you all complain about games that are out having issues? Like Helldivers 2 and how the lightning gun was shipped in a sorry state and how Arrowhead lied about the flying bugs?

(I kid, this game sounds like a mess and my opinion of Capcom was already pretty bad)

The timing couldn’t be better for me. Just last night I found I couldn’t be bothered play my current game anymore. Never played DD1, but I’ve never much bothered with stories in games.

I never played the first game. But I loved BG3 so much (having never played BG1 or BG2) and it was suggested I’d probably like this game too. I worry because I keep seeing it compared to Dark Souls, which isn’t a game I liked.

ryven,
@ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I don’t think DD1 and BG3 have very much in common, honestly. DD1 was not a game where you engaged in immersive dialogue or developed interesting relationships (well, there was a relationship mechanic, but if you didn’t know how it worked, it didn’t feel like you had a lot of input.)

It was more a game about walking around surprisingly atmospheric environments and then fighting for your life against surprisingly difficult encounters. (It also had the reverse-difficulty-curve problem, where the beginning of the game was very hard and the enemies felt very tanky because of how damage was calculated, and then once you had some reasonable gear and stats the game got much easier.)

I would definitely watch someone else play an hour or two of DD2 when it comes out before you decide to buy it, especially if the action combat was what you didn’t like about Dark Souls.

Zahille7,

The first Dragon’s Dogma is $5 on steam right now

BG1&2 were incredibly different games. Personally, I’m not enjoying BG3.

Duenan,
@Duenan@aussie.zone avatar

I wouldn’t buy buy DD2 if you want more BG3.

You’re better off playing BG1 or 2 if you want more though they might be quite dated for you.

DD is more open world action rpg, I’m not sure about the story of this one but it’s nowhere near BG3 apart from being fantasy.

starman2112,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Depending on what you liked about BG3, I might recommend Solasta: Crown of the Magister. It’s much more linear (if my DM ran it I would accuse them of railroading), but it’s also based on 5e’s SRD. It offers much less freedom in how you play, but makes up for it by how well characterized the player characters are, especially considering they’re all entirely customizable and fully voiced. It’s easy to forget that the party isn’t made up of premade characters when they’re all sitting around a campfire having a conversation with each other.

It has a much lower production value than BG3, but I feel it’s more authentic to the D&D experience. The only thing BG3 has on it is better throwing mechanics imo

CaptPretentious,

Oh, thanks for the suggestion! Never heard of that game before, I’ll have to check it out. How would you rate the story?

starman2112, (edited )
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

I must admit it’s much shorter and simpler than BG3’s story. Objectively, I would give it a 6.5/10 for being overly simplistic and linear, but still a fully functional story without plot holes or many contrivances. It’s very easy to see where the story is going, there are very few surprises, your choices don’t much matter, and you literally meet in a tavern. Subjectively, I give it a 9/10, because although the story is simplistic and linear, it’s also easy to follow and fun to play, and it’s very reminiscent of every actual campaign I’ve ever played.

I especially like the second main campaign—it takes place shortly after your party resolves the story in the first campaign, when there are still problems going on in the north. I really like that people recognize the players as the heroic adventurers that they are, while still acknowledging that the new threat is more dangerous than the old one.

Edit: I will recommend playing with a friend if you have any that are interested. It’s always more fun to experience games with other people, and games that involve inventory management and role playing are especially easier when you can split the workload

Does the PC version haves the Enigma DRM?

Rai,

Denuvo. Still shit, but less bad shit.

Zahille7, do games w Dragon's Dogma 2: Review Thread

I’d just like to use this opportunity to let people know that the first Dragon’s Dogma is currently on sale on steam for $5.

Krudler,

It’s also a half finished, borderline empty, mechanically broken, quest broken, AI broken game.

I know people love the combat, and that won me over as well - it’s about as good as you can get. The rest is basically dog shit in my opinion.

Surprisingly bad/mediocre reviews. Not sure why team ninja went for open world this time.

caut_R,

I wanna say they‘re not chasing whatever FROM‘s been successful doing recently, but… yeah

I absolutely love Nioh and Nioh 2, avoided their parry game because of mediocre to bad reviews like these, and this now is a PS exclusive so I guess I don‘t even have to make up my mind…

echo64,

Fwiw, their “parry game” is quite fun. Coming from someone who loves nioh. “Bad reviews” are generally just “this isn’t going to change your life” but we can’t describe things in ways other than absolutely good or absolutely bad now.

Pooptimist,

What is that parry game?
