Curious about y’alls opinions on this. I like the idea of getting new people to experience an older game by aligning it to modern graphics and accessibility standards. But capitalizing on nostalgia with quick updates to that make it look modern rather than making new games seems like just more of studios trying to squeeze...
Remakes can be awesome – the recent System Shock remake is an excellent example of doing it right. The problem, as it always is, is capitalism and greed, which lead to lazy money-grabbing remakes of games that didn’t need it. Many games that get remakes should have just gotten patches – Dark Souls is a prime example of this. The remake barely looked better than the original and changed things about the gameplay, not necessarily for the better.
For me Doom 2016 was a hugely more enjoyable experience than Eternal. 2016 is arguably one of the greatest linear single player shooters ever made. Eternal felt like a chore once you had all the tools unlocked and I lost interest shortly after. I could have lowered the difficulty so weapon selection didn’t matter, but that was clearly not the design intent.
Ultrakill does the “swap between weapons quickly for interesting combos” much better IMO – it’s not necessary but it’s a value add and it’s super fun to pull off.
I think $55 total? $35 for my initial package and I spent $20 a few years ago for a cooler starter ship because I was enjoying the game and wanted to support development. I think the $35 package is now $45 – I bought in on the original Kickstarter – but that price gets you full access to the game and all the ships/hangars/etc… you just don’t start with them, and instead have to earn in-game currency to buy (or rent) them. I wouldn’t want a super expensive starter ship anyway, it skips too much of the early game progression.
Piracy is a literally victimless crime. Definitely support indie devs if you can afford it, but no one should feel guilty for downloading and running software.
A coop PvE game for two dads and three sons?
A shooter, preferably. Any recommendations, #mastodon guys? The youngest lad is 10, so as little violence as possible. Thanks 😉
Satisfactory could be amazing if everyone’s into that sort of thing – there’s enough to the exploration and pve that players don’t have to just be building factories all the time, but if they do get into the factory part it’s an excellent foundation for getting into engineering one day!
Yeah it’s clearly shovelware, the devs made Craftopia and this is very obviously that game with Pokemon stuff shoved in in place of more traditional Minecraft gameplay. It cribs unabashedly from every popular game of the last decade, and it looks like there really isn’t anything to do other than grind, like every other generic wilderness survival crafting game. ARK seems like one of the prime inspirations, which blows my mind because I can’t imagine anyone looking at ARK and thinking “oh yeah let’s do more of that”.
I would be shocked if the game still has momentum 6 months from now.
