I ran it on an i7 4790k initially and definitely felt it. I think you’re right that whatever APU is in the PS4 would scream and run.

Yeah, it runs very nicely on ultra on a variety of hardware. It’s been optimized and has even improved since release.

I am hoping they improved the controller interface, though. I use that even though I play the PC version, and it was somewhat broken as of a couple weeks ago.

circuitfarmer, do nintendo w Nintendo reportedly showed a demo of the ‘Switch 2’ console at Gamescom which included visuals comparable to the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

To use the PS5 as an example, it’s based on Zen 2 and RDNA 2, both of which are now deprecated. It would not be surprising for Nintendo to match them at this point in the cycle.

@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Cyberpunk’s performance was awful for everyone at launch, Windows, Linux and consoles.

But it wasn’t? There were a lot of bugs, to be sure, but PC performance was not among them. Hell, I was on a 970 at the time, and it was still fine.

The console versions specifically were a shit show.

But in regards to running better on Linux, a lot of it tends to come down to shader precaching. Lots of stutters on Windows are the first time a shader loads. That was definitely the case with Elden Ring.

I’m on a 6600 XT and have had not a single crash. I wonder what the difference is. I’m using Pop! with the Liquorix kernel.

As someone playing on Linux desktop, yes. It’s fine*.

*as fine as it can be, because it needs some general optimization

Edit: and yes, I’m on AMD (it’s the obvious choice for Linux gaming; drivers are in the kernel)

circuitfarmer, do games w Trouble running Starfield? Todd Howard says 'Upgrade your PC'
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’m a PC gamer who likes playing with controllers generally (from the couch), but damn, I hate the way they adapted run and walk to the left analog stick. Feels horrible. I wish I just had autorun and could hold a button to walk. The key binding shuts off even if I try and force it with Steam controller config, because the game doesn’t technically support split inputs.

I did a CPU/mobo/RAM upgrade for it – but I was quite overdue.

It looks alright overall.

That’s the thing. It looks alright, but it’s not the next-gen beauty fest that they want people to think it is. Plenty look better and run better. I enjoy the game, but the whole argument that it’s a graphical standout doesn’t really hold water.

I read this Todd like John Conner says it in T2. “She’s not my mother, Todd.”

Cyberpunk also has a “HDD mode” in its options.

Yeah, MS wins either way, so long as people still want to play the game.

circuitfarmer, do games w Starfield gets low-spec PC mod for those gaming on potatoes
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Sad that the article focused on this particular mod. It’s aimed at textures for low-end systems, yes, but there are 2-3 others that are aimed at systems across the board and use stock textures with simple config file changes. They’re all tweaks with options that are in the game but unavailable on the menu, and they do vastly improve performance without a drop in quality.

A better headline could have been “Modders fix in days what Bethesda didn’t do with years”.

In this case, you get Starfield free with the purchase of select AMD CPUs or GPUs.

But it’s weird for Todd Howard to come out with this push now, because it’s in response to those already playing the game.

AMD is the official sponsor. That’s the one thing that wasn’t a surprise.
