catloaf,

The alternatives are sitting at a loading screen, or the game freezing to compile a shader every time it needs a new one. Would you prefer one of those?

catloaf,

That doesn’t mean it’s good.

catloaf,

Not just games, movies too. And anything that gets Tencent money ends up with subtle pro-China propaganda.

California’s new law forces digital stores to admit you’re just licensing content, not buying it (www.theverge.com) angielski

If you don’t retain some kind of actual ownership, they will not be allowed to use terms like “buy” or “purchase” on the store page button. I hope there aren’t huge holes in this that allow bad actors to get around it, but I certainly loathe the fact that there’s no real way to buy a movie or TV show digitally. Not...

catloaf,

Much like California’s other good-sounding laws, the fine print is what gets you on both ends, both in the law and in the EULA you agree to when signing up that’s going to say that all transactions are explicitly a terminable and revocable license.

catloaf,

That’s the thing, though, it’s not a loophole. It’s intentional. It makes a good headline, but it doesn’t really do much.

catloaf,

How do you figure? If the DRM depends on them, doesn’t that give them the power to destroy it?

catloaf,

Noted, I will avoid it. Thanks for the warning.

Gacha games are out of control. Gambling shouldn't be so widespread angielski

As someone who grew up playing games like World of Warcraft and other AAA titles, I’ve seen how the gaming industry has evolved over the years—and not always for the better. One of the most disturbing trends is the rise of gacha games, which are, at their core, thinly veiled gambling systems targeting younger players. And I...

catloaf,

Assuming “we” is the US, write your state and federal representatives, not Lemmy. People might agree with you, but you’re preaching to the choir.

Are we ever going to see a remake of any Bethesda game? angielski

Fallout 3, New Vegas, Elder scrolls Oblivion are my three favorite games of all time If I had to put my finger on them. But it’s not enjoyable anymore to simply download them and try to play through them again. There’s just something about trying to replay them and it just doesn’t work. Maybe I spent too much time playing...

catloaf,

tesrskywind.com

skyblivion.com

Project Arroyo seems dead, though, so no Fallout that I know of.

But why no official ones? They don’t think it would be profitable. Microsoft and Bethesda are businesses first.

catloaf,

I’d like to see that data. I’d be surprised if it exists, companies rarely release that level of detail on their finances.

And “evil” is a very strong word. We’re talking about video games, a luxury recreational product.

catloaf,

Voice acting has been good enough in the past few decades that it’s usually usable without re-recording. Maybe remastering at most.

There’s also plenty of tooling to upscale textures too, even without AI. The biggest hurdle (for assets, at least) is 3D models. You can slap a subdivision modifier on them to make them higher-poly, but you’d still have to make sure the UVs didn’t get messed up (or whatever it is that they’re using these days). And also verify that nothing weird happened like new geometry hiding or showing something in-game. (Collision probably doesn’t need to change if you’re just increasing polycount.)

catloaf,

I wish they would have. They’ve treated d&d terribly.

catloaf,

Yeah. These are going to be abandoned after two years.

catloaf,

Really? Mine is laggy for some reason, and feels mushy. I can see there’s a firmware update for it when I connect it to a switch, but it won’t update. I hardly ever use it.

RuneScape is increasing their membership price by 50%, and Reddit is trying to censor it angielski

Runescape is jacking up their subscription prices next month, going from like 12 bucks to 14 bucks a month. The increases range from 20% to 56% in price depending on currency. Players are PISSED about it especially since the company got bought out by some investment firm earlier this year, and they see it as a shameless cash...

catloaf,

Reddit mods being reddit mods is not reddit censoring you.

It genuinely upsets me that Valve spent their time and resources on another Dota variation angielski

Like for many other people, Valve single player experiences were one of my favorite of all time growing up. I considered both Half-Life and Portal to be masterpieces. It’s true they’ve always been distracted with multiplayer games as well, things like Counter-Strike or Team Fortress and I did play them for sure, because I...

catloaf,

I’m pretty sure you can still join servers like that. I haven’t played in years, but last time I did, the server browser was still there. A lot less lively because it was hidden compared to the matchmaking button, but it was still there.

catloaf,

Skyrim has no multiplayer component, but plenty of people have paid cash money for cosmetic items.

catloaf,

It can happen if there’s an infection. Or a blood clot could end up in the other leg.

catloaf,

I think Halo was what popularized the twin stick controls.

catloaf,

Tank controls.

Metroid Prime used them too, and it worked fine. The game was designed around it, so enemies were either already on your level, or were slow enough to react that you could stop and aim.

The remake has other control schemes, but I don’t use them because I like the one the game was made for.

catloaf,

This. It’s old now, but the medic class doesn’t require shooting. The spy doesn’t either, usually. But the medic is a great way to pay a support role. It used to be one of my favorite things for chill gaming.

catloaf,

One of the new Wolfenstein games too.

I don’t think you can count hot coffee, though. That was cut before release.

What was the first video game with a sex scene? Custer’s Revenge?

catloaf,

I mean, most of the team should be watching because they’re trying to do their jobs, not because they’re ogling the actors. And this is even more removed from sex than movies’ simulated sex, because I assume they’re in full mocap suits and everything.

Hell, you don’t even need both people doing motion at the same time, as long as you have the poses roughly correct. You can edit the motion curves to make the rhythm match.

catloaf,

Does it even really make a difference, given the low-res resources?

catloaf,

Ah, they really captured the full Bethesda experience!

catloaf,

I’d like to give it a try. Anyone got an invite?

catloaf,

I will give you one (1) good vibe in exchange for an invitation

catloaf,

Is there a version that makes audio with Bluetooth headphones actually work? I tried playing the other day and it was completely unplayable.

catloaf,

No, it’s fairly common. You can find a number of people complaining about the same thing. No other games, including Doom 2016, have this issue.

catloaf,

Believe me, I’ve done that. And a handful of other things. It didn’t help. I either got garbage quality or no sound at all.

catloaf,

Is there a mod to fix the audio when using Bluetooth headphones to make it playable?

catloaf,

That used to work for me, the first time I tried playing, but I gave up partway through the game when I beat the marauder the first time (taking multiple tries of course because it was my first run) and the game crashed without saving that progress.

I tried playing again last week, and messing with Bluetooth settings didn’t help. I either got the same garbage quality or no sound at all.

I don’t know what they did in this game that’s so screwed up. No other game has this problem.

catloaf,

Pull everything you can and put it on archive.org.

catloaf,

Quick link to the archive: archive.org/details/romhacking.net-20240801

catloaf,

From what I see in the archive link I posted, it only contains patches, not playable games, neither original nor patched. You need a copy of the game already to make any use of it.

catloaf,

Copying Wikipedia? Where did you get that from? They have loads of content, including stuff like text dumps, that you’d never see on Wikipedia.

catloaf,

Yes, the software that runs the site is Mediawiki, same one that runs Wikipedia and others. Sites can add their own registration requirements.

catloaf,

You can file a suit against anyone for any reason. Garbage ones get thrown out pretty quick.

catloaf,

Fallout 4

catloaf,

Didn’t Todd Howard just say that Fallout will always be in the US? Did the US annex England in the Fallout universe?

catloaf,

Oh. Usually that would be part of the headline.

catloaf,

Software-wise, sure. It’s easy to dump the BIOS and game. The hard part is emulating the hardware. Consoles often have quirky architectures and special chips that don’t map to PCs very well. And the chips themselves often have quirks that either aren’t documented, or work in a way that disagrees with documentation. But the game developers often relied on those particular quirks for their games. For example, if there was a bug in the GPU that caused textures to become blurry when loaded in a certain way, a developer might exploit that as a free blur filter. (If you’re interested in actual examples, try the Dolphin dev blog. I think it’s really interesting.)

catloaf,

It’s a job requirement for being a lawyer.

Bullying kids isn’t, though, so yeah this guy is an asshole.

catloaf,

I don’t believe it is a crime, but if someone knows which law prohibits it I’m happy to learn.

catloaf,

Really as soon as a lawyer is calling you is when you should stop talking and get your own lawyer.

catloaf,

It would almost certainly fall under fair use.

catloaf,

I’m guessing it’s one of those that blocks basically everything. Those configurations usually trip bot detection, and break captchas.
