This is the situation we’re in, even if you don’t like it. Yes, communities can take care of a lot. Yet for so many people the creation process and love of a product is why they create, not the money. I cannot blame the devs for wanting their game to reach as many people as possible. Nor can I blame Sony for wanting to make money, without that desire we wouldn’t have as many opportunities to play amazing titles as we do, though we can absolutely blame the way that money is made.

So perhaps you may have gone a different route. Maybe it would have worked, maybe not. Maybe many of us only recognize John Deere, and maybe people in the industry know of alternatives. Point is, I am hesitant to blame devs for nearly anything nowadays. Because this isn’t 1999, these titles aren’t for the PS1, Dreamcast, or even PS2 or original Xbox. It’s 2024 my dude and they had to make a choice: Get the resources, finagle some barely working alternative, or get help. I think many of us would have done the same.

Go shit on the big companies who are almost always the problem. Everyone else, man… they’re just making the shit they want because many of them love the process. We’re lucky we see so many projects reach the light of day, especially when for every successfully finished one I’d bet there are a 100 which are scrapped part way through.

Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world) angielski

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. Most people don’t know about, or don’t remember, the old bins filled to the brim with garbageware games. Back when shit was still the wild west and people were releasing crap left and right.

I’ve on/off played this game for way too long. If you can get past the initial slow start, and I’m talking at least two hours of gameplay, then you’ll find things begin opening up. This expanding of the gameplay applies to equipment, ships, battles, exploration, and mechanics in general. It’s a game that has become a fantastic experience and yet along the way sort of forgot about that initial experience, which could be expedited significantly without much loss.

That said, if you struggle to make challenges for yourself and often end up aimlessly wandering til you get bored without some direction, I would hesitate to grab NMS. Go watch a recent Let’s Play may be the best idea to get a handle on whether it fits your preferences.

It’s not that this monetization isn’t meant to target the average player specifically, it’s made to entice singular one-time purchases in a similar fashion to how places like Walmart work. Yes, they have the data that shows a few whales will make those transactions worth it, at the same time they are counting on catching the occasional non-whale slacking. Trick enough minnows into a net and you have the same mass as a whale.

I know this is a small difference in context, to a business it can mean millions of additional dollars. So remember: They know whales will pay. At the same time they are expecting to catch more than a few smaller fish in the process.

It’s up to us to prove them wrong where we can.

I was under the assumption this was the case for the mobile market. I didn’t realize this extended to larger titles. I mean, I guessed everyone is whale hunting, just didn’t realize to what extent. I appreciate the perspective!

Sounds like those just weren’t your type of game. Chances are I could toss a rock at work and hit someone who thinks COD is the best franchise on the planet. Not saying you’re wrong, your opinion is valid, just that to people who lean even a little more towards that kind of experience, to them these games are gold.

I have about 40 hours into the game. My friend about the same. He knows three people with 20+. I have read several forum posts and watched reviews on this game. In a handful of instances the fire is mentioned. It’s a rare occurrence started by a Pal being on fire or using fire very close to your building. You can stop this by scrapping a section not on fire and by keeping anything that requires fire away from buildings. That said, I spent a day roasting an egg next to a furnace inside my wooden hut and nothing happened.

Also, it’s early access.

And one situation create bad does not a game make. Or something. :D - Anyway, gather stone and build your shit outta stone. Looks decent too.

You are allowed to completely disagree with leadership and goverment policies and actions and still agree with reasonable restrictions and laws. Course I haven’t looked into this so it could very well go way too far.

I don’t care for ol Winnie and his Thousand Acre Ego, and hate many things China has done. In far too many ways they are backwards, explicitly destructive, and often refuse to negotiate.

However, and likely due to the overreach of government there, they certainly can and do make decisions I can at least agree with. If it wasn’t for the general conniving and “fuck you, I prefer one-way streets” way of essentially absolute control, I’d argue they were the good guys. Problem is we know better. The world isn’t that simple.

I just wish it was.

We’d be so much further along as a race if we could work together.

Moreover, the community is absolutely fantastic. Literally just a bunch of half-drunk space dwarves having a good time.
