I’ve heard linux has problems with laptops with Nvidia cards, like I have. Is this still an issue? I’m getting pretty fucked off with windows but frankly don’t have time to embark on an ongoing technical challenge.
Hmm yeah I was thinking about possibly trying to boot from a usb. Haven’t done that with linux since the 90s, I guess I assumed the linux os thingie would be too big or too slow. Maybe I’ll give that a try, thanks for the suggestion.
Yeah I’ve been out of the loop with tech for fuckin decades. Bought the laptop a while back without knowing about the Nvidia ting. TBH I mostly start the laptop up maybe once a week for spreadsheets, calibre, and as a file transfer medium. I’d planned on using it for gaming too but then I got a steam deck. But yeah, there’s some stuff I can’t easily do on steam deck and I’m really getting sick of fuckin windows. Every time I start the machine it’s trying to install some new AI shit or something. I don’t need that, just want a working computer!
But you’re right - next time I buy a laptop - if I need to - I’m thinking AMD for sure.
Edit - also because of my living situation (I don’t live in a house, all my electric comes from a solar panel) power consumption is a real issue for me. And that laptop is power hungry.
The issue is that I think there are Steam bundles that can’t be gifted, such as the Valve pack and that kind of thing. That also makes something like Civ 6 less likely, just because of the DLC bundles. I can also use Fanatical or Humble but frankly the region thing might be an issue....
After starting work, I feel so tired every day, so I just want to play some casual games. Recently, I’m playing survivor-like games like Vampire Survivors and Darkchaser. They’re simple and fun, but after a while, they get a bit boring. So, I’m looking for other casual game recommendations, preferably single-player games...
I am in a similar situation, I get home tired from work and don’t have much time to myself, I can pick up my steam deck for half an hour or so but not long enough to get very involved with something. I’ve been playing doom 2016, you don’t have to commit much time to it at once. I’m pretty shit at it though.
I went ahead and bought a bunch of indie games, picked up Darkchaser, Oxygen Not Included, and UFO50, and also grabbed Cities: Skylines. Got used to the launch prices of some AAA games, buying these discounted low-priced games really doesn’t hurt much....
I got a steam deck last spring, before that I’ve not done any gaming since I had a PS2 so I’ve got a good twenty years of games to catch up on. It’s a bit frustrating how crap I am at gaming, particularly with shooters. I’m trying some different things to try and figure out what I’m into. I recently finished bioshock, so I just bought bioshock infinite. Also alien isolation, Alan wake, resident evil, and Uncharted legacy of thieves collection. I don’t get a lot of screen time but I’ll find time to try em out and see what grabs me.
Hmm no I haven’t. Thanks, maybe I should give it a try. I guess trackpad aim is just using the pads instead of the joystick? I’ve not used gyros at all, does that require tilting the device? Yeah I seem to be enjoying FPS games but I’m frustrated by how shit I am even on easy mode! I used to be good at unreal tournament way back but seems like games have come a long way since then and I’ve lost the knack.
Man I’m the same. I have a couple hours screen time after work but often I’m tired an just wanna read a book.
I’ve only just started gaming again after a twenty year gap so I’ve got a big wishlist. I get excited about games that I want to play, buy them on sale - and then don’t have time to play them.
I started gaming when pong and space invaders were cutting edge. There’s just so much cool stuff out there these days, damn we’re lucky, I just wish I had more playtime!
Hmm I’m not sure I like the idea of tilting the device - with the steam deck you’re tilting the screen too. Doesn’t that impact your view of the screen?
But I’m definitely gonna try your trackpad suggestion. Thanks, I’ll see how it goes. Do you use it in hectic situations - like doom etc? Or is it better for sniping and stuff where you have time to aim?
I’m close to finishing Silent Hill 2 today. The game nearly gave me a heart attack though. Not because of the game itself, but because i guess at some point my storage filled up and it wasn’t writing save files correctly, so whenever James would load in he’d just spawn in a black Abyss....
I played silent hill and silent hill 2 long ago on a PS2, really enjoyed them and I’m up for giving this a go. Did you mention in another post that you’re playing it on a steam deck? I would be doing the same, how’s it going? Steam says it’s unsupported.
I kinda missed the gamer gate thing, was distracted by other shit and wasn’t gaming at the time. Am I right in thinking it was some kind of misogynist incel bullshit? Like, girls aren’t allowed to play with the boys’ toys?
But yeah, I’ve seen enough stuff on discussion boards and heard enough anecdotes to see that there’s a lot of bigotry in gaming. The hard right are successfully using it as a recruitment platform for kids. Fuckin appalling, but they are well organised and fascists don’t have to worry so much about sectarianism.
I just don’t get how people can’t see that there’s strength in diversity. Like, in gaming you want a team with different skills, abilities, experiences, and characteristics. It’s the same IRL - a diverse community is a strong community.
It doesn’t have to be against each other, but I think at least to start we wouldn’t want to play with other randoms cos we’re all pretty amateur level.
Yeah we’ve been trying to find something but like you say the platforms seem to be a problem for most things
Hmm left for dead 2 seems possible for steam deck at least. I’ll check with the others. Yeah we could do co-op, but I don’t think we wanna play against other humans. Just something we can catch up an have fun for two or three hours each week
Lol we actually played worms Armageddon against each other before. If it still has stuff like exploding sheep etc it be a good game to play with their kids
Tbh not really. I’m the only one who’s at all flexible - I can do steam deck or old laptop (3050). But electricity is an issue for me, I’m not on mains electric just solar & batteries, and the steam deck is much less power hungry. Both my brothers have kids and homes to pay for. We’re not broke but can’t really upgrade tech without having to budget. We were hoping to find something that’ll work for us all.
Great I’ll check em out, thanks mate. I’m going to send this comment to my brothers. Yeah I’m thinking we can do co-op gaming.i don’t think we really want to play against other people, we’re pretty much looking for a private playground until we get good enough to play with the clever kids!
Tonight was Zomboid night. We inducted a Friend into our Zomboid Group, and have a possible 4th on the way. We started a new world with the group, and decided to take on the prison for fun (something none of us have ever done, at least on the preset difficulty). Me and my Friend who played Cable decided to make a new character...
Sim, arcade, simcade, anything. I’m kinda disconnected from the genre and want to know what is considered the GOATs of racing games to try them out....
Tbh I don’t even know how to find out how many frames per second it gives me! It seems pretty sweet to me though. I don’t think it can manage much in the way of traffic, I’m told three other cars is about the limit. That’s not been a problem for me though, I’m mostly either playing rally car on a mountain or trying to climb rocks in a 4wd. There’s a lot to do that I’ve not experimented with yet.
I personally have a huge backlog of games I’m happily playing through on the deck. And, having been burnt a few times (Cyberpunk, No Mans Sky …), I very rarely buy new full priced games anyway (better to wait for a discount and some patches!)...
Yeah well my steam deck will survive 2025 unless I break it. It’s a proper nifty little machine, so glad I bought it. I’ve not done any gaming since i had a PS2 so there’s loads of games to catch up on. Recently finished bioshock, wow. I’ve got a long list of older games, but I’ve tried a couple of newer things. It plays doom 2016 just fine, same with deathloop and beam ng drive
For the uninitiated, crouch jumping is a mechanic where you can increase the height of ledges you are able to jump on by holding crouch after jumping, like a simulation of pulling your legs up in real life....
I love RTS but I rarely play it these days because I don’t have a lot of screen time. When I have half an hour to pick up my device I’m probably going to play an FPS. I did start a play through of the original homeworld campaigns a while back but I’ve not had time to progress far.
Shame you’re getting so downvoted. People are so determined to believe in good philanthropic billionaires that they forget the system that allows the accumulation of such ridiculous wealth doesn’t work for nice philanthropic people. It was like this with Elon musk, before he sacked his publicists (my guess) before the cave diver thing. People were saying he was going so save humanity or some shit. All he’s done is fuck up twitter. Same with this guy. I use steam and I think my steam deck is a cool little machine but that doesn’t inspire me to tongue the sweaty arsehole of an obscenely rich guy.
I’ve been playing through the first two games again for the first time in many years to get set for this. They hold up pretty well. Haven’t tried Deserts of Kharak but might play that too. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed them.

This looks very pretty. But I can’t help looking at it and thinking about the mechanical implausibility of getting that flappy thing to fly. It looks like shrapnel waiting to happen. I never usually have a problem suspending disbelief in games, I think the ‘simulator’ label makes my brain expect something grounded in reality.

I’m slowly replaying the old homeworld games in advance of homeworld 3 coming out soon. I’m still on the first one and it holds up very well. Bit disconcerting to see it’s a quarter of a century old now.
No, but TBH I haven’t really looked yet, I’m still working my way through the campaign. I’m told that the mods are still out there somewhere so I’d guess the expansion is too. I’m also told there’s also a community developed game that’s pretty complex - but again, I’ve not checked it out, my screen time is pretty limited these days.
