DdCno1,

Yager is fully owned by Tencent, so it’s not up to them really.

DdCno1,

76/77 average on Metacritic is not terrible. Do you dismiss anything that gets less than 80?

WWII first person shooters

I’m looking for recommendations for WWII single player fps games for the pc. In particular, I’m looking for older games from the 90s to early 2000s. I always hear how the market used to be over saturated with these games, but after playing through the early Call of Duties and Medals of Honor, I don’t know of any games that...

DdCno1,

Hidden and Dangerous was made free to promote the second game. It’s interesting, but it was already extremely outdated and clunky by the time the sequel came out in 2003. I can’t imagine time having been kind to it in the 21 years since. AI in particular is horrid in both games in the series, to the point of sabotaging much of the enjoyment one might have otherwise gotten out of these.

DdCno1,

The graphics I actually really liked, because of how similar they looked to Mafia, which ran on the same engine and shared a number of assets with it, including textures and animations.

I had no idea the multiplayer was still going. Are you still playing the game? Got any favorite mods or other tips for someone who might have an interest in trying this game again? For all of its faults, I’m tempted to give it another go.

DdCno1,

Alright, thanks for the info!

DdCno1,

I’m currently replaying Gothic 1. Even modified to bring it up to Gothic 2’s standards, the pain is real.

DdCno1,

If you haven’t heard of it, the canceled (but leaked) Xbox 360 remaster is the best way to play this game right now. Works perfectly in Xenia.

DdCno1,

Emulate the Switch version. It works far better than trying to the get the PS3 version to run.

If you like the idea of playing a large open world game without a minimap, I can also highly recommend the first two Gothic games, Gothic II in particular. Maps for this game can only be bought, found or stolen and they don’t show your position. Since every location is hand-crafted and unique, you won’t actually miss having a minimap. Even two decades later, these titles still wipe the floor with most open world games in terms of world design.

DdCno1,

I like that they timed the Nazi punching in the trailer to the beat of the iconic soundtrack.

Billy Mitchell has surrendered (perfectpacman.com)

Billy Mitchell didn’t win his defamation lawsuit against Twin Galaxies. Not only was Billy not in a position to get a financial settlement, Billy’s cheated Donkey Kong scores were not reinstated(as he’s claiming), and his claimed Pac-Man score from 1999 is also not on the main scoreboards. What had happened is that the...

DdCno1,

It seems interesting, but based on the Steam reviews, it’s apparently a buggy mess.

DdCno1,

You have to break into the apartment of an elderly couple very early into the game. I remember the man reacting to the break in, defending himself and his wife. His death made me feel so terrible (which is the intent of the game, of course) that I put the game down.

DdCno1,

I searched this thread for Gothic II and it was nowhere to be found. This brilliant masterpiece is even getting snubbed from lists of games getting snubbed. It really should be more known. This is a game that makes (no offense) OP’s Fable look like baby’s first RPG. Incredible world building, expert progression, meaningful choices, an entirely skill-based combat system that is basically a proto Dark Souls, so many clever touches everywhere. It’s so well designed, it’s one of few RPGs that credibly crosses into immersive sim territory - that’s how well its systems are connected.

DdCno1,

Trackmania Nations has to be the peak of the series. One aspect that amazes me is that it works equally well with every input method out there. I’ve played this with a keyboard, joystick, gamepad and even steering wheel (although admittedly one without force feedback).

DdCno1,

I think the actual reason is that they only have a limited presence on consoles, which is what the majority of the English-speaking discourse on games is focused on. The genre also fizzled out in the early 2000s, which doesn’t help.

DdCno1,

I’m assuming you are already familiar with GenPatcher?

DdCno1,

I’ve never heard of it. What makes it so great in your opinion?

DdCno1,

That does sound very interesting. I will definitely check it out. Thanks for writing this lengthy reply!

DdCno1,

I’m admittedly a bit biased, because I played Gothic II first, but I’m still curious as to why you prefer it over its sequel. In my opinion at least, the second game is a considerable step up.

DdCno1,

I wouldn’t be surprised if, in just a few years time, pre-AI-era content of all kinds, not just games, ends up becoming cherished by people, to the point that entire fandoms and subcultures develop around preserving and promoting it.

DdCno1,

I feel like this is different. Even something mass produced using machinery used to be always designed by a human in the end.

DdCno1,

Try Rodina. Very unique and interesting seamless “open solar system” game made by a single developer. Comes with a fun ship interior builder. It looks very bland and dated on screenshots, but feels awe-inspiring to play, creating a sense of scale that I have not seen anywhere else. It feels almost 3D even on a flat screen.

Rodina does not have a ton of actual content, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Also, you can propel yourself around space with a fire extinguisher, which automatically makes this the best space game in history.

There’s a free demo, if you are curious.

Freeware recommendation: The Spirit Engine and its sequel, two unique and refined side-scrolling RPGs (www.thespiritengine.com) angielski

I think these two deserve more love. The sidescrolling presentation and gameplay makes them stand out, but they also boast a competent combat system, interesting narratives, colorful and detailed visuals and soundtracks so memorable, I ended up whistling some of the tunes for years.

DdCno1,

Thanks for bringing up Moonring. I hadn’t heard of it before. Love it so far.

DdCno1,

Is it really? I thought the entire point of this game series was delivering a tightly scripted singleplayer narrative. That’s what attracts people to it. I think the overlap with people looking for some kind of multiplayer shooter is fairly small.

DdCno1,

Absolutely, but that’s not how this works anymore and today, the expectation with every multiplayer game and even multiplayer mode is that it’s live-service. The industry has replaced the “natural” skill progression of players with dangling the carrot of permanent (and in my opinion mostly pointless) unlockables in front of their faces at all times.

Players who don't like survival games as a genre: Which survival games are your personal exceptions, which ones have you enjoyed nonetheless and why? angielski

Personally, I really don’t like most of these games due to the tedium and frustration that comes with hunger/thirst mechanics. Most of the exceptions that I do actually like either make up for it through something else that elevates the experience enough - or they either don’t have these mechanics or allow for players to...

DdCno1,

Huh, I never saw the Prey reboot as a survival game. I thought it was more of an immersive sim, but then again, genre definitions can be quite fluid and a game can belong to multiple genres.

DdCno1,

I have actually played Frostpunk and it’s one of my favorite games in recent years, if a bit too easy.

DdCno1,

I have owned this game for ages, I think I bought it shortly after its release, but despite having a clear memory of playing it, it was so long ago that Steam doesn’t even tell me when I last launched it.

Perhaps I should give it another go.

DdCno1,

Which chores do you mean?

DdCno1,

I should have mentioned this game. Definitely a great title and the building, while a bit clunky, is a lot of fun.

DdCno1,

I like how they call the peaceful mode without enemies “Vegan Mode”. That’s the kind of humor I can get behind.

DdCno1,

You can play Subnautica, like I mentioned in my submission, without hunger and thirst. I highly recommend it. Normal resource gathering remains, of course.

DdCno1,

Would you recommend Green Hell for its singleplayer only?

DdCno1,

This one?

store.steampowered.com/app/1149460/ICARUS/

Doesn’t say that it’s early access, that’s why I’m asking.

DdCno1,

Happens to the best of us. Some games are in early access for ages. Vehicle simulation BeamNG.drive comes to mind. The first playable version was released to the public in 2013 and it’s still getting regular updates, just received a major one that overhauls the big truck in the game.

DdCno1,

Are you a well-known developer though? One of the reasons why Starfield attracted so much attention was the name Chris Roberts attached to it. As flawed as his legacy is, he’s a household name in the industry. Are you? What was your project about? How big was your team?

DdCno1,

Tetris Effect: I was sure it would be a nice, relaxing game I could play casually to calm down. Nope. While I enjoyed the aesthetic and the dynamic music, the way it speeds up at times and the way the difficulty scales makes it a remarkably stressful game, to the point that I still felt stressed out hours after playing it. If you’re a Tetris god, you’ll probably think differently about it, but I’m not. I ended up digging out a classic Tetris clone from over 20 years ago instead, Zetrix, which still looks nice, plays just fine on modern hardware (except for resolution support) and, crucially, isn’t even remotely as stressful. I wish it had a hold function though.

Proun: An abstract racing game from 12 years ago. It still looks fantastic, has outstanding track design and controls exceedingly well. Neat concept, near flawless execution, just as much fun as I remember it being.

Game Dev Tycoon: No matter what you click, no matter what you choose, no matter how many points your game has, you can never predict how well your game ends up scoring. It’s just an RNG clicker. You as the player might as well not even be there. Everything about it is meaningless.

Elon Musk demanded a cameo in Cyberpunk 2077 while wielding a 200 year old gun: "I was armed but not dangerous" (www.pcgamer.com)

While Elon’s then-partner Grimes was recording her part in the game as cyborg popstar Lizzy Wizzy, the erratic tech billionaire turned up with an antique firearm to “insist” on being included in the game. “The studio guys were like sweating,” Grimes is quoted as saying. Musk adds “I told them that I was armed but not...

DdCno1,

Language isn’t logical, it’s not governed by firm rules. It is, because that’s how it developed over time. In 10, 20 or 50 years, this might change entirely.

DdCno1,

You needs less RAM in total on a system with a unified memory architecture, like both Xbox consoles.

DdCno1,

Why wouldn’t it? Just load the levels into whatever engine you want to use.

DdCno1,

The remaster has much higher hardware requirements than the original game. At least based on the official specs, it needs a basic gaming PC. You may have to use something like Yamagi to get it to run on your laptop.

What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?

Have you ever played a game and wondered what if you could do something that it doesn’t really allow you to do, for example being able to move around blocks in Minecraft fluidly instead of in sectors, edit the world in Hogwarts legacy with spells, be able to fly in a world like Elden Ring or Elder Scrolls with epic sky...
