thingsiplay,

I know, but its better than messing up everything into one soup that does not fit anymore. Zelda is a long running series and many more will come. So I at least appreciate that they do respect the history and not ruin everything by putting it into one noodle soup. The new Breath of the Wild era games have barely anything to do with the old games and stand on their own.

You know, unlike Disney (Star Wars).

thingsiplay,

Do you want emulate the games or play on real hardware?

thingsiplay,

I can’t tell you which version is the best for you (and your hardware). The first thing I would lookup if the particular version for the emulator is working well (have in mind, the reports are not always up to date): Dolphin for GameCube, PCSX2 for Playstation 2 and Xemu for Xbox.

thingsiplay,

Nice write up. It depends on you hardware too (if its strong enough). Some games might be best played on Xbox, so it makes sense to try Xemu. I personally prefer Dolphin and PS2, because they are integrated into RetroArch as cores (in Linux). At least he is looking for the best graphics, and that should be the Xbox versions. But I didn’t try the Prince of Persia games yet.

thingsiplay,

This depends on the hardware you are playing on, the version of the emulator and the specific game. I don’t have any experience with Prince of Persia games, so cannot make a recommendation. I personally play on RetroArch, which means the PCSX2 core is renamed to LPSX2 and is a little bit lacking behind the standalone emulator. So I would tend to use Dolphin for Gamecube emulation instead. But if you are using standalone emulators, then it might be different story.

When researching the web, people seem to talk about the PS2 versions of the Trilogy being the best. So based on that loose info, I would probably tend to recommend that one. But check out compatibility for each game in the links I gave you.

thingsiplay,

Is Goat Simulator any good? I would say (didn’t play it yet) Squirrel with a Gun is in that ball park.

thingsiplay,

Price plays a role too, only 17,55 Euros for Squirrel here and Concord 40 Euros, plus 20 for Deluxe.

I was interested into Concord, not gonna lie. But even if I wanted to buy and play the game, accept their terms of usage and create a Sony account, its not playable on Linux. And to be honest, I’m thankful for not being able to waste my money and time.

thingsiplay,

The gameplay doesn’t look bad to me, I am interested into it. It has way bigger problems, like the unpopular character styles and looks. But what do you mean by “abusive industry practices”? I like the idea of paying upfront and getting the whole game, way better than a Free to play model to me. But I guess that approach isn’t working in today’s world.

thingsiplay,

But those points are not the reason this game flopped. Lot of games have micro transactions and are popular. Other games require additional account (and even launcher in some cases) and are still popular. While these arguments are in fact negative, they are not the reason the game failed. If Sony comes to this conclusion too, then they will not learn anything from it. So I hope they analyze it better.

In example the initial trailer reveal wasn’t good. Then the characters and the universe it is in isn’t very interesting, huge problem for a hero shooter. Sony completely ignored the critics from beta test phase. The marketing in general was terrible. Game is not playable on Linux either, which would have gave them some marketing push too. And the timing of the launch day was badly chosen too lot of people and news was focusing on Wukong and Deadlock.

There are lot of reasons that are well orchestrated together to fail the game. It’s not as simple as the list you gave (in my opinion). Games with worse industry standards get more popular.

thingsiplay,

Oh lol. What happened there? We posted at the same time?

thingsiplay,

I feel like you could repost it again. I don’t think its against the rules, as it is a different source and written article versus video report.

thingsiplay,

It’s reverse engineering: www.retroreversing.com/N64Reversing

thingsiplay,

DOOM runs on everything, even on a hallucinations of artificial intelligence. It’s getting beyond ridiculous.

thingsiplay,

The iconic original Game Boy version is missing. :-(

thingsiplay,

Looks like I was spreading misinformation once again. From their official website: www.digitaleclipse.com/games/tetrisforever there is a screenshot from the GB version: …website-files.com/…/66ccd3a3b7bac97b72db3979_tet…

thingsiplay,

But they have the NES / Famicom version of Tetris, which is owned by Nintendo too. Unless they mean the infamous Tengen / Atari version on NES (some say its better, but there were legal trouble because of Nintendo).

thingsiplay, (edited )

Being critical about games is a bad habit?

In general talking about something bad, disappointing or controversal is always a good way to generate clicks. That works for news too. We humans are wired just like that. So its not something that has become recently a bad habit, this is something happening since decades, before and outside of gaming as well.

thingsiplay, (edited )

The poor shareholders.

(Edit: I just read my own comment as “The poor shitholders”.)

thingsiplay,

It’s a bit too early to judge. Just my 2c Edit: At least the person who wrote the article seems to understand and play those games. So I give him that. From content wise, this is a good article.

thingsiplay,

Videogames is a form of games. Every game you play will help during bad times. Racing? Puzzles? Story? Competition? Social? Is it really that surprising that Videogames CAN help with mental health during bad times?

thingsiplay,

I wish this was possible back when I played Overwatch 1 and 2. But people reported me because I was not responding back.

thingsiplay,

I wish news articles would just inform without strong opinions. It’s clear this guy hates this game and doesn’t want play the update. It’s not a review…

thingsiplay,

4v4, objective based gameplay with a slight hero-shooter twist

This sounds awesome to me! Add the portal mechanic to the mix and its a unique hero shooter with objectives. I played the first game back when it was new, but stopped playing because lack of content, playing the same thing over and over again. It got boring. Hopefully they learned their lesson this time.

thingsiplay,

The biggest problem to me is, that they will shutdown the previous game. I think its different enough to keep it, but probably not many people play it. What is the current Don’t kill videogames campaign called again?

thingsiplay,

I guess they don’t want to a) split the user base of similar games, b) force people into buying new stuff from new game, c) can’t or don’t want to maintain multiple live service games at the same time. These are guesses by me, not saying its the case here or always the case, just giving a few ideas why this could happen.

Is there any legal way to purchase GTA 2 for PC?

It got de-listed from Steam, it's not on GoG either.

@gaming

thingsiplay,

To my knowledge, no. I was searching for GTA 1 and 2 as well and could not find a legal way to purchase them for PC. Maybe someone has the games as a gift, so would probably sell this way. Or old still active keys sold in certain shops. But those are grey areas. There was also a period of time when Rockstar gave those games away I believe.

Whatever you do, I would be very careful not to fall in a scam trap. Also lot of free .exe downloads are probably infested with malware. The only way to play those games for me is, to emulate them.

thingsiplay,

Closing Tango Gameworks was one of the brilliant ideas of the decade by Microsoft. I’m curious to see what will happen how and what games they will produce. At least the talent can work together and have their jobs, regardless of the output.

thingsiplay,

Yeah, that was a real stroke of genius by Microsoft.

thingsiplay,

Steam Deck: Unsupported ☹️

thingsiplay,

www.protondb.com/app/2280

Looks like it runs on the Deck. My concern was a possible problem with a new launcher or some kind of anticheat or DRM. Maybe its unsupported because some internet connection functionality does not work, but it runs in single player? Not sure, need to read the reports and comments. But at least many reports say it works.

thingsiplay,

These aren’t actually Half-Life 3 leaks. I watched the video. He says everything in the video is about leaks and speculation will be marked as such. But there is nothing that points the files being Half-Life 3 related. He speculates that its about Half-Life 3 (without marking it as speculation).

So no, this is either misleading in order to get more clicks and viewer, or in best case just wishful thinking. There is absolutely nothing that makes this a Half-Life 3 leak, this is just another speculation that Valve would work on the game. You know in the past years, how often Tyler was wrong with his own speculation…

TIL about Bomba Patch, a series of Brazilian mods for Pro Evolution Soccer for the PS2 that, for a number of years, were more popular than the official FIFA games. (en.wikipedia.org) angielski

Bomba updates the game with current rosters, Brazilian translations, a custom theme song, and even meme teams (like a team of real players that all went to prison at some point, and the whole team is in matching prison gear. They’re still updating to this day! The Patch was originally sold on discs, but has since moved to...

thingsiplay,

They were much more tactical and had better controls too, visually and audio better and just more polished. The PES series (before they renamed it from ISS) were just the better games back then. I started with International Superstar Soccer Deluxe on the SNES and wasn’t even a big sports fan. But got obsessed (well not that extreme maybe) with this game. And then the Nintendo 64 followup International Superstar Soccer 64 was phenomenal! Everyone compared it to FIFA 64 and it was clear and cut which game was better for the majority. I’ve played PES98 on original PSX too.

Today, people can’t understand how good these games were back then compared to any other football/soccer game at that time.

2 hours Oldschool Runescape Music - Retake (www.youtube.com) angielski

The original Runescape Midi files are interpreted 3 times with different, Soundfonts. The results are then mixed together in a harmonic way. A reinterpretation of the original music. I have uploaded all songs as a single video collection format on YouTube and uploaded music files in AAC format on Archive org....

More exclusive games tied to a specific service or platform. Hopefully Netflix will release their games on Steam as well.

thingsiplay,

Did you write the alt text or is it from an AI? No offense, just curious, because Firefox added alt text analyzed by (local) AI.

thingsiplay,

Very nice and descriptive! I wish more people (me included) would write (meaningful) alt text.

thingsiplay,

You guys have a high hangability:

The quality of being hangable; suitability for hanging or suspension.

thingsiplay,

The Switch really isn’t that good. It’s just the competition is so bad right now. Nintendo sells so good because they keep making good games and knows how to appeal to the mass market, not just to a specific core audience. I don’t like many things about the Switch and that includes its hardware, software and the shop. But I’m not the core audience of this system either, so fair enough I guess.

thingsiplay,

I agree mostly and did the same. At some point when the Steam Deck was new, I really thought about getting a Switch instead alongside my PC. Because the Steam Deck is more like an extension to the eco system I already have with my PC (especially as a Linux user). On the other side, the Switch would widen the the number of games to play. You can’t buy specific games on PC, such as some of the most beloved franchises and games in history.

I went with the Steam Deck, as a fan of Steam, Linux and PC in general. The Switch system is what, 7 years old? 8? Even games from its launch time are still sold very expensive. Plus Nintendo does really bad things to the fan games and such, that I won’t support this company any longer.

thingsiplay,

It’s not just “it was”, but “it is”. I am right now playing TOTK on Yuzu (yes the one that is no longer available) at 1440p 60 fps, with around 60 hours and near the end. I played this year BOTW the same, but 130 hours! And I enjoy them with my favorite controller at the moment, the Xbox Series S controller. The experience is not perfect, but I think much better than on original hardware.

Do you know any singleplayer games that are infinitely replayable? angielski

I recently booted up Half-Life 2 to replay it. I have played the absolute shit out of this game before, so 60% of it just feels like a drag to me now. It was such an amazing game but it’s sort of spoiled for me after I’ve played it too much....

thingsiplay,

Activision, Ubisoft, and EA, all multibillion game dev company, said they’ll be using generative AI to make their game

Because these companies don’t care stealing assets and work of others. AI makes it very easy and it won’t be too obvious. Problem with AI is, its trained on data they probably have no rights to use for. But its hard to provide evidence, until its too late and obvious.

thingsiplay, (edited )

Edit: ugh, I lost myself in this reply. It’s just geeking about the future what could be possible, mostly not worth reading if you value your time.

This is one of the most exciting developments to me, the actual AI of bots or NPCs. Not only for RPG games, I can also envision multiplayer games to be more fun playing offline with bots. Imagine they act like humans, with their hearings and trying to trick you out in Mario Kart, Street Fighter and Counter Strike. Obviously we are long way from this, but this is very exciting to me.

Also GTA where people act normal and do stuff humans would probably try too is exciting as well. In RPGs imagine you hear about a hero in a village who defends its town and you recruit him, finding out its just a normal NPC for other players, but got strong because it found a holy weapon you dropped near to him in the beginning of the game. Just totally wild idea I know, but what if the future of games (probably 50 years from now… sheesh) is extremely rich and dynamic? I have no idea how this vision could be accomplished without AI and always server connection to power servers…

thingsiplay,

Yes and no. The developers mostly still care making good games. Therefore some games are still good. Also we got a few good surprises in the last few years from these companies, so its not all lost.
