I use PIA because it’s cheap as dirt. I don’t use their client and I have it setup so exclusively my torrent client uses it. It works for my use case because I’m pretty much just trying to avoid nasty letters from my ISP. I wouldn’t trust them with any of my regular traffic because they’re sketchy and there’s got to be a reason they’re so cheap.

Although I would consider what your usecase for a VPN is - ie what attack vectors are you trying to protect against when using it for regular traffic? There’s arguably very little a VPN does to protect you on public WiFi and also opens you up to new risks

DonnieDarkmode,

Well my hope was that it would protect against things like packet sniffing and in case I connect to an evil twin (if I’m using that term correctly). But I’ll be the first to admit my knowledge there is incredibly limited, and I wasn’t aware that it would actually create new vulnerabilities. Would you be able to explain a bit?

Scrof, w Having a hard time settling on a VPN

I use MullvadVPN and have no issues. In fact you can even pay for it anonymously and it has a cute mole for mascot.

DreadPotato,

Doesn’t have port forwarding anymore though

Of course it isn’t, but OP mentioned it and mullvad doesn’t support it.

You don't mention how they read these books, is it a Kindle e-ink device, a Fire Tablet, or some other way? I ask because the shitification has started, they have a new file format they deliver to devices that are capable of KFX. That's anything made after the 1st Paperwhite e-ink Kindle. The new KFX file is not crackable with current NoDRM/DeDRM tools that can be found on GitHub.

As for FOSS, Koreader can be found on github and is installable on most Kobo devices as well as Remarkable devices if going with e-ink, and can be installed on android devices through F-Droid or manual install. Always read the install instructions to make sure you understand the install procedure on e-ink devices.

    DaCrazyJamez,

Currently android tablet with kindle app. Uses windows desktop to organize library (which the latest update forces you to do via cloud)

I'll send you to an older post, here.

It's a hassle, but it works mostly, unless it's textbooks or books made for the Indian market. Mobile read has info about the changes, here and here.

It basically involves installing an android emulator to windows and using old Kindle for Android apps as the workaround, but Amazon can stop that whenever they feel like it.

    exu,

KFX up to Kindle for PC 1.26 can be converted with the KFX input plugin.

CTdummy, w Having a hard time settling on a VPN

I’ll see if I bookmarked it but there was a site with a bunch of VPNs listed with their privacy/functionality compared. Using it as a reference I ended up on Mullvad VPN. Super simple set up for the basic stuff with some more functionality under the hood if you need. iOS and windows app for quick set up too. My experience with them has been only positive so far.

    theangriestbird, (edited )

Idk if this was the article you were thinking of, but I used this article from torrentfreak and also settled on Mullvad. I’ve been subscribed for years, they’re great and pretty cheap.

Edit: I reread your post and realized that you’re looking for a VPN with port forwarding. Frankly, I trust Mullvad enough at this point that if they removed port forwarding as a feature, then I assume that feature is probably just a bad idea for VPNs in general.

    wolfshadowheart,
    @wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

I need a VPN with port forwarding because I want to host game servers behind a CG/NAT. So there's at least one reason why they should still be featured.

    DogMuffins,

I think hosting something and wanting inbound traffic through a VPN is a pretty unusual use case.

    DonnieDarkmode, w 5th Edition D&D books?

This is from the community on Reddit. You should be able to grab the torrent file for whichever 5e book you want from there. I would also recommend 5e . tools like the other commenters, even as just a separate reference; as a DM I’ve found it way easier to pull things up quickly, even if I legally own the book that has whatever spell/mob I’m looking for haha.

An Elf and an Orc Had a Little Baby 1, 2, and 3

I want to read over the Parentage options for biological traits, and upbringings. I do plan on buying them, if they work out, I just don’t have 54$ to waste on books that end up useless. Hopefully that makes sense

    PoTayToes,
WeAreAllOne, w Where do you have your VPN setup?

Depending on your routers capabilities. I have my VPN on my router and chose which device gets behind it or not. Works like a charm. If you want to access your server from outside your local network, you have to see if express vpn offers port forwarding.

    phx,

Seems to be an increasingly rare thing these days from VPN providers. Mullvad recently dropped it, but it does look like ExpressVPN may still support it

    WeAreAllOne,

Unfortunately this is true and I can’t figure out why…

Proton still supports it; easier in windows than in Linux. Also windscribe does.

    melmi,
    @melmi@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Nah that ExpressVPN article is about regular port forwarding, not through the VPN. If you use that type of port forwarding you’ll be leaking your IP.

    phx,

Ugh, wait what? Why would anyone even do that with a VPN?
