I was curious so I checked on one of my clients. I have a few with a few different settings but this is my oldest still running.

fourohfour, w Anyone who downloaded the GOG Baldur's Gate 3 release from 1337x, scan with Malwarebytes asap!

It’s even worse apparently. Apparently someone looked at where the coins are going, and the coins are going to the 1337x admins, and the uploader is just getting a cut of those coins. Which explains why the admins are unlikely to really care because they’re profiting off their users.

I have severe trust issues with any kind of pirated software so I basically never download it as a result, and shit like this is why. Even private trackers and “trusted” groups aren’t enough for me to download most software.

Steeve,

Do you have any evidence of that?

For gog games you can check the digital signature on the installer to make sure it’s legit. It should be signed by GOG.

They will delete it if they get a DMCA takedown request, as required to avoid liability under US law. They don’t however proactively look for copywriten content. As long as the music owner doesn’t care or doesn’t notice it will be fine.

If you aren’t scanning every software you download, whether a pirate torrent or normal direct download, that’s kinda your own fault

Silverseren, w [HN] Will Browsers Be Required by Law to Stop You from Visiting Infringing Sites?

If the reason for this is to prevent pedophilia content, then this will do nothing. People who access that sort of thing on the dark web aren't going to be affected by this whatsoever.

JustEnoughDucks,
@JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

When pedophilia prevention is used as an excuse, 100% of the time it is a move to restrict peoples’ rights and/or freedoms. 100% of the time.

The US has the playbook down easy. Every single law that they want to pass that is solidly against the citizens best interests they say “oh… pedophilia!”

You can’t argue against it because they will say “oh, so you think pedophilia is good and shouldn’t be stopped?” When in reality, the biggest rings of pedophilia aren’t perpetrated by online websites but by rich businessmen, polititians, and churches. Their friends, corporate masters, and partners.

ThetaDev, w [HN] Will Browsers Be Required by Law to Stop You from Visiting Infringing Sites?
@ThetaDev@lemmy.fmhy.net avatar

The most stupid part of this idea is that is requires a list of banned sites to be served to every user.

Even if they would use hashing to obfuscate the banned domains, you can download a list of all registered domains and just test every one of them.

So the average internet user will lose freedom while a cheese pizza enjoyer with some computer knowledge will gain a list of every banned CP site.

acastcandream,

Please tell me this is a joke and you aren’t actually a pizzagate nutter

ThetaDev,
@ThetaDev@lemmy.fmhy.net avatar

No, I thought “Cheese Pizza” ist just an acronym for inappropriate pictures and videos of children. Tell me if I’m mistaken (English is not my first language).

Jck2905,

Nah you are good. Cheese pizza as an acronym for you know what has been around longer than pizza gate.

acastcandream,

Just because it’s older doesn’t mean it hasn’t taken on new meaning as well though.

“LFG” means “let’s fucking go” and/or “looking for group” even within gaming circles. It’s all about who you’re talking to.

BastingChemina, w [HN] Will Browsers Be Required by Law to Stop You from Visiting Infringing Sites?

ainsi mieux protéger nos enfants

This is to protect our children of course.

As usual, so anyone who is against this law can be depicted as someone who is supporting pedopornography.

IAccidentallyCame,

Yep, the other go to is calling people right wing extremists.

figaro,

I don’t like the idea of conflating falsely accusing people of being a pedophile with calling someone out for holding harmful right-wing beliefs.

The first (saying someone is supporting pedophiles) is oftentimes used as a method to support bans on anti-encryption technology. It is a bad-faith justification for harmful and 1984 type legislation.

The second, however, is an argument used by right wing extremists to justify hate speech.

To be clear - I’m not saying the government should mandate a ban on conservative media. I’m just saying that as a normal citizen, it is a justified, non-harmful act to call people with harmful right-wing beliefs ‘right wing extremists.’

uriel238,
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I don’t like the idea of conflating falsely accusing people of being a pedophile with calling someone out for holding harmful right-wing beliefs.

Here in the states, among common harmful right-wing beliefs is the assertion of calling LGBT+ folk groomers, especially when protesting trans folk existing.

The use of bad-faith child safety and child victimization rhetoric to push questionable legislation, especially targeting general privacy or the rights of marginalized groups is so prevalent that it dwarfs by order of magnitude actual child welfare interests (like healthcare access, free school lunches and bullying in schools)

So I’d be skeptical of any rhetoric that asserts a policy might protect children.

I’d also be skeptical of IAccidentallyCame’s good faith regarding right wing rhetoric. As the world’s plutocratic elite runs out of lies to justify the hierarchies that keep them in power, right-wing rhetoric, including hate speech, is on the rise as a last defense against general unrest. They would rather the world literally burn than give up their wealth and power.

Oh, and the world is literally burning.

figaro,

Yeah I intentionally didn’t go through their post history. Don’t have time for that lol. I mostly wrote that out for anyone who read his post and thought maybe there wasn’t a counter argument to what he said.

acastcandream,

His comparison is the definition of a bad faith, shoehorned argument, and exactly the kind of trash i was hoping to not see much of on beehaw.

IAccidentallyCame,

It was a good faith comment, I’m merely pointing out another tactic that the powers that be try to use to discredit people. I’m not comparing pedophilia allegations against being called a far right extremist. I’m just pointing out it’s a separate tactic.

I guess I wasn’t too clear on that, wasn’t expecting these sorts of replies.

Valmond,

Do you have an example though?

I mean I know about using being a murderer, terrorist apologist, pedophile being used in bad faith, when was someone touting “if you are against this law, you’re a rightwing extremist” in bad faith?

acastcandream,

I guarantee you being called a pedophile vs “too far right“ or even a “right wing extremist” will yield incredibly different results in a crowded room. This is an absurd comparison.

IAccidentallyCame,

Yes, I agree. My point was left v. Right or anything like that. I was just pointing out that it’s another label I’ve seen thrown out label I’ve seen thrown out there in the last few years when trying to discredit people.

I guess my point didn’t come off they way I meant it looking at all of these replies.

acastcandream,

Because you compared being called a pedophile to being called too conservative.

Hillock, w Piracy in China

Yes it's possible. Their version of Google Drive (Pan Baidu) is basically a paradise for piracy. But it's a bit of a pain in the ass for foreigners to get access. And obviously everything is in Chinese.

China doesn't care about foreign held copyright. So anything that isn't owned by a Chinese company is fair game. As long as it isn't considered banned material of course.

Xirup,
@Xirup@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Interesting, thanks for the information.

It reminds me that I had read that Russia doesn’t care about foreign copyright either, and it makes sense.

Black_Gulaman,
@Black_Gulaman@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

And by extension, North Korea?

redcalcium,

Watching foreign movies is illegal north korea. They might not care about the right holders, but they certainly care about not letting their citizen watch foreign movies.

Aatube,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

BaiduYun's a paradise to host pirated content but not to download. The free tier fucking limits you to double digit KBs per second and the Chinese government will arrest you if you create a script that simply uses aria2 to circumvent that (contrary to many of these Chinese arrest rumors this actually happened).

TokyoMonsterTrucker, w should you pirate an image or an nft

Why would you pirate something with no intrinsic value? It’d be like stealing seawater. Piracy requires booty, NFTs have none.

lemming007,

Don’t insult seawater, it definitely has more value than NFT

NaturallyAsh, w Personally confused on how to use a Raspberry Pi to pirate properly

I just bought a Pi and set this up a couple of weeks ago. I turned my Pi into a NAS using OMV 6 (Open Media Vault - free), installing docker compose and qbittorrent in OMV, also installed gluetun docker in OMV, and then added my, opened a port in AirVpn, and added the port to gluetun and set the network_mode argument in qbittorrent to my gluetun container. Now qbittorrent only connects to my vpn. OMV has extensive documentation for setting it and docker compose up, and the OMV community forum is extremely active.

VonReposti, w Pirating Microsoft Office 2019 on Linux?

This might be a stupid question but now that you’re on Linux, why not use something like LibreOffice or Collabora?

_comfortablyAverage_,
@_comfortablyAverage_@lemmy.ml avatar

Libreoffice is the most atrociously structured piece of software I ever encountered. not only is the UI absolutely dated and god awful trash, it can fuck up microsoft office formatted documents. i possess a special hate for it since it decided to crap out on me when I REALLY positively needed it.

don’t know about collabora, will look into it

luna,

If you dislike the UI, you can turn on an MS Office-like ribbon design in the settings

Blizzard, w Ad blocking on android

You wouldn’t be able to use AdGuard properly with Opera anyway because Opera don’t accept user certificates (issued by AdGuard or AdAway) so it wouldn’t filter https traffic.

Try Vivaldi, amazing browser, built-in adblocker. Hopefully will be better than Opera’s. Personally haven’t tested it as I’m using said AdGuard which Vivaldi has no problem with - one of the reason I moved from Opera to Vivaldi.

Or simply change DNS to AdGuard.
