Copyright fuels a weird form of creativity, the “Original Character do not steal” that is a blatant copy of another character. It also happens in music all the time, “Original lyrics, sound and composition, do not copy”

As for promoting free speech, yeah, no, it doesn’t. Everyone can point to a dozen videos being taken down by bogus copyright reasons, whether because it played 10 seconds of a specific music, or because the author of a piece of art disliked the video. That’s not even mentioning how you can’t (couldn’t?) use the “happy birthday” song in USA without being copyright struck.

Micromot,

In germany it explicitly includes that you can use as much stuff of some else if you add something or make a parody, just copying is obviously forbidden

TheFogan,

In the US the law does that. Even reaction videos that basically show the original are generally OK. The problem is that generally places for the general public to post things, don’t want to spend the legal costs of checking every claim. So they do a guilty until proven innocent approach where if someone has a registered business if they accuse someone it gets yanked immidiately, and then it’s up to the users to prove it’s not infringement.

AphoticDev, w Any good tools for converting a YT playlist to mp3?
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Why would you want to convert to mp3? This ain’t 2003, there’s way better formats to use than that.

kingludd,

Can you give some examples to read up on?

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Depends on whether you want lossless or lossy. For lossy, OOG Vorbis is the way to go if you want to support open source. If you don’t care about that, WMA is a proprietary format alternative. Both WMA and Vorbis have better quality than MP3, with equivalent file sizes. I use Vorbis myself, because it’s free.

If you want lossless, idk, because I don’t fuck with that.

SBS1313, (edited )

Just a small question let us say i wanted to convert all of my mp3 files into oog or wma. Will i loose some quality or it is fine (my files are around 128kbps)??? Because better quality for same size seems like a switch i would do. (I will convert with AIMP)

ByteWizard,

If they’re already MP3 then don’t bother. Can’t make it sound better after it’s already been compressed. You’d need to get source material then convert to whatever format.

There’s nothing wrong with MP3 though. Hell most people are listening to streaming like Pandora and Spotify and don’t complain.

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Vorbis has better compression than MP3, so you won’t lose any quality, and the files should be a little smaller.

TerryTPlatypus,

There might be, but as a standard mp3 is by far the most cross compatible format on any device. Plus, if you feel like it later you can just create a program to convert all the mp3 files into other formats.

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

OOG Vorbis has been around for years, what device are you imagining that can’t play it? A Zune?

Likely they are putting it on mobile phone, and both major OSes can handle those files.

TerryTPlatypus,

you’re probably right about that, i never thought of it that way!

ArcaneSlime,

My phone will play .ogg with VLC, but the little bar that tracks song progress is broken, same with .opus. .flac works but phone manufacturers have decided I don’t need storage space and I instead need their cloud, which I refuse to use, so .mp3 it is.

AphoticDev,
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

If you’re having issues with OOG, then try AAC. It was designed to be the successor to MP3, and when MP3 is phased out in the coming years, it will be in favor of AAC. I use Vorbis because it’s open source, but there are other options than that.

ArcaneSlime,

I’ll give it a shot.

MaeTheDoctor,

Because the first audio format I think of is mp3, that’s literally it.

toxictenement, w Connecting to Jellyfin on a computer thats using VPN
@toxictenement@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Since mullvad doesn’t support port forwarding anymore, you’ll want to split tunnel it outside of the vpn. However, if you’re considering switching vpn’s at all, airvpn has a dynamic dns service (and port forwarding) which you can set up to have a static url for your jellyfin.

Just be sure to enable the DLNA server and allow remote connections in the jellyfin settings either way.

Ah yes, a statement on copyright thanking someone for buying an authorised edition of Great Expectations, a book whose copyright expired in 1940 at the latest…

JoeCoT,
@JoeCoT@kbin.social avatar

Right, the copyright is specifically for random essays added to the book, so that they could release it and say it wasn't entirely public domain, so you shouldn't copy it. A weird place to say "copyright fuels creativity" when it's clearly not the reason for the copyright here.

chemicalprophet, w "Copyright fuels creativity [...] promotes free speech", heh

I don’t believe in physical property and i don’t believe in intellectual property. Fucking propertarians…🏴🏴🏴

FaceDeer, w "Copyright fuels creativity [...] promotes free speech", heh
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

Well, it's not wrong to say that about the basic concept of copyright. The original purpose of copyright was to allow authors to feel free to publish stuff more widely without fear of it being "stolen." Without copyright there'd be a lot more proprietary information being squirrelled away in private archives.

But of course, that concept has been completely hijacked over the years. The duration no longer makes sense for that original purpose.

Neato,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Yeah. Copyright should exist for like, 20 years or so? Or no more than 10 years after the holder's death so dependent family can adapt. This 90-100 years is bullshit. It doesn't benefit the creators, it benefits the rights holders. Almost always a corporation profiting off the back of their workers.

piratetarip,

Agreed. The fundamental concept doesn’t seem bad. Usually it is harder to create than copy. So for someone to invest resources into creating something, we might want a system that allows him to recoup those costs before someone else who didn’t need to front load those costs undercuts him.

But as you said the current system is broken.

salarua,
@salarua@sopuli.xyz avatar

believe it or not, that wasn’t the original purpose of copyright. copyright was invented as a form of censorship. in 1556, the Charter of the Stationers’ Company was given the exclusive right to control the operation of printing presses in England, up to and including the ability to seize offending books and burn the printing presses that made them (L. Ray Patterson, )

I’ve seen BMS software running on Windows XP since 2008! And I mean they still run.

ByteWizard, w How can I find my schools Adobe Premiere/Photoshop Elements 2020 key?

Talk to your IT dept. They might have a student version you can get for cheap.

And btw, 3 years is nothing for software like that. All the major features are already in the software. They just have to keep adding crap to it so people will buy the new version. It’s a big cause of software bloat.

MeatballFlag, w Anti-Piracy Lessons Enter the School Curriculum: Are You a Thief?

coolin,

Hello, kids! Pirates are very bad! Never use qBittorent to download copyrighted material, and certainly do NOT connect it to a VPN to avoid getting caught. Additionally, you should also NEVER download illegal material via an https connection because it is fully encrypted and you won’t get caught!
