Hi. I want one!

forgotmyaccthxbye, w Easy and safe linux piracy with jc141

jc141 member here.

Glad you like what we do. Some observations: there generally is no unpacking, we use an archiving system which enables users to play without populating their drives with the extracted files.

Also glad that you find them safe. We started including a scanning result from ClamAV (open source cross platfrom malware scanner) to each new torrent as well as instructions to scan it yourself. And a blake3 checksum for authenticity.

iturnedintoanewt,
@iturnedintoanewt@lemm.ee avatar

Wouldn’t using an additional virtual layer for storage affect performance during load/save and normal asset streaming? I guess this might work for older games, but for newer games I don’t see how performance won’t be hit.

forgotmyaccthxbye,

99% of the games tested are perfectly playable. In cases where its not we can relax the compression settings. And we use zstd which is super fast. Try for yourself and see.

FOSSFloss,

I obviously can’t verify if you are a jc141 member but I’ll believe it, I think it’s sicc that you’re adding an antivirus scan to the gamefiles and that the games don’t require extraction.

henfredemars, w Has YouTube Blocked Your Adblocker Yet??

This is such a better use of their time and dollars versus improving their service to make it more attractive to customers.

If this is the change that really sets them financially straight, then I would say they have a failing business model.

jabberati,
@jabberati@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@henfredemars @Honse Really depends on how many people are using ad blockers. Probably it pays off for them to implement ad block blocking.

If premium cost $5per month I’d pay for it, u use YouTube all the time

No way in hell it’s worth $15 a month though, their pricing is completely brwindead

IIIIII,

I agree. It’s around $22 NZD and that is just too steep. They have a slightly cheaper one but you can’t background play with it. I’m sick of being nickel and dimed at every possible opportunity and then hearing about how these companies are making record profits.

kionite231,

I won’t give a penny to the evil google.

Petter1,

Just make a (digital) trip to India and get family of 5 accounts for about 1$ a month per account. This the way I did it.

charles,

It’s $25/mo for family. I hate that I pay for it, but I use music, and I mostly watch YouTube on a streaming device, so I’ve never been able to use ad blockers. $15 for the fam felt worth it, but $25 has me rethinking. Maybe I can configure YT-DL to get the shows I care about on my Plex

TwoCubed,

Any android based streaming device can run SmartTube (formerly SmartTube next). On an Android phone you can patch the YouTube apk with revanced, which also gives you full access to yt music.

skullgiver,
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

Do you guys not get Youtube Premium Lite? It’s €7 per month to get rid of ads and doesn’t include stuff most people aren’t interested in like Youtube music.

Landrin201,
@Landrin201@lemmy.ml avatar

Nope, not available her ein the states.

splendoruranium,

This is such a better use of their time and dollars versus improving their service to make it more attractive to customers.

Making their service more attractive to customers is precicesly what they’re trying to do.

It’s just that an advertising agency’s customers are not the folk who watch, read or hear the ads, it’s the folk who pay for the ads.

tryptaminev,
@tryptaminev@feddit.de avatar

I am not sure if it will work out like this though. The amount of ads they are forcing down peoples throat is isane. Eventually it will make people consume less videos and with that less ads overall.

BlueBockser,

And thus the enshittification cycle completes

splendoruranium,

I am not sure if it will work out like this though. The amount of ads they are forcing down peoples throat is isane. Eventually it will make people consume less videos and with that less ads overall.

Sure, could be - but keep in mind that they have all the relevant usage data at hand. Any decrease in service popularity among users (or indeed any kind of user behavior) is immediately visible to them. They have the means to know exactly what annoyances the market will bear.

And considering that YouTube still holds a de-facto monopoly on video discoverability within the entire anglophone internet I feel like it’s safe to say that the market will likely bear a lot more annoyances :P

doggle,

You are not the customer. You are the product.

theshatterstone54,

Yes, but if they destroy their products (aka drive users away) their real customers (ad companies) will pull out.

machinya,

capitalism (or at least the weird version of it used in the tech world) is about short term profit. if they get good numbers from this, they can make future projections of an imaginary increase over the years and make the ad companies happy for a while. they do not care about breaking the product in the long term

theshatterstone54,

I know. This was just the intelligent person view. In reality, as you said, they only care about short term profit, and can you blame them? Things can change overnight in the tech world. Google (as a product) was undisputed until ChatGPT was released and integrated into Bing, now Alphabet is falling vehind and losing its dominance on the market.

ours,

Just ask Twitter/X or what’s left ot it.

skullgiver,
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

Why would the ad companies back out if Youtube got rid of the people who were blocking their ads anyway? If anything, it makes Youtube a safer investment.

theshatterstone54,

Less viewer numbers to show to advertisers.

skullgiver,
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

They’re already in hot water because of lying to their customers over this. They actually track ad blocker usage because lying about ads getting played when they weren’t would be fraud. In fact they’re getting sued by a whole bunch of advertisers because the “100% verified watched ads on Youtube.com” were actually playing in hidden frames on random websites.

I’m pretty sure the anti blocking, remote attestation direction Google is taking is an attempt to quickly fix this situation before it can get out of hand. They don’t know what ads plays are legitimate anymore and their customers are angry about it.

Worst case scenario, all Youtube advertisers over the last x years get their money back with some compensation, which would be devastating to Youtube as a product.

gravitas_deficiency,

So you know that the people watching YouTube aren’t really considered “customers” by google in the traditional sense, right?

b42, w Fully understand if this is impossible, but is there any way to pirate/emulate switch games?

You definitely can! I'm using Yuzu on Linux with an jurassic 1050Ti and it works perfectly. I basically play Mario Kart 8 and BotW (for now, TotK in the queue) and never touched an actual Switch in person (seriously! I'm Brazilian and these things are hell expensive here).

Blxter, w Starfield has been cracked
!deleted4407 avatar

Did starfield not have denuvo drm. I thought most Bethesda games did.

Entropy,

None of them do. It would fuck with people’s ability to make mods for them.

Blxter,
!deleted4407 avatar

True. I guess I thought that because “ghost wire Tokyo” and “redfall” do. But makes sense for a game like starfield to not

wolfshadowheart,
@wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

Bethesda is a publisher as well which explains that

Entropy,

Yeah those games are only published by Bethesda, not developed. Their in house games never have DRM, unless you count steam.

Rayspekt,

redfall

Best copyright protection for Redfall is that the game is shit and nobody wants to play it.

AtomicPurple,
@AtomicPurple@kbin.social avatar

Which sucks, because Arkane was one of my favorite developers before the quality of their output fell off over the past five years. I loved the Dishonored games, and Prey is the single best immersive sim ever made. I was looking forward to DeathLoop, but it ended up being kinda meh, and Redfall has been so universally panned that I haven't even bothered to try it.

Holzkohlen,

I read that most of the people working there were kinda just hoping it would get canceled eventually. The game industry is so normal and fine.

dustojnikhummer,

Those aren’t BGS games. Bethesda that developes =/= bethesda that publishes. The latter likes DRM

dustojnikhummer,

Not necessairly (well, goodbye to Starfield Script Extender in that case). But I think it’s more that Gamebryo can’t integrate Denuvo lol

argv_minus_one,

It would also be unplayably slow. Bethesda games aren’t known for performance even without Denuvo slowing them down.

dustojnikhummer,

Lets not pretend that there aren’t Denuvo games without performance issues…

argv_minus_one,

Unless I’m mistaken, Denuvo constantly encrypts and decrypts everything in the process’ memory, including executable code, in order to conceal it. There is no way to do that without massive performance overhead.

dustojnikhummer,

There are uncracked Denuvo games to this day that don’t have performance issues. Not everyone is incompetent in implementing it. That doesn’t mean I’m defending it (but Reddit/Lemmy will like to take any sort of non-attack as defense sooooo), I’m just saying that there are Denuvo games that don’t suffer performance issues.

argv_minus_one,

Now imagine how fast they’d be without Denuvo.

hexaflexagonbear,
@hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net avatar

Steam/windows store drm it seems.

dustojnikhummer,

Bethesda Game Studios games don’t have DRM like Denuvo. BGS and Bethesda Softworks are two different entities. ID, MachineGames and other Zenimax studios tend to have DRM, not BGS.

On the other hand, didn’t Denuvo come out after Fallout 4 launched? So what would they even protect, 76?

samus12345,
@samus12345@sh.itjust.works avatar

No, Denuvo was first used in Sept. 2014 and Fallout 4 came out Nov. 2015.

dustojnikhummer,

Why did you start with No?

leftzero,

“Didn’t Denuvo come out after Fallout 4 launched?”

No, it came out a bit more than a year earlier.”

boo_, w Whats your preferred codec?
@boo_@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I usually use what’s available, and has the best file size for the quality. h265 is usually the best in this regard, but I look forward to more av1 encoded content. My Jellyfin server runs on my old school computer, whicj I could buy cheaply from my school, but since it has a sub-1080p screen, it works best as a server with built in UPS for me. It also has quicksync, so I’ve never had to think about which codecs my clients support.

AnonTwo, w Every Streamer That Raised Prices in 2023 (So Far)

Are they calling Streaming Sites Streamers? I'm confused.

Tristano,

Yes, it seems like a really recent term to me. I first heard it when the writers strike began and never before that.

When I think streamer I think of people on Twitch or YouTube who stream themselves. No idea where calling streaming services/sites “streamers” came from but it always confuses me.

ByteWizard, w Anonfiles is shutting down

And thus the true nature of humanity reveals itself, as it always does. Usually people who experience this go from liberal to conservative. Being liberal requires holding the delusion that people are naturally good.

communist,
@communist@beehaw.org avatar

You should read stirner.

I think the notion that humans are evil means you must be a conservative is laughable honestly. I’m a communist and I certainly don’t believe humans are naturally good or selfless in any way.

DragonTypeWyvern,

All socialist thought is innately humanist, because collectivism can not work without the assumption that people will at least choose to be good when it’s the easier path, but yes, the idea that because a minority will abuse the system if you let them you must be a conservative is…

Well, not surprising from a rot-brain.

reverendsteveii,

holding the delusion that people are naturally good

Nope! Just recognizing the truth that I, within myself, can be better and that I can accept the idea of being taken advantage of by the occasional bad faith actor in exchange for being able to be part of a broader community of people who do the right thing most of the time.

Cynicism is laziness masquerading as intellectualism. It’s the “step 1: give up!” of philosophies.
