Uh huh.

I mean sure, two outlets reporting it, but I’ll believe it when I see it. With the Switch Pro/2/U/360/Series N in particular, the leaks were always so outlandish and in the end turned out false, while we can clearly assume the overall news about a Switch successor being in development to be real, any specific piece of news I’d immediately discard and put into the “made up stuff”-folder for the time being.

fckreddit,

Remember when Switch was comparable to PS4?

ElBarto,
@ElBarto@sh.itjust.works avatar

Or when they told us that you’d be able to cross platform with xbox and you play streaming xbox games to get better graphics.

Mudface,

This report would make the switch more powerful than a steamdeck. I’ll believe it when I see it

echodot, w Nintendo reportedly showed a demo of the ‘Switch 2’ console at Gamescom which included visuals comparable to the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Nintendo never makes high power consoles that’s not really their area. So I’d be surprised if this is true.

And what does PS5 equivalent graphics even mean? We just talking screen resolution or are we saying it can push the same poly count. I’d be prepared to accept it might get 1080p maybe 4k on a good day, but that’ll only be on low poly assets.

Psythik, (edited )

Both the N64 and the GameCube were built and marketed with performance in mind (especially the N64). Maybe you’re just too young to remember the ads.

Sethayy,

Today’s consoles are pretty different than the n64 or GameCube tho

km3k,

yeah, Project Reality

Phen,

Apparently the ps5 comparison is because they ran the same tech demo that the ps5 did 2 years ago. But that doesn’t really mean anything. At this point Nintendo may still be working with a wide range of specs on prototypes before finalizing a decision about what the console will be.

I’m going the nostalgia route and playing Bioshock

Rentoraa,

Love me some Bioshock. I was in the middle of a replay of Bioshock 2 when Armored Core 6 came out and got sucked into that. Will definitely go back and finish it after I beat AC6

My initial thought reading it was “spiritual sequel to Glover?” but this is definitely not that. As you said more like the Addams Family’s Thing. Kinda creepy in a way.

Love they got Keith to voice it. Looks fun. Been a long while since I played the original.

@saegiru@lemmy.world avatar

Well shit! That’s awesome. Can’t say that I’m a huge fan of the graphical upgrade actually, at least during gameplay. Looks too much like a flash game or something. However, maybe it’ll feel different during play. Definitely glad you can switch styles. Still will be getting this just to support Gargoyles stuff. Wonder if they’ll add any voice work from the original cast? Can never have too much Keith David.

I’m about halfway through FF5 (Pixel Remaster).

Once this game is done, I’ll have finished all the main line games except for 11. I’m planning on just doin the main quest line until where ever that ends in the base game (I already have a level 20 something character from the trial). I’ve been playing 14 for ten years so I’ve already counted that one.

Just has been a personal goal of mine to complete all of them, and I’m finally close. It’s just funny it’s taken this long. I finished 4 back when it came out in the 90s as 2 here. I still have my ff2 and ff3 SNES carts in the other room here.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Wow, nice!

I have only played 7, 9, 12, 13 and 15. I reached around level 20-25 in FF 14, but that isn’t even halfway into base game, so not counting that. I dropped it because of the huge time sink it is.

As for older ones, while I don’t mind retro games, they feel a bit too retro. How would you say those older games are, if you don’t have any nostalgia for it?

garretble, (edited )
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

6 is my favorite of the entire series so I might be too partial to it, but I do really feel like 6 is the their first big step into a somewhat modern/more mature storytelling. 4 also has a good story, but it’s still kinda tied into this idea of the main characters dealing with crystals and whatnot, and that never really resonated with me that much.

6, on the other hand, has a narrative beyond that. You don’t worry about silly crystals at all, and instead of some vague evil plaguing the world because the crystals got broken or out of alignment or whatever, you have real threats from a nation that’s using magitek technology, then later on even worse threats (and the best main antagonist of the series). I also think 6 has the most interesting characters, and even though there are a lot, almost all of them have interesting back stories you can explore. And many of those stories are tragic. You may have heard about suplexing the ghost train, but the story around the ghost train is heartbreaking. This is the first of the series where I cared about all these characters because they are written well.

It’s just a game that feels whole. Things that happen feel correct for the setting they have set up. 6 and Chrono Trigger are the absolute apex of 2D RPGs before the world jumped to 3D. And another big plus is that these games still look gorgeous because the sprites never get old unlike the boxy, ugly humanoid figures of 7.

As for the others, 1-5. They are alright. 4 is the most important of that group. It’s got a good story, though it’s not my favorite. I think the Pixel Remaster versions are pretty nice because you can set the xp gains to 4x, cutting out a TON of grinding in the older ones. And you can turn off random battles if you just want to get through a dungeon. I’ve played 2, 3, and now 5 this way. I think it’s neat to see how the series has evolved, but if you aren’t too worried about playing them yourself you could surely get by by watching some video synopses online. That said, with the 4x bump, I got through 2 and 3 each in about 10 hours. So not bad at all.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

4x bump sounds nice. And thanks for the info. I’ll add them to my wishlist.

I’d say 5 and 6 are worth playing even without the nostalgia factor. The job system in 5 is really fun to play with and the plot is solid, and 6 is one of the classics everyone should play once.

As for the earlier games, they are surprisingly decent despite their age but I’d say they are best played as a history lesson to the genre.

Finnished Call of Cthulhu the past week, finally finished Prey this one (I’ve abandoned it for about a year), and between all of this I’m playing Baldur’s Gate 3. Now I want to play again the System Shock remake, I’m far in the game and I think I can finish it without much time.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Nice list of games. How are you liking System Shock remake? I have played Bioshock, so wanted to try System Shock too, but never got around to it.

What class are you using in BG 3?

rgalex,
@rgalex@lemmy.world avatar

I’m liking it a lot. I’ve never finished Bioshock, but I’ve played a few hours of it, so it may not be a fair comparison, but the environment feels bigger and more convoluted, everything is less linear. It’s more similar to Prey than Bioshock.

Also, the progression of the player is based on gadgets and weapons, there are no powers to level up by using points.

And with Baldur’s Gate I’m playing a thief which a master on almost every skill, but not the best in combat jajajaja.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, that sounds fun. Will check out System Shock.

Oooh, a thief! Nice! You must have become pretty rich!

Compared to does not mean equal to… lol

ZoopZeZoop,

True, but it does suggest they are in the same league. Not saying it is, but able to be compared suggests that it may be as good in some aspects.

Patches,

I compared my wealth to Bill Gates and turns out he makes more money just existing for 1 minute than I will make in my entire life. But we are comparable.

kattenluik,

You are comparable, and what they said was not anywhere near over the top or outrageous.

Your disbelief in a product existing and making a joke out of what otherwise would be a proper conversation is honestly very sad.

legion,
@legion@lemmy.world avatar

And even if some prototype device is, that doesn’t mean the production device will be, once things like heat and power usage have to really be accounted for.

conciselyverbose,

It doesn't even matter a lot if it does have really good graphics capability. Nvidia is good at that (though whether they'd price that where Nintendo wants is questionable). The question is what Nvidia can give in a CPU, because the only ARM CPU out there that's actually interesting in terms of efficient per core performance is Apple.

eltimablo,

the only ARM CPU out there that's actually interesting in terms of efficient per core performance is Apple.

No it's not

conciselyverbose,

That is not a gaming capable chip. It is a server chip where the entire value proposition is the core count and connectivity.

Nvidia doesn't make anything and hasn't shown any capability to make anything that isn't a massive liability for gaming.

eltimablo,

There's no such thing as a "gaming chip" when it comes to CPUs. Are you trying to tell me that you can't plug a GPU into the PCIe slot of an Ampere Altra? Do you honestly believe that a game compiled for ARM magically won't run on a server chip due to some kind of hardware block that detects games and says "nope, not gonna run that?"

Also, Nvidia makes the processor in the Nintendo Switch, and I linked chips from two other manufacturers in my comment.

conciselyverbose, (edited )

There are performance traits you have to have to be even in the vicinity of functional for gaming, and they're the opposite of what you need for a server. Yes, I'm saying that if you put a gaming GPU into any of those chips, the performance would be fucking terrible. You need fast clocks and IPC with low latency, not lots of cores and high bandwidth. High "Performance per core" in terms of server parts does not mean that it can do anywhere close to the same work per core a consumer, gaming focused chip can do. The design parameters are completely different.

The processor in the Switch chip is the reason the Switch has such a limited AAA library. It's not mediocre. It's not serviceable. It's fucking terrible.

sebinspace,

Exactly. Oranges are comparable to apples, doesn’t mean they share much in common

Taringano,

Honestly the swtcih is so far off in performance that if the new switch performs like the ps4 it’s already a win.

To use the PS5 as an example, it’s based on Zen 2 and RDNA 2, both of which are now deprecated. It would not be surprising for Nintendo to match them at this point in the cycle.

AProfessional,

Yes it is surprising, it’s a high TDP desktop x86 SoC vs a low TDP mobile ARM SoC. Not close.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Did Nintendo announce that Switch 2 is ARM?

AProfessional,

I don’t know. It’s obviously arm. They partner with Nvidia, they want backward compat, and it’s a mobile device.

Natanael,

The Steam Deck uses the same architectures by the way, with different core counts and a few more differences in capabilities
