yuri, w Payday 3 fans lament its inevitable shutdown after Starbreeze confirms transition to always-online: 'This game is on death row' | PC Gamer

who the fuck even wants cross play this badly? minecraft bedrock exists seemingly solely for cross play , and anytime i play minecraft with someone they specifically want to play java. i’m convinced the largest market share of cross play users is young folks with no real control over what play they play on.

Lojcs,

What does cross play have to do with this?

sugar_in_your_tea,

That’s the excuse those companies give for it. There’s nothing stopping someone like Microsoft from making “Bedrock” and “Java” Minecraft versions play together. Just establish an API and make separate clients if needed.

Lojcs,

Bedrock and java have different behaviors in many things. Not to mention different mod scenes. Those two are very much different games imo.

But still I don’t see what that has to do with always online. Crossplay doesn’t need you to be always online

sugar_in_your_tea,

And those separate behaviors would be minimized if they supported cross play between Java and Bedrock.

As for cross play and always online, you’re absolutely right that it doesn’t require it, but it makes things a little simpler. If a game requires you to login with the server on startup, that check only has to happen once, instead of happening when you engage with the multiplayer mode. It also makes it so the game can integrate social aspects pretty easily (friend X is online, do you want to play together?).

So if a game offers multiplayer as it’s intended main gameplay, then it can make sense to require always online.

That said, I still hate it. I would prefer companies be forced to support offline play if they offer a significant single player experience. I know it’s something I consider when buying a game (I play with my Steam Deck offline quite frequently), and ideally game stores would have similar requirements as well.

Jarmer, w Gaming handhelds, like the Switch and Steam Deck, will need to have a replaceable battery by 2027 in EU | overkill.wtf

This is a very good thing. Thank you EU for forcing us dirty heathens in NA to have consumer protections.

prole,

Once again, the EU drags the rest of us into modernity kicking and screaming.

Gotta love the reddit-tier “downvote anyone who disagrees” mindset here. It’s like I never even left reddit!

Cqrd, w PS2’s Two Towers was the coolest way to miss the whole point of the Lord of the Rings

I expected this to be bashing from the title, but it took a pleasant turn. Makes me want to play the game now.

Mutelogic, w PS2’s Two Towers was the coolest way to miss the whole point of the Lord of the Rings

Good write up! It certainly made me nostalgic for the games of that era.

Aurenkin, w PS2’s Two Towers was the coolest way to miss the whole point of the Lord of the Rings

To be honest as awesome as this game was I just want a new Battle for Middle Earth game.

Onyxonblack, w Jagged Alliance 3 Reviews | OpenCritic

This game is truly amazing! It plays great with a controller, and there’s already a bunch of Workshop Mod support.

Mic_Check_One_Two, w Nintendo Switch Used to Locate 15-Year-Old Missing Girl | MP1st

TL:DR: She was kidnapped by a 29 year old guy. Kidnapper allowed her to bring her Switch. She connected it to the hotel wifi, and one of her friends saw she was online. That friend reported it to the investigators, who were able to get IP location info and track the console down. They surrounded the hotel room and captured the kidnapper on the scene. She was missing for 11 days.

FracturedEel,

Jesus, glad they found her

It is a bit unfortunate there won't be any attempts for multiplayer in that new game though (at least by the devs, they likely know the modding community will do it).

Tb0n3,

The amount of free “DLC” for the game puts it head and shoulders above the competition. Concerned Ape made a pledge and stuck to it.

yads, w Kickstarter rival Backerkit exits beta on the heels of a successful Gloomhaven campaign | Polygon

I didn’t realize backerkit was a Kickstarter rival. I always thought they were like a companion to them.

toastus, w Epic Game Store Sale: Get Elder Scrolls Online and Murder by Numbers for Free

Are those any good?

Rynelan,

If you like MMO games with good singleplayer gameplay you can’t miss with ESO. Base game covers a lot. The expansion packs will be even more.

And unlike a lot of MMO games. No monthly charges necessary but possible. If you decide to sub to ESO+ you get access to expansion stuff except the lastest one and you won’t get access to the classes that got introduced in the expansions.

But… you’ll only need to buy the lastest expansion collection set to get all of that. The upgrade pack is only for people who got the previous expansions already.

xcxcb,

For free? Yeah ESO is a good deal.

However, be aware of its massive shortcomings and once you begin to feel the bite of the horrendous cash store be prepared to ditch it and move on. At a certain point it’s just a disappointment considering how great it could be if they weren’t trying to nickel and dime you constantly (and it’s far more than a nickle or dime too).

I really enjoyed murder by numbers. It’s a visual novel which is normally not my thing but, the characters and story were fun.

AnotherLlama, w Epic Game Store Sale: Get Elder Scrolls Online and Murder by Numbers for Free
@AnotherLlama@lemmy.ml avatar

Does ESO have a ‘story’ you can play through? I’ve seen it pop up a few times over the years and all I know about it is that it can become a massive time sink haha.

the_postminimalist,

Yes, it has plenty. In the base game alone you have:

  • Main story line (with Molag Bal being the main antagonist)
  • A story line for each of the three alliances (you can even play through the other alliances’ storylines even if youre not part of them)
  • Guild storylines like Mages Guild and Fighters Guild
  • A separate storyline based in the zone of Craglorn (south eastern Hammerfell)
  • Plenty of side quests everywhere

And then with DLC/expansions, the amount and quality of storylines grows by a lot.

But I don’t even play for the stories. The raiding is very fun and challenging. I don’t play the game like a time sink. I just log in for my scheduled raids and log out, and I play at a pretty high level. It’s one of the less grindy MMOs. They’ve reduced RNG related stuff by a lot over the years.

I’m always happy to help out anyone on PC NA

arc, w Epic Game Store Sale: Get Elder Scrolls Online and Murder by Numbers for Free

I’ll give the game a go but I’ve played so many MMOs to know the warning signs of a game using grind (travel, upkeep, etc.). If that happens I’ll be gone as fast as I signed up.

And I say that as a veteran of Asherons Call, Everquest, EQ 2, Lord of the Rings Online, Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft, A Tale in the Desert, Company of Heroes, Company of Villains, Guild Wars and many more. I think I played EQ for 18 months on subscription but the amount of grind convinced me I’m not going to put up with that any more. When those other games resorted to the same BS I was gone.

oldlamps,

There’s a lot of QoL stuff, and the dialog is all fully voice acted so the emphasis is really more on exploring the world and story.

I’ve been playing it at my own pace for years, and never worry much about what level I’m at or things like that

Summzashi, w Epic Game Store Sale: Get Elder Scrolls Online and Murder by Numbers for Free

Pretty sure ESO is a free to play game

oldlamps,

You still need to buy the client and the expansions you want to play, but not required to pay monthly like some other MMOs

Summzashi,

Huh when did that happen? I thought it became entirely free to play not long after release.
