FarFarAway, w Unity bosses sold stock days before development fees announcement, raising eyebrows

First thought: If this was done on purpose, don’t these people know how many bigwigs get caught. Like, all the time. Even martha stewart got caught. Jeeze.

Why would they think they would special? One would think they would give it up at this point.

Second thoughts: if CEOs, etc, keep this up, it makes me wonder how many people get away with it all the time, for them to take a chance like that.

Third thought: they really think the consequences for insider trading are less problematic to them than facing jail, and paying a fine up to, what, 3 times the amount they made? That makes no sense. Back to the second thought, I guess.

Ajen,

They keep doing it because they know they’ll probably get away with it, and if they get caught they’ll get a slap on the wrist. Martha Stewart went to jail for perjury, not insider trading. If she hadn’t lied she probably would have just paid a fine instead of going to jail.

Crashumbc,

Reality, is this happens SO OFTEN it is like “speeding” is to normal people… all the CEOs do it. After awhile, they do it worse, eventually you have few doing 100+ mph or someone gets killed. Then the government steps in…

halcyoncmdr, w Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition is reportedly coming to PC
@halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world avatar

Of course it would be. Just like the first game. It’s free money with minimal effort. It was always going to go to PC.

Molecular0079,

Porting to PC isn’t minimal effort. It takes a lot of dev time to optimize and make it run well on the wide variety of PC hardware, not to mention the additional PC specific technologies like DLSS that often get implemented. First game had quite a few performance issues at launch that were ironed out over the span of several months.

kadu,
@kadu@lemmy.world avatar

The point isn’t that it’s quite literally free. It’s a figure of speech.

Between taking a game you’ve already completed and is already popular and reworking it to sell to a brand new audience… versus creating a new AAA title, which one is more expensive?

hikaru755, (edited )
@hikaru755@feddit.de avatar

that were ironed out over the span of several months

It still runs like garbage on my 13700K and 3060Ti, depending on the area. Sometimes, High settings are fine, but way too often I have to drop down to “Original” to get somewhat acceptable FPS (>40) at 1440p with Balanced DLSS. Am I doing something wrong, or was it just even worse at launch?

NuPNuA, w Starfield hasn’t hurt No Man’s Sky’s popularity – it may have even helped it

Why do we need to keep pitting these games against each other, aside from being set in space they’re not even remotely similar gameplay wise. One is a survival game framework, the other is a RPG/Lifesim. There’s plenty of room for both in the market.

kadu,
@kadu@lemmy.world avatar

Super Mario World is waaaay better than your Genesis’ Sonic, loser! My console supports the gnarly SuperFX chip! What about yours?

NuPNuA,

Nah, SNES doesn’t have “BLAST PROCESSING”, Mega Drive ftw.

DLSantini, w Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition is reportedly coming to PC

Finally. The first one, I waited and waited for it to get PC port before I played it. When Forbidden West came out, I traded a smart watch for a ps4 pro, got FW from Gamefly, finished the game, and then immediately resold the ps4. Been waiting for it to come to PC so I can finally buy it on Steam.

Enkers, w Why Unity's New Install Fees Are Spurring Massive Backlash Among Game Developers - IGN

Riccitiello also came under fire in 2022 for referring to developers who don’t focus on microtransactions as the “biggest f*cking idiots” before apologizing.

Classic CEO brainrot. There’s more to life than just maximizing profit.

otter,

Maybe this will be the kick in the rear that gets people to drop them enmasse. I’d definitely explore the other options for any new projects I was starting.

Even if they drop this fee, is it really worth the headache in the future when they try something again?

doctorcrimson,

No, Unity has always been an inferior engine to others such as Unreal Engine, Lumberyard, Blender, etc. In fact, the Unreal Engine 3 UDK became free well over a decade ago, and it’s basically Unity if Unity weren’t the scummy corporate vampires they’ve always been.

quams69,

Let’s not pretend Epic aren’t also scummy corporate vampires

dylanTheDeveloper,
@dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sorry but Blender game engine was pretty cumbersome to use. It was officially dropped awhile ago and last I heard it was picked up by the community

LillyPip,

123, w Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Remastered Multiplayer Maps Detailed

So, the community was begging them to remake some of the maps for MW2 (2022) as some of these were already in the game in bigger game modes. The hold out was they were going to shove all of them into next entry instead.

GG

weirdo_from_space, w Why Unity's New Install Fees Are Spurring Massive Backlash Among Game Developers - IGN

My hope would be that this encourages open source engine usage but it’ll probably simply make Unreal Engine more popular instead.

FractalsInfinite, (edited )

To be fair, while unreal isn’t FOSS, it’s source code is at least openly viewable so devs would find it easier to make easily transferable alternatives

dylanTheDeveloper, (edited )
@dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world avatar

Also if theirs a engine bug you can crack it open and fix it yourself, handy if you’re not a AAA studio who has epic Devs on speed dial. Though I believe you do have to share any code alterations with epic if it’s hosted on a private repo

Dawn,
@Dawn@lemmy.world avatar

I can see why you would think that, but there’s alot of stuff unreal just isn’t that good at, things like 2d games are a massive struggle to work with in unreal, so it’ll gain more popularity, but mainly from devs making 3d games with a focus on high graphics

yokonzo,

Godot is a pretty good alternative for 2D games

hyperspace, w Unity will quietly waive controversial fees if developers switch to its ad monetisation service - report
@hyperspace@kbin.social avatar

People chose a proprietary engine. They get what they fucking deserve

CookieJarObserver, w I wonder why Godot and Unreal are getting so much interest today
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

Actual awnser?

Well Unity Made a announcement to make Devs pay per Download and many devs straight up said their games will be deleted the day these changes are made.

nothingcorporate,

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! Unless you have anything to do with Unity, because there are no winners in this shitshow.

marcos,

Oh, Unity will lose too.

Somehow, I keep remembering Reddit.

CookieJarObserver,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is reddit api Desaster but worse.

GCostanzaStepOnMe,
@GCostanzaStepOnMe@feddit.de avatar

Reddit famously doing red numbers since the API change.

marcos,

That’s a normal thing to happen after you decide to bankrupt your business partners. (But do we know it already? I thought Reddit wasn’t public.)

But Unity here decided to bankrupt their customers, so I do expect their numbers to change much more quickly.

CookieJarObserver,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

They will just bankrupt themselves.

marcos,

Hum, that “just” is really undeserved here. I’m sure they will drag many of their customers with them.

CookieJarObserver,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

I doubt that, devs can switch Code, Shure some game devs need to remake already written code but i think there will be someone making a code translator right now.

monk,

This is nowhere near reality.

Even if you could just “translate” code from one language to another, that ignores asset pipelines, asset store libraries, and all the build pipelines that allow you to ship cross-platform.

You also need to now train your entire dev team on a new tech stack.

Switching engines is an enormous effort

CookieJarObserver,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

If you can do it with databases you can do it with most other code. Shure it won’t be problem free but way better than bankruptcy. And users will understand that it might be buggy for some time if you explain it to them.

And yes you have to retrain your staff but its their job.

And of course there will be library issues but there will be someone making new libraries.

GCostanzaStepOnMe,
@GCostanzaStepOnMe@feddit.de avatar

Right, just make a database and then draw the rest of the fucking owl.

CookieJarObserver,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

Im not exactly that sorry for most tbh, there have been many other languages and engines that aren’t unity, they have been doing shit for years now, people could have switched already. This now is just tip of the iceberg basically.

Im only sorry about small studios and indie devs that worked on something for years and now that.

sugar_in_your_tea,

But Unity mostly targets smaller devs. The big AAA studios don’t generally use Unity, they usually use Unreal or something home grown.

It’s mostly AA and indie studios that use Unity.

Gamey,

One of the biggest appeals of modern gane engines is that you barely need any code but that also means everything is centered entirely around the game engine, I doubt there is any way to transition that, it probaly means devs have to start from scratch and reimplement the mechanics.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot,

I’m using Godot 3 for my current project because even the relatively minor changes I’d have to make to port it to Godot 4 would be unfeasible. If I had to change engines entirely I’d have to just abandon the project.

FuntyMcCraiger,

Oh really? Do you happen to have a link I’m curious.

nanoUFO,
@nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

Reddit didn’t retroactively try to steal money from developers. Also a game engine doesn’t need a community to exist, it just needs to be good, a community is helpful but not required.

Risk,

I mean, reddit retroactively stole money from redditors. Any gold/coins you paid for? Gone. Why? Because.

Da_Boom,
@Da_Boom@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

If it’s good, it will generally develop a community around it anyway.

WeLoveCastingSpellz,
@WeLoveCastingSpellz@lemmy.fmhy.net avatar

It needs devs to be usefull

lorez,

Unity will lose way, way more than Reddit.

marcos,

Almost certainly so. Unity is threatening to bankrupt their customers, while Reddit only did it to some value-adding third parties.

jmcs,

And they tried to pivot by saying it would be by device forcing devs to collect and share their users’ data.

CookieJarObserver,
@CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works avatar

Wich is a violation of EUs GDPR…

Etterra,

I’ve hated Unity since its buggy trash first showed up in flash games Sure they ironed out the bugs and it went mainstream, but I never forgot how it shouldered it’s way into the picture. Now it’s pulling this shit and I’ve got that inevitable mixture of smug and disgusted that accompanies the all-to-familiar experience of “I said this was a bad idea but did anybody listen to me? Nope.”

nanoUFO, w Prince of Persia The Lost Crown | Nintendo Direct 9.14.2023
@nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

This looks more like a very polished indie game then a new game in the prince of persia series. I don’t know how I feel about popular 3d franchises going back to their roots instead of making new 3d experiences. They did it with rayman too, but I didn’t grow up with 2d rayman/prince of persia so it’s not that interesting to me.

simple,
@simple@lemmy.world avatar

The game does look pretty good but I agree with the sentiment, nothing about this looks like Prince of Persia. It feels like they were working on a 2D metroidvania and decided to add the prince of persia name to it. I guess it does take place in a desert setting, but that’s about it.

krashmo, w Super Mario RPG | Nintendo Direct 9.14.2023

What a great game this was. I might actually buy a Switch just to play it.

Daefsdeda,

Would recommend just emulating it and saving your money for maybe a next release. This of course if you have a pc capable of it.

SurfinBird, w Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door | Nintendo Direct 9.14.2023

This game’s final boss kicked my butt and I will never get over it.
