Why does the PC gaming industry still use such deceptive pricing? angielski

Battlefield 2042 is $60 right now. One of my friends on Steam plays Battlefield 2042 and I thought hey, that would be pretty cool to play with him. I’m sure it wouldn’t be that much because that game came out a long time ago and was extremely poorly received and like, I’m sure it would be really easy to buy that game or...

This has nothing to do with the gaming industry, specifically. This is a basic (very effective) marketing strategy. But typically federal regulations prohibit them from advertising something as “on sale” perpetually so it has to be advertised at retail price for x% of the time.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You can put a new permanent low price. You just can’t market it as “on sale” or otherwise discounted.

This reads a lot like Nintendo just paid the dev to take it all down.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Sauce?

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

No one hates Nintendo players more than Nintendo

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

While I don’t support pirating products that are currently for sale

I do when Nintendo refuses to make them available on other (higher quality) hardware and also treats their paying consumers and fans like scum. I can boot up Doom on any of a dozen different computers 30 years later and play to my heart’s content but that’s not an option for Nintendo. Piracy generally is completely justified by a vast array of anti-consumer bullshit. If they can’t make games without resorting to that bullshit, fuck 'em. I hope they go under.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It says nothing of the sort.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

That’s not the developer, that’s a Discord mod, and they said in that message specifically that they haven’t heard anything from the dev. It also says nothing about what “the agreement” is. It could very well be a legal settlement.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It seems implied that it wasn’t

Yes that’s what I said. What you said is that it was “literally what happened” which led me to believe you had some sort of proof.

PS5 Homescreen Now Replaces Unique Video Game Art With Annoying Ads You Can’t Turn Off (www.ign.com) angielski

Wow, this is awful. Some people reported that these ads are also very petty and not necessarily related to the game, like apparently Elden Ring shows an ad for a licensed mousepad when you hover over the game now…...

@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

There are hardly any exclusives worth playing.

Even if there were, that’s all the more reason not to buy it. Exclusive anything is anti-consumer bullshit that should be illegal.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I guess in a sense it does lead to competitors trying their best to compete

No, it stifles competition because they can say “we don’t need to worry about competing with that game at all because you can’t buy it on this platform”.

but that’s just not realistic

It’s completely realistic. We just pass a law that bans yet another anti-competitive anti-consumer behavior.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I agree for the most part but it really does “just work” for gaming. If you use Chimera or Bazzite it works almost just like a console.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Yes…Yes it does. Ask me how I know. Actually I’ll just tell you: I use it every day.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Might be based on FreeBSD, but much in the same way as Android is based on Linux, it doesn’t provide you any of the freedoms that a typical Linux distro does.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It is true. I specifically mentioned Chimera and Bazzite. The experience is totally different with those. Also if you have an Nvidia GPU, you’re probably going to have a bad time regardless. Left that bit out. But I solved that problem by switching to AMD.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You install the same OS, you get the same experience. That’s what’s hard for me to understand.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

okey dokey.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

This is going to be one of those “Ubisoft investigates Ubisoft and found that Ubisoft did nothing wrong at Ubisoft”-situations, isn’t it?

No, this is going to be one of those “our stocks are tanking and investors want someone’s head on a pike” sort of meeting.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Honestly the quality of games is the tip of the iceberg.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Played it for a few hours but got bored very quickly when I didnt know where to go and just ended up running back and forth over the same areas over and over again.

I really hate games that give you zero direction.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It has one. But all the unexplored places were blocked off.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Space Marine II. Simply brutal.

Hogwarts. Okay. Too much walking around and moving long distances. Also crashes fairly frequently.

Helldivers 2. Got a big update that seems to make things work morw like they should. Less bullet sponge. Fewer server disconnections. Excellent game.

Also fuck Sony.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I already don’t LOL but you’re still right.

It could be seen as funding the Ukrainians in their war against Russia though. Or literally anything else paid for by taxes which is…a fucking lot of things. It’s not like that money is sequestered for the war against Ukraine in Russia.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

All PS games are DoA (to me) due to mandatory (completely pointless) PSN linking.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Not all of them. This one, yes. I suspect all future ones as well.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

This is the PC release.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Can’t justify a gaming PC when PS4 pro was pretty cheap

The console itself is cheap, sure. But the games are much more expensive, and the monthly subscription will add up over time. Although if you’re only playing single player, that may not be an issue. I’d be surprised if you can even get past the boot screen on a PS5 without being connected to the internet and logged in.

Can’t wait to finally make the jump though!

It’s never been cheaper or easier to make the transition with the Steam Deck!

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

My thoughts, exactly.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

There’s their stated goal and their actual goals.

Do you think they’re just going to come out and say that they want your data?

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

“New fix for the broken game we released out now! Only $12.99!”

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I feel like every modern game has this stuff

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

My guess: the “remaster” is sold as a new game with PSN linking requirement, and the old one is delisted.

Sony is looking for ways to artificially make number go up because they’re reeling from the losses from Concord. Too scared to take any risks now.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Maybe they just actually enjoy the game…?

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Because those same people who complain about it will go home, sit down, fire up Destiny 2 and spend $20 on a fucking cape or some shit. Because people lack self-respect.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

They’re not listening to consumers. Consumers are not complaining to the corporations, they’re complaining to the government. They’re only doing anything because the writing is clearly on the wall and passing new legislation will make shit way worse for them so they’re being proactive.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

They’re doing this because they’ve lost so much money investors are angry

There are a dozen reasons in this article why they’re losing money and none of them are because they’re removing games.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

With the state of modern gaming, I can’t fault anyone who jumps down the throat of anyone speaking positively. It’s such a fucking predatory industry at this point, full of shitfuckery, and personally I don’t want to give any positive reinforcement to any games that have invasive DRM, online-only, kernel-level access, in-game ads and microtransactions, 3rd-party accounts, 3rd-party launchers, 3rd-party EULAs, prolific data-mining, etc. All of these should be deal-breakers. Things are this way because we allow them to be.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Don’t forget the $10-18/mo subscription for the right to play it. And the $60-70/game.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

“Free” except you have to link your Steam account…

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It won’t give me anything without linking my account.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

That’s up to the collector. They’ll be a rare piece of gaming history. A remnant of the biggest gaming flop in history.

helenslunch,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Wait, I assumed this was free. They charge you $70 to play a Sony ad?
