Moonrise2473,

Maybe they don’t want to sell too many copies

Moonrise2473,

Adventure games don’t sell too much, and four episodes are a lot if you make them separate purchases. Episode 2 would be purchased only by a fraction of episode 1 users, then episode 3 from a fraction of episode 2 and so on. And the longer the time between episodes, the smaller the chance it would generate new sales because existing users lost interest.

It’s instead much more remunerative to think a fun gameplay mechanic, then create a fake ad around it, buy some assets and create an idle game that plays by itself with the possibility to pay to get it faster. Use the fake ad with the fun gameplay to promote the completely different game and users are dumb won’t complain. Don’t worry if the assets you purchased for your asset flip are unrelated, it’s also allowed to be a completely different genre, for example evony (medieval and swords theme) is using zombies, tanks and machineguns in ads

That kart game was genius programming, give you a few initial levels where it let you think that you’re driving the kart, that you’re winning because of your skills, then start the real routine of “autopilot simulator programmed to lose until you activate the paid power ups”

Edit: and I can’t believe that more than ten years passed from the release of that “game”, I remember I was playing it on my BlackBerry Z10, i can see why many itt are saying “always has been shitty” - just a year before they weren’t shitty. Gameloft released games like “9mm” and “batman the dark knight” that for just one dollar were console like experiences. And beach buggy racing, and riptide.

Moonrise2473,

Wait, the games in the cartridge need to be installed in the main memory as well? Effectively just a drm gimmick?

They can’t read the resources they need from the cart like in the past?

Moonrise2473,

if it’s a 100% online game what to do? They would be forced by law to keep servers online in perpetuity? The workaround could be to create a shell company that would bankrupt the day they want to discontinue the game and turn off the servers

Moonrise2473,

I’m surprised that on a system that was completely hacked and never patched, only a single player cheated on an online game

Moonrise2473,

Apple doing malicious compliance.

What’s the point of a third party app store if devs still need to be approved by Apple?

Hope they get fined

Moonrise2473,

At least the reverse engineered foss client is better than the original

New Manjaro Linux Gaming Handheld from OrangePi (neo.manjaro.org) angielski

This is exciting! A gaming handheld from a great open source hardware company that makes SBCs like the RP5. It looks to have all the quality features and combines the best of all the handhelds I’ve seen. This has me really excited....

Moonrise2473,

Cool, I wonder the pricing.

I feel like holoiso would be better for this, but maybe in this way it would entice more devs?

Moonrise2473,

it’s literally in their name

“Embracer, extend, and extinguish”

Moonrise2473,

They’re extinguishing a lot of acquired IPs though

Moonrise2473,

in this way they can get a sale from the early adopter + they’re going to buy it again when they re-release the refresh with oled

Moonrise2473,

Some civilized country, because if someone did that in my country everything would have been stolen and flipped on ebay before the end of the day

Anyone knows about calm Windows games with 1-finger touch screen support? angielski

What I am searching for is for games that support touch screens and can be played with 1 finger / one hand. No action games with fake joysticks on the screen, just games that work with a single finger or at least one hand while lying in bed and trying to wind down. One very good example is Civilization V, which has a dedicated...

Moonrise2473,

Her story definitely needs a keyboard, no?

Moonrise2473,

I just played “behind the frame”

It’s a short story that’s perfect to be played on a windows tablet! Even better if the tablet supports the pen

It’s free this month if you have an active Amazon prime subscription

I liked it, it’s casual and it can be finished in a single session (1 hour, puzzles are very easy)

Moonrise2473,

Surely this move will help them gaining ground from the last spot in the console wars

Moonrise2473,

It only hurts the paying customer.

They should block them only on ranked multiplayer matches

Moonrise2473,

But if someone wants to do an arcade controller, this changes almost nothing. Just solder the wires on the contact pads on an official Xbox controller. Impossible to detect via software

Even the turbo button can be done, with an intermediate IC that transforms the signal from the button to be intermittent

Moonrise2473,

You already have your crypto instance, why not limit your spam over there?

Moonrise2473,

what if someone pushes thousands of edits with random AI generated garbage from thousands of accounts?

Moonrise2473,

Posting the email of a Sony manager like that is not just “burning bridges”, this is “air raid on the bridge and the cities nearby”. Probably they just filed for bankruptcy or something like that, because when you tell customers to direct their rage to a specific manager, nobody else would ever want to do something with you

Moonrise2473,

I love how unity went from “we have a tech that can distinguish pirated copies with 100% accuracy, and also we exploit android and iOS sandboxing with 0-days to track reinstalls without fail, trust our numbers” to “we have no idea about the install numbers, you need to tell us”

They can’t be trusted.

Moonrise2473,

An Xbox branded portable with a soc taken from an Android tablet released 8 years ago would tank badly

Nintendo is successful because of their games, not because their hardware is the best

Moonrise2473,

lol just saw the timeline, imagine spending years of r&d for the best game console on the market, then microsoft beats you by 3 days

Moonrise2473,

I mean that the nvidia shield tablet, which was released 3 years earlier, had almost exactly the same cpu/gpu of the nintendo switch for $100 cheaper, but it was a flop.

the secret it’s in making a console that It’s not able to run real current gen games (even in 2017), but it’s able to run highly optimized games that look like current gen (especially 1st party games where they don’t aim for visual realism)

i think for pure raw power the wiiu had a stronger cpu than the switch, but then the software didn’t take advantage of

Moonrise2473, (edited )

Fun fact: they changed their logo two years ago, but nobody noticed, and everyone is still using the old one

blog.unity.com/…/say-hello-to-our-new-logo-and-pr…

rebrand fail, when the old logo was so unique that everyone knew it, but the new one it’s too bland and unrecognizable

Moonrise2473,

You mean the opposite?

Go to watch all the articles on the verge, Engadget, the videos posted on this subreddit, they all had the old logo. This post is also using the old logo

Moonrise2473,
Moonrise2473,

exactly, this is a non-apology. It’s just the social media manager who come back to work after the weekend and is trying to mitigate the situation.

There’s a chance that they will come out and say “ok we listened to the community, we don’t want the 20 cents per install anymore, we want 15 cents”

BTW if they really have a tech that can distinguish pirated installs with a 100% success rate are and not just lying “trust our numbers, they’re correct”, they should monetize that, developers are paying much more for Denuvo.

Game developers flee Unity after exorbitant price plan announced, but not everyone can get out (boingboing.net) angielski

Unity isn't a game engine. It's a malware-pushing advertising network which merged with a game engine to acquire a delivery channel and now wears its skin. This is fine for the bigger devs and publishers structured around platform relationships, but for everyone else? Gamemaker, Godot, Unreal, Defold… pick a flavor, they're...

Moonrise2473,

WTF? They paid 4.4 billions to acquire a literal malware developer?

Moonrise2473,

looks like they merged with the malware developer: techcrunch.com/…/unity-and-ironsources-4-4b-merge…

Moonrise2473,

Yeah “bad actors” - but they knew what they were doing and didn’t do anything to stop it.

By pure coincidence they started to make more money from freemium games ads so they pivoted to that, and anyway being blocked by Ms defender was a death sentence. It was not “OMG bad actors are abusing our installers, and 99% of our customers are bad actors, let’s discontinue it immediately and find another market”

Moonrise2473,

How can be retroactive?

I mean legally. The devs agreed to a contract, it can’t be changed with different economic terms later

If someone published an Unity game 4 years ago, has now abandoned the project, doesn’t release any update, why needs to pay a per install fee “for supporting the runtime”? The version is now ancient. I could understand if it was “from version xx.yy”

Moonrise2473,

Only the initial installation that means the uninstaller is leaving permanent traces on the system. Thank you very much

Moonrise2473,

If they wanted to just give the monopoly to Unreal Engine and be directed on a path to irrelevance, they could just placed a banner on their website “please use Epic Unreal Engine”. Much easier than enraging devs and tracking all the installs via internet (Tracking gamers without consent can be legal in Europe?)

20 cents per install is insane especially for old games bundled with other stuff when they got pennies

Moonrise2473,

Also on Android theoretically it’s not possible to distinguish new installs from reinstalls unless you’re using some kind of exploit like dummy images with tracking data saved in Pictures like taobao/AliExpress is doing

Moonrise2473,

Apps and games that force a login with a Google account get an immediate uninstall/refund/1-star rating from me

I really feel their first idea was “devs will pay for installs and reinstalls because our bottom line is most priority” then now they are in damage control and try to deny that. Unless they have an agreement with Google/apple that tell them the real numbers of downloads from the store and not just the generic range “50-100k downloads” tag

Moonrise2473,

You know what would be hilarious? If pirated copies would be counted as valid installs. If the setup just phones home “hey I got installed, bill 20 cents to the dev” without any additional DRM. It’s in Unity best (short term) interest to count pirated installs as valid

Moonrise2473,

while i think that two years of prison for this is completely ridiculous, a “let’s play” video of a visual novel, it’s essentially the same of “playing” a visual novel

Moonrise2473,

Root and myandroidtools. You then go to that specific app, list all the activities it can do, then disable any which has a name related to ads like “adsActivity”. At that point it can’t show full screen ads at all.

Some games they give you the reward immediately but nowadays the ad SDKs they can check if the ad was shown or not so it gives an error

Moonrise2473,

What the fuck is this ad? “It solves problems”

I wouldn’t install Ms office even if it was free

Why would someone pay for a stolen msdn key when could get it for free with massgrave?

Moonrise2473,

That would work only in the console (or Apple) world where you can control who and how can access the data. Otherwise someone will stick it to an USB 1.1 hub connected to the USB 2.0 port for the mouse and then complain “the game is unbearably slow!!!”

Plus I don’t think anyone would want to pay $150 for a game (no, you can’t use a $10 USB drive for this)
