Too bad the game is hot garbage with way too many microtransactions and timers.

VelociCatTurd,

I don’t know about the timers but there are no microtransactions now. Everything locked behind a paywall is now available at the start.

If we’re talking stuff on F-Droid, the big one there for me is UnCiv. It’s an excellent fully-free reimplementation of Civ V… with all the nightmarish one-more-turn-oh-God-is-it-dawn addictive problems that implies. Only real flaw is that by adapting Civ V, it also adapts Civ V’s big flaw: traffic jams. Unciv units neither stack nor combine so waging war in an obstacle-rich landscape is hellishly tedious. Also the higher difficulties feel just abusively random and unfair because the hard-level AIs get free resources, but that’s normal for a Civ game.

mindbleach, w SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher Urges Members To Approve Strike Authorization Against Video Game Companies

I’ll occasionally poo-poo efforts to unionize programmers, as the wrong level of abstraction. Software development is too broad to lump together sensibly across all industries, and too narrow for generally organizing office workers.

Game devs should’ve unionized twenty fucking years ago. Maybe forty. The horror stories about crunch were already commonplace in forums. Several major 90s releases have turned out to be corporate screw-jobs with no comeuppance. Mindscape straight-up fired the entire Lego Island staff the day before launch, probably to fuck them out of promised royalties.

Christ, third-party console publishing, as a concept, only exists because Atari treated developers like anonymous machines. Warren Robinet’s name appearing anywhere on or in Adventure - a game where he was responsible for every single byte - was a secret act of defiance. A handful of dudes responsible for half of Atari’s profits left to form Activision. Then Activision pulled the same shit and a handful of dudes left to form Accolade. Then Accolade pulled the same shit and a handful of dudes left to form Acclaim, are you seeing a fucking pattern?

It’s not enough to put people who’ve been screwed in charge, to prevent the company from screwing more workers. The incentives are miserable. And that was before the dominant strategy became bottomless money-pits that should be straight-up outlawed.

This was a long time coming.

keefshape, w Ubisoft Montreal's mandatory return-to-office order reportedly leaves staff in "turmoil"

I am truly fortunate to work for a game industry studio, also Montreal, that has not seen fit to do this. A good thing, as I was hired on fully remote from halfway across the country 😆

Even if I were local, working remote has been transformative for me to the point that it is a criteria in my job seeking. I won’t, can’t take a role without it.

If done right, with the right trust and understanding, remote work increases productivity for most butt-in-chair jobs.

Metal_Zealot, w Payday 3 developer drops Denuvo from the game before it's even out
@Metal_Zealot@lemmy.ml avatar

So, do people actually play Pay Day? All I know is that it’s a game. Haven’t seen trailers, haven’t seen anyone play it on Twitch, it’s like a “fake” game that’s a joke that’s been going on for a really long time

xchino,

I mean the last one was released in 2013, it’s not exactly super relevant but if you’re that unaware of it I assume you were playing habbo hotel or whatever little kids played 10 years ago.

RedditWanderer, (edited )

Holy shitballs. It feels like just yesterday we were firing up payday 2 on release day with a bunch of friends and risking having a seizure at any moment on the “start heist” page.

I figured yeah payday 2 was like 5 years ago, time for a new one. 10 fucking years… i need a drink!

TheaoneAndOnly27,

Oh man, I feel old now. It was so fun when it came out. I remember the first time I solo stealthwd the nightclub. I kinda got burnt out when it went more absurd. Like after John wick.

Some people, like me, are probably just waiting to see what happens. Payday 2 was awesome, but after release it got microtransactioned and piecemeal DLC'd to high fucking heaven. I don't care if the beta is good, I want to see what it'll become before I get invested.

“Beta” it’s just “Early Access” with less free playtesters

Man I was playing habbo hotel 20+ years ago

Look at steam charts. Payday 2 is always in the first page. It’s very popular.

spankinspinach, (edited ) w Lessons Learned From Cyberpunk 2077's Terrible Launch And Hands-On With Phantom Liberty

In a whimsical twist, I just popped my ps4 copy into my PS5 this last week to see how it had changed. I can tell you, it has VASTLY improved. The game on PS4 was constantly on limp mode, crashing somewhat often. Looked like junk, not much to redeem it. Managed to get through the whole game, but never really explored or adventured much past the story - was just too painful to try to do much more than that.

The PS5 version is actually so much better, and even visually reaching the point of impressive. The gameplay feels like I imagine they meant it to, including some fun gun- and knife-play. I’m also enjoying the story more now that I’m not constantly worrying about a crash. Do recommend a revisit if you’ve played and were disappointed (don’t worry, I recognize my PS5 may be what made the difference haha).
