To all people who buy switch and say it’s not about the graphics, it’s about the experience, this is what you get.
I’m not criticizing them saying this , I’m just making a point that switch as inferior hardware and you can’t expect to have the game with the same graphics as ps5. The game price is not tied to the graphics, it’s tired to the amount of work they had to put in it, which I’m sure is a lot
Wasn’t Cyberpunk 2077 released like, a decade after its original teaser trailer?
Anyways, Skyrim hasn’t aged gracefully, Fallout 4 sucked ass, Fallout 76 was less ass than Fallout 4 but still pretty ass, and from the sounds of it, Starfield was a resounding mediocrity. I’m really not in any rush to play another new Bethesda game given their recent track record lol.
Bethesda hasn’t made a great game since Skyrim. And tbh, I probably look back on Skyrim more fondly than it deserves because I was in highschool when it came out.
I’ve played 30 hours of Starfield and feel like I didn’t really have fun the whole time. It just felt like a 6/10 game. Very pretty, 10 miles wide, and an inch deep. And there’s too much of it that is actually downright bad.
It’s sad because Bethesda used to be the gold standard for RPGs, but their ambition is getting the best of them. It’s very apparent in Starfield with all the empty space, the same 5 repeated planetary buildings, only like 3 types of enemies, and a severe lack of planet flora/fauna. And the missions are mostly really boring and not challenging.
I’m not hopeful that Elder Scrolls 6 is going to be anything better than mid-tier.
Since Morrowind. Skyrim wasn’t bad, don’t get me wrong, but it can’t hold a candle to its granddaddy in terms of world-building and stat-based character advancement, which was sacrificed for the sake of action combat that is not even close to good enough to carry the game.
But here’s the thing… Bethesda hadn’t made a great game before Morrowind either. That was their big breakout hit, and ever since then they’ve just been remaking that same game with slightly different coats of paint hoping to catch lightning in a bottle for a second time. They used to make more varied and innovative games before that, but none of them was really all that good. Terminator: Future Shock had fully 3D environments and enemies and a mouselook control scheme a year before Quake, but there’s a good reason why the latter game is remembered as one of the foundational pillars of the genre and the Bethesda offering lies forgotten.
So I agree with you that expecting TES6 to be amazing is naive, but I don’t think it’s because Bethesda has gotten worse. It has simply regressed to the mean.
their ambition is getting the best of them
Always has been. I haven’t played Starfield yet, but from what I’ve read about it online, including your description, it sounds a hell of a lot like a sci-fi version of Daggerfall, which was insanely overambitious for its time. It’s a shame they seem to have focused on making the graphics prettier rather than the procedural generation more complex and interesting.
I’ve already set starfield aside lol. Glad for the people who are enjoying it but meh. Maybe it’ll be better in a year or after the modding community finishes it
Well that makes sense. The switch is a less powerful platform, an intentional trade off for the mobility. And at this point, it's on the older side. Either accept the trade off so you can play on an airplane or buy a more powerful modern device like a steam deck.
Look I’ve got no skin in the game here, what’s wrong with having a mod that removes a selector in a character creation screen?
I get that some people are upset if they get misgendered or whatever (as I would be…my chosen pronouns just happen to line up with what everyone assumes they are…comfy living) but is it really necessary to force everyone to have a pronoun selection option if they don’t want a pronoun selection option? You’re not going to make someone blinded by hate see any clearer by forcing them to do something that only affects them.
Edit: I’m sorry if my questioning hurt some folks, that wasn’t my intention. I couldn’t see what the big deal was, but thanks to those who made the effort to engage with me, I have a more informed view and I can appreciate why the mod was removed and why its existence was upsetting.
This is not the first time something like this happened, some months back someone upload a mod that removed all rainbow flags from the spiderman game. Im guessing its the exact same thing like the last time: Someone made a new account to upload a mod that was only made to spark controversy. The mod itself didn’t matter, the author is just a troll that wanted a reaction from this. They knew they would get banned so they made a new account. Nexus has the same stance on this as last time: they don’t platform trolls so they removed it. It’s not about the mod, it’s about the authors intentions, which are to harm the platform
Was going to comment the same. How is this mod hurting anyone? Isnt this the point of modding, to tweak it a little bit to suit your tastes? Its not like its a rape or child molesting mod. Those things should get deleted. But this? Such a petty thing to do.
Imagine there was a group of people in your school, in your workplace, in your city who for some reason feel that Kazakhspy should not exist. They’re not allowed to kill you, that’s against the law, but they would if they could. Instead, they say fuck Kazakhspy, go kill yourself Kazakhspy, I can’t stand you Kazakhspy. Hearing that kind of thing on a regular basis might be a little hurtful. Now imagine some game studio heard about this and thought hey, let’s include Kazakhspy in our game. And then that group in your community was like “what the fuck is this! I hate Kazakhspy and now they’re shoving Kazakhspy down my throat in a videogame? I will not stand for this.” And goes through the effort of making a mod to remove you from the game and puts it on the website. You hear about this and see that it’s up there with a few downloads. You might be a little hurt to know some people hate you so much they’ll mod a game to spite you just because they don’t like your existence. Then the website owner is like, “Wow, this is weirdly hateful and doesn’t belong on my website. Let’s not perpetuate hate against Kazakhspy.”
That’s why. In context it’s hurtful to people because the intention of creating it was to hurt people through hate.
What’s wrong with having a mod that removes the skin color selector? I get people care about race and stuff, but is it really necessary to force everyone to have a skin colour selection option if they don’t want a skin colour selection option? You’re not going to make a racist see clearer by forcing them to do something that only affects them.
You have it in your own question. It is hateful. It was made by the hateful for the hateful to perpetuate a hateful idea. You might even call it a kind of hate speech, which probably means it violate Nexus’s terms. Even if it doesn’t, it’s icky af. And Nexus is entirely in their right to refuse hosting it. The nod creator is still free to use their own mod and share it in other ways, but Nexus should not be forced to host it.
Magic, thanks for posting this. I’ve been trying to find a good and clear explanation of that been going on since I started reading about people getting upset with unity during the week.
Doesn't really matter, they don't need the switch to have bleeding edge performance, that isn't why it sells. It has to be affordable and using older processes helps achieve that.
No but it does need enough performance to be capable of running games in low quality modes. The Switch is so anemic that many big budget games are simply not even trying anymore as performant running can't be achieved without complete rewrites of engine code. So a better Switch that is at least a low spec gaming computer will enable more big games to many the effort of trying to support it.
A big issue with modern game developers is bad inefficient code. Compare Nintendo titles file size and performance to every other big game. I don’t think any AAA PC/PS6/XBOX? is going to run on the most powerful switch in 3 years time.
Seeing most of the fixes go towards that instead of immersion kinda… You’d think they highlight those immersive aspects more. The mods are sure as hell all about immersion including working stock markets and such.
Appreciated but strange. Did they look at the sub cost and went nah or something else? I mean could have just wanted it for the beta but idk seems overkill (heh heh).
I don’t understand why anybody would pay for it while it can be cracked… sure its likely only one person in the world can crack it atm but if she wants to crack it she can and then it’s gonna be uploaded and repacked by multiple people.
Yeah, it’s wonderful. I was playing it for nearly 2 hours straight on a flight recently. If you adjust the CPU clock speed and a couple other things, you can squeeze some solid play time out of the Deck with Zero Dawn. It runs amazingly smooth.
If it ran well on a PS4, it runs well on the Deck (at 800p). The Deck is really close to a portable PS4 in performance, ignoring architectural differences.
The Deck struggles with modern titles targeting the PS5. It technically can play these games… But the kind of “technically” that really doesn’t result in a good experience.
Valve’s doesn’t help with it’s ‘Verified’ status. I picked up Dead Space because it’s verified. Within an hour I’d hit the refund button. It ran. It ran at 20fps and looked like absolute ass, but it ran. Not sure that’s what they should be pushing people towards however.
Yeah I agree. They’re super inconsistent with the verification.
Sometimes a game plays perfectly, with zero crashes, at 60 FPS and great graphics… But it’s not verified because one line of dialogue uses a font Valve considered too small.
Then you have a game barely running at 20 FPS and potato graphics, crashing every 43 minutes, and yep totally verified, ready for the Deck.
I guess they’re wanting to show that it can handle the very biggest games? Problem is if people can’t trust the verification process then it’s effectively useless. After my Dead Space issue I’ve already made it standard practise to check ProtonDB before I grab a game.
Starfield held my interest for a week. It’s okay, but it’s my least favorite polygon-based Bethesda game besides F76. The aging engine just wasn’t made for a game of this scope. I tried No Man’s Sky and didn’t like it, just not my thing.
I’ve played to 150 on fo76, the funniest thing to me is that npcs were an after thought for 76 and still feel more real than starfields citizens… So odd
The Sims 4 base game is already free. So if I’m understanding this correctly, EA, of all game publishers, is announcing that, against all odds, a free-to-play game with in-game MTX is an efficient business model that they want to promote? This might not be related at all that the Sims has always been a license that caters to the general, not particularly gamer audience.
With Sims 4 already being F2P this announcement just means they are once again going to resell the same content back to you at a premium. Piecing up their game even more.
