The way I see it, there are enough quality indie games, retro emulators, and titles on the average Steam backlog (to the point that it’s a tired joke) that gamers can afford to only pay for unmissable quality. People know what they like, and they talk.
Economically, money is scarce. So is free time, for a lot of us. We don’t care what you tell us to “expect” from you, game publishers with hot takes on BG3. If you can’t release finished games at game prices, maybe you’re not the beating heart of the game industry.
That might be the way it works in your head, but the reality looks different.
AAA games make the most money on PC. And even those games despite micro transactions, DLCs and so on are easily overshadowed by mobile games.
My favorite games are indie games, but indie is simply not feasible in some genres. Take MMOs for example, every stab at it has burned to the ground or was abandoned (or a scam).
Criticizing the big publishers is the only thing we have, because obviously voting with your wallet doesn’t work. You might not buy it, but several million other people who saw a shiny cinematic trailer did. And they will continue to do so, even when Call of Duty 23 sucks they’ll go and buy 24 next year.
I wanted to stick to my I Statements a little more than I did. I cede mostly to your points but reserve that it’s bullshit to tell me not to expect quality just because someone proved it can still be done. It tells me the bigger gaming industry has gotten too large and dreary to be much use to me.
That’s a legitimate point for physical goods and services, like food or dry cleaning. Not when Sony magically created this “service” and is free to dictate the price at will, regardless of how much real value there actually is. I guarantee 90% of people who pay for online pay just so they can do that, get online. Not for the bs free game releases they do or anything else. Sony could’ve dropped the price and their operating costs wouldn’t have changed a dime because it doesn’t cost them anything to have online services. Paying twice for internet is so bullshit.

I agree that Sony is able to arbitrarily set the price to whatever they want. Online play and cloud saves are free on Steam and such, for example, so obviously Sony could just as well set the price to zero for at least the tier without free games. However, it’s not like the price increase comes out of nowhere. Sony probably makes internal calculations based on the US Dollar or the Yen and then converts to local currencies in certain intervals and since the last conversion the value of the Lira decreased massively because of Erdogan’s economic policies.
I mostly just read economics news articles, so I’ve read way too many stories on Turkey lately. It’s insane they reelected him. That man has pushed some economic policies that a middle schooler would be able to point out the holes in. The savings accounts that guaranteed the lira pegged to USD value? How in the fuck did he think that would be a solution. You’re literally agreeing to cause massive inflation by printing/handing out free money if inflation happens. So you created more inflation, to stop inflation… Some of the most horrific logic I’ve ever seen.
My friends were trying to get me to play Remnant 2 which is a soulslike. I didn’t like it all that much. Plus, with Diablo, Lies of P, Starfield, Ghostwire, and Baldurs Gate, I just can’t add another game to the list right now.
Unless you’ve already bought it I’d rake Ghostwire off the list. It’s… painfully mediocre. In every way, honestly. I was pretty excited for it, but it’s bad. It feels like an original Xbox era game with a new skin of paint over it.
I’m only playing it because my GF has finished it and likes to watch me play it. Same with Lies of P. So I’ll probably drop Ghostwire for Pinocchio when it comes out. Still, Starfield and Baldurs Gate are plenty to keep me busy. Plus maybe finally getting one of my characters to 100 in Diablo…it is such a grind after 70 though…
Not that interested in Indiana Jones as a franchise, but I'm curious to see what MachineGames can do with it. I could see some interesting traversal and combat gameplay with the whip, but I guess we'll learn more next year.
I’m not sure it was a good idea to hand this review to Michael Damiani who admitted in one of recent EZA podcasts that he didn’t play through Skyrim or Fallout 4. I think it’s quite important context and it kind of shows.
Did he? I honestly don’t know. I assume he’d mention it along Skyrim and F4.
Also, NV was done by Obsidian. Sure, it’s got some Bethesda flavor in it by virtue of using Fallout 3 base but is more similar to old Black Isle entries.
