A third Xbox? I thought Microsoft was pivoting to mostly cross platform stuff, I’m surprised they want to try and push more Xbox consoles after their sales. Like another shitty console is gonna tank so hard unless they have a real reason for this new one lol. At least the handheld sounds interesting.
If its a single player focused with no (or very minimal) live service bullshit then great.
If not then well there’s bunch of indie or classic boomer shooters I’ve not yet tried that are just that.

I come to Lemmy to get away from frustratingly annoying titles that intentionally miss out a key piece of information - in this case the title of the film or TV show the article is about - to trick people into loading the page, only to find is a film they’ve already seen or don’t care about or whatever.
I just ignore headlines like this now and move on, don’t give them what they want - clicks.
Rule 3: Mutual Learning and Collaboration
The federated internet community should serve as a platform for mutual learning and collaboration among its members. Encourage individuals to share their knowledge, insights, and experiences related to science fiction. Foster a culture of curiosity and intellectual growth, where members can engage in constructive dialogues and learn from each other. By embracing diverse perspectives and promoting collaboration, the community can become a vibrant hub for science fiction enthusiasts to expand their understanding of the genre.
I get ya, I hadn’t even really noticed since the movie was named in the box below.
Exactly. Content creators gotta eat too, so there are levels of 'please click on this so I can eat' that I'm prepared to accept in the landscape of 2024 digital information exchanges.
As great as these competitors seem to be, I can’t help but feel that SteamOS (which valve still hasn’t released) continues to be a defining feature of the Steam Deck - its… really a joy to use.
I hope they do release it. I was looking into getting the Legion Go back when it launched but all the reviews between it and the Ally made me realize how much I rely on SteamOS-specific features.
Don't have a SD and haven't really looked to hard into the experience. What are the SteamOS specific features you mention? As a gamer on Linux who is eventually looking to get a SD I'm curious.
Game suspension in sleep mode is the big one. I don't know how, but it seems like they've perfected a way to suspend any game when the system goes to sleep and then pick right back up where you left off when you wake it again without any hitches. It works just like the Switch or any other handheld, except it's a PC and it's doing it with games that aren't made to be suspended like that.
Starfield just doesn’t look or play like a game that came out in 2023. Fallout 4 was already behind the curve for it’s time, and Starfield is basically just Fallout 4 in Space 8 years later. Rpgs have evolved in both gameplay and narrative and Bethesda just isn’t keeping up. Don’t know if it’s a skill issue or it’s corporate suits playing it safe and setting unreasonable deadlines, probably a mix of both.
Starfield may be a success financially and find a fan base for now, but it’s going to be forgotten soon by most and definitely won’t be seeing rereleases a decade later.
[slightly off-topic] surprisingly forthright, why can’t we get info like this in respect to the index? i would LOVE to finally get into VR but i’m certainly not paying full price for a piece of 5 year old tech in an industry that has moved as fast as VR has
I kept hoping that Sony would do a last hurrah with discs and make a console that plays them all. But with discs being pretty much antiquated at this point, I don’t think it’s going to happen.
Sony management didn’t even see a point to backwards compatibility until recently and still can’t be bothered to figure out PS3 emulation. It’s easily the console’s greatest flaw imo.
Look, I love having a blu ray player embedded into my console. But the fact of the matter is, a lot of these consoles have decently high end blu ray players in, and they are expensive. Consider the fact that low end consoles such as Xbox Series S are probably losing money for every sale. Asking them to tack on another feature means they either increase the price of the console or lose even more money on every console sale.
You should have the option to select a digital or a disc version of a console. Maybe even be able to pay extra to upgrade the blu ray player inside your console to a higher quality or more capable one for those who want them.
